Commonly hated zones in Classic Sonic

Post by CanSteam » Wed Sep 27, 2017 6:25 am

Whenever I go to youtube for music for Sonic, such as Marble Garden, Oil Ocean, Carnival Night, or Sandopolis, I always see the same-old "Wow I hate this zone!" comments.
Why though? Can anyone explain this phenomenon as to why so many people hate zones I either love at best or thought were boring at worst?

chemical plant and hydrocity always know how to press my buttons, drowning might have something to do with it

Sandopolis is the first hard Zone in S3&K.

The others are just cases of people having dumb opinions.

Why I think people hate certain levels

Sonic 1:
Spoiler:
Green Hill Zone - they don't

Marble Zone - Very sluggish, drones on for 3 acts, difficulty curves up through during the level's acts before the players actually grasp the game fully.
This difficulty spike is not maintained in the game- if you ask me- oddly enough and regulates itself.

Spring Yard Zone - You can be crushed, there are a few Rollers found in the level that attack in very uncalled for ways (from behind, on a slope, faster than most will notice initially).

Labyrinth Zone - Also sluggish, honestly makes the game not live up to its name. Also contains water, which reduces gameplay speed considerably, and allows the player to drown.

Star Light Zone - I don't think they have a problem with this one either. Untouchable Bombs are a problem though.

Scrap Brain Zone - it's the final battle
Sonic 2:
Spoiler:
Emerald Hill Zone - hey kids it's green hill but it's not

Chemical Plant Zone - Act 2. Chamber with the "stair blocks". Fills with water. Hinders platforming ability and people who had not touched water since booting up the game are caught
extremely off guard. The inclusion of water brings two ways to lose to this section: A.) You make a mistake and don't make it out of the water before drowning. B.) You are crushed by the blocks.

Not to mention the area right after (remember this is still the second zone) has a gap that makes you fall down and redo the section, to punish players for attempting to go fast as the game's name suggested. Same section has a red spring designed to push players in to said gap.

Aquatic Ruin Zone - Contains water. See Labyrinth Zone for more.

Casino Night Zone - You can be crushed.

Mystic Cave Zone - You can be crushed. Contains The (spike) Pit, which is inescapable, even as Super Sonic.

Oil Ocean Zone - I have absolutely no idea. I thought it was too easy.

Metropolis Zone - 3 ACTS.

Sky Chase Zone - *shrug*

Wing Fortress Zone - Has multiple pits, also contains many new level gimmicks that have the penalty for failure to learn them immediately being to fall in previously stated pits.
Level ends with one of those gimmicks and a pit if memory serves.

Death Egg Zone - THERE ARE NO RINGS. THERE ARE 2 BOSSES. THE SECOND ONE HAS A VERY UNCLEAR WEAKNESS THAT CANNOT BE DETECTED WITHOUT DYING PRIOR.
Sonic 3 & Knuckles:
Spoiler:
Angel Island Zone - If they do, something is very wrong.

Hydrocity Zone - Contains water. See Labyrinth Zone for more.

Marble Garden Zone - You can be crushed during Act 2, and some less notable parts of Act 1. Act 1 boss is probably the worst designed one in the game. First "long" level in the game.

Carnival Night Zone - UP AND DOWN. Act 2 also contains water.

Ice Cap Zone - Memory says there's places you can be crushed. Also highly dangerous when playing as Hyper Sonic.

Launch Base Zone - Long. Also the Sonic 3 version of game has Big Arms as the boss, who can actually hurt Super Sonic.

Mushroom Hill Zone - *another shrug*

Flying Battery Zone - Contains notable pits.

Sandopolis Zone - Long. It's Long. The first act is long. The second act is long. Time Over is extremely common in Act 2. Also the Act 1 boss requires a large amount of thought, that
might not be discovered in the 10 minutes given in the level. In act 2, Hyudoros are a nuisance, probably scared many kids, along with the loss of light in the level as well.

Lava Reef Zone - The lava perhaps? I don't really know. Not knowing how to initially react to the enemies is a pain though.

Hidden Palace Zone - well maybe they just thought knuckles was a disappointing boss fight

Sky Sanctuary Zone - I genuinely don't remember any pits in this level. Nothing wrong here.

Death Egg Zone - Long. Time over is very possible near the end of the Act 2, or during the boss. The boss of Act 2 takes just as much thought as Sandopolis Act 1's, easily spills into Time Over.
All bosses fought subsequently make the player use the same number of rings they used to beat the first one. The game's final final final final boss, has opportunities for the player to fall.

Doomsday Zone - You're Super Sonic. The controls are new, the ring system is something you might not be ready for, and the first half won't make sense initially.
The second half is difficult if you took too long beating the first half.
In summary: Instant death is not good, so is bad pacing, and compensation for level time.

Forgot about those accursed barrels. Carnival Night Zone is the worst level in video game history because of those things.

I replayed Sandopolis for the """"""fun""""" of it and I decided I hate it.
Nothing like an infinite looping slide with no hint of what you are supposed to do, am I right? And then right after, an extremely strict timed puzzle! I honestly thought all of the Sonic 3 and Knuckle levels were pretty sound except this one and Death Egg.
Also, I never thought Hydrocity, Aquatic Ruin, or Tidal Tempest were really that bad. I would say Labryinth Zone isn't that bad either, but it's really boring and I also hate the boss.

I won't lie. I like Hydrocity, Aquatic Ruin, and Tidal Tempest. Labyrinth and Marble are the deal breakers on why I don't actually like Sonic 1 though.

Sandopolis is my least favorite zone in 3&K, but I like it anyways. I didn't have the same problem with Carnival Night, because I just figured the barrels out, I guess?
Maybe I asked my brothers? I don't remember much past getting stuck after temporarily forgetting what I did the first time through, so I don't have very many memories of suffering.

Omega sympathizes with you guys though.

Actually Sandopolis and the Death Egg are my favorite Zones in the classic era precisely because they're so challenging. I especially like Sandopolis Act II for how many gimmicks it has and the Death Egg is a blast to play as Hyper Sonic.

chaoadventures put a good list of points on levels' most unlikable points.

Off hand, the only level I can say I really hate is Marble Zone. So slow, and its the second zone. Just miserable.

I guess I have a lot of other individual problems with zones (endless slides, slow drowning, mostly things that have been listed already) but I like enough of the rest of the levels (I think, off of my own recollection now) to not hate them.

Oil Ocean Sea Horse enemies are comically terrible.

I... didn't have any trouble with Marble zone. I think it was the only zone I didn't get several game overs in.

Sandopolis act 1 isn't too bad but I think act 2 is too boring and long.

Regarding the above posted list, I always thought Green Hill Zone was annoying because of all the spikes and one spot in Act 2 where you have to traverse multiple narrow columns over a spike pit. Granted, that might not be so bad in versions that fix the spike glitch.

And yeah, Chemical Plant is way too hard for being level two. In addition to the aforementioned issues, there's the part where you have to jump on to small moving platforms over the muck, the collapsing floors, and the fact the boss arena has said collapsing floors(I'm not sure any other boss fight in the game contains such a death trap). After Chemical Plant, I'd argue the game doesn't get hard again until Metropolis.

Also, I love Hydrocity, but hate the opening sections of each act and wish Sonic alone had a means of taking the high road at the start of Act 1.

And the Barrel of Doom never gave me trouble, but then again, by the time I first played Carnival Night, the answer had already been plastered all over the internet. Act 1's Boss, with it's apparent invincibility and non-standard weakness gave me much more trouble when I played that zone for the first time.
Just so you know, I am blind.

I always thought Green Hill was particularly bland, but that's probably due to the oversaturation of the level type in Sonic games.

Yeah, it feels like nearly every Sonic game has at least 1 Green Hill-type level, and even among the Genesis Trilogy, Green Hill hasn't aged as well as Emerald Hill, Angel Island, or Mushroom Hill in my opinion. Then again, I'd argue Sonic 1 hasn't aged as well as Sonic 2 or 3K in general, and even as a child, I thought Sonic 1 felt clunky compared to its immediate sequels.

I also much prefer Casino Night and Carnival Night to Spring Yard, 3K's Death Egg to Scrap Brain acts 1 and 2(remember, Scrap Brain 3 is essentially Labyrinth 4 with a grayscale pallette) and Aquatic Ruins and Marble Garden to Marble.

I've heard that Wacky Workbench tends to aggravate a lot of people, especially when they're trying to destroy the round's robot teleporters. It's probably because of those ridiculously bouncy floors.

Oh yeah, Wacky Workbench was a pain. I kept getting trapped in one end of the stage for egregious amounts of time.

I also never liked how vague and undefined it's theme is. What's the Workbench supposed to be anyway? A laboratory? A city sized laboratory? A city sized laboratory with bouncy floors?

personally, I always hated oil ocean because of it's color palette and music, idk I just find it obnoxious and for worse, in sonic mania oil ocean act 2 has a really hard boss. Dying in the boss battle, wasting all my lifes and having to play the entire zone again was a nightmare
