Another tidbit of news we learn from the Game Informer article is that Dr. Eggman has already taken over the world –

There's no way this is a resolution to the ending of Sonic Chronicles
But this game NEEDS to be a resolution to the ending of Sonic Chronicles.

It's like 100% certain they're just going to have an opening cinematic like in Sonic Unleashed where they have Sonic show up to fight Eggman in some random adventure only for Eggman to unexpectedly win and keep the whole story self-contained, but it's still going to be my head canon that this game serves to wrap up Sonic Chronicles' cliff hanger.

^Where ever every character who dropped off the face of the Earth at the time of Sonic Unleashed was supposed to be. Where ever Classic Eggman went after Generations. Sonic characters vanish without explanation all the time.

(If the game actually provides enough wiggle room to be a Sonic Chronicles follow up, explaining Shade's absence probably won't be difficult. Maybe she decided to go after Ix and the Nocturnus while the other's handle Eggman?)

I just realized something, but other than the Rush and Rivals games, has it really been over a decade since anyone other than Sonic was playable in story mode of a new Sonic platformer? Even then, Rush saw the playable roster shrink from 5 to 2 coming off Advance 3, and while I only played the second Rivals game, which I believe has the largest playable cast of any side-scrolling Sonic platformer and the largest playable cast of any Sonic platformer aside from Heroes, it has some of the worst character differentiation if I remember correctly(I believe the only difference between characters that was actually noticeable were the specials that required so many rings or picking up a power-up, or something).

I haven't really been paying attention to either of the upcoming Sonic games, and I won't be able to play them regardless, but here's hoping at least one of them sees Tails making his glorious return as a playable character.

Technically, multiple playable characters including Knuckles were in Sonic Generations, but only for short side missions.

I actually don't mind new characters (most of the time) because it gets me curious and excited over what they could be. I think it's fun to make predictions before the full reveal.

I always love new sonic characters so I'll like this one regardless of if it's Nack or not (I WANT IT TO BE NACK).

I would laugh if it were like... Skinny Big or something. I would laugh so much.

New gameplay for Classic Sonic.

We got to see some in the Switch version of the Trailer but here's a full playthrough of Green Hill (Act 1???).

My thoughts:

It's better than Generations.

It's better than Generations.

IT'S BETTER THAN GENERATIONS.

It doesn't look nearly as much like a clunky mess anymore; 110% approved.

It also seems kinda short, so maybe they're including actual acts this time? Or maybe Green Hill is just a really short first level.

There's also redesigns for the classic enemies like Motobug.

I've got mixed feelings about this. On the one hand, it does feel like just another dumb gimmick Sonic games love throwing in at questionable junctures. On the other hand, this could totally be Emerl from Sonic Battle in a 3D game, only with even more freedom to decide the puppet's appearance, personality, gameplay style, etc. I'm not holding my breath for Forces to actually have as much depth as Sonic Battle even if the latter turns out to be true though (I'll eat my words of the custom character betrays Sonic at the end of the game and you have to kill the thing you've spent all this time building in order to win).

At any rate this game might avoid the whole 'introduce undeveloped new character and unceremoniously dump them from the story in the next Sonic game' formula if it turns out the custom character is just a cipher for the player rather than a true addition to the plot. Sonic Forces could be mainly about Sonic and Classic Sonic and what's going on with them rather than a story about the new guy.

Seems slower than Modern Sonic, but it contains both 2D and 3D, so maybe this will be more like Lost World's gameplay, and by extension, more like Adventure?

Also actual wisp powers are confirmed. And Red Burst is finally in a console game.

I'd say giving us OCs to work with is a much better idea than introducing yet another character. I wouldn't be surprised if the discussion for a new third type of platforming was originally planned to be for Dreamcast era Sonic, but then somebody on the team said "Guys, holy ****, let's just let them make their OCs". It's worked well with DB Xenoverse, and both Dragon Ball and Sonic are the catalysts for the OC craze of the early 2000's.

Sterling did a video on the trailer and talked about how the story is gonna work around the character, and I also think that's the big question going into this game, but if I had to guess, I'd assume it works like Dreamcast Sonic would have worked and how Jaleel Sonic was dealt with in the original Generations: the character is obviously from another dimension (maybe he's a Sonic of a different world?), and either the two Sonic and Tails duos went looking for them, or they meet up during the events of the story, and by the end, the OC character and the Classic Sonic both leave for their respective dimensions or whatever.

Also I imagine the forum will gain a slight influx of users or at least activity, since A. There are Chao Backpack customization options in the OC creator, and B. We'll all finally have ways to create our OCs. No echidnas as far as I can tell, unfortunately.

More than a little annoyed that Tails, Knuckles, and Amy won't be playable here except as possible skins for the doll.

Severely annoyed if for whatever reason you can't use those characters likenesses at all...
