Favorite Zones

Sonic games, especially the classics, are defined by their excellent level design. As such there have been some impressive stages in this series throughout the years. List your favorites.

Sonic 1- The Starlight Zone is my favorite in terms of looks, followed closely by the Labyrinth Zone
Least favorite is Spring Yard, the weak early effort at the carnival/casino cliche

Sonic 2- Tie between Emerald Hill and Hill Top Zones
Least favorite is Mystic Cave because PIT OF DOOM

Sonic 3- This is a tough choice because they're all so amazing, but I'm gonna say the Marble Garden Zone, followed by the Launchbase Zone
Least favorite is Carnival Night, which is an awesome stage except for the BARRELS OF DOOM

Sonic and Knuckles- The Death Egg Zone in all its glory is probably my favorite classic stage. Sky Sanctuary comes in a very close second.
No least favorite.

Sonic CD- Tidal Tempest takes the prize. Soooooo pretty. Best theme in both region's soundtracks too. Probably the best water stage in the series, even better than Labyrinth Zone.
Least favorite is Wacky Workbench. Annoyingly difficult traps and nonsensical environments for the Little Planet.

Sonic Adventure- Another tough choice, but I think Sonic's Speed Highway is my favorite. I also like Lost World and Casinopolis.
Least favorite are Big's stages (no surprise there).

Sonic Adventure 2- Cosmic Wall for sure. Pumpkin Hill and Green Forest are great too.
Least favorite are the two kart stages.

Sonic Heroes- Hang Castle. Lots of cool stuff like the scenery switching gimmick, great atmosphere and level theme.
Least favorite is are the jungle stages, which have too much navigating around bottomless pit water.

Sonic Riders- Tie between Dark Desert and Dual Towers. Both beautiful stages.
No least favorite.

Sonic Advance- Probably Cosmic Angel, although I also like Hidden Base.
Least favorite is Ice Mountain.

Sonic Advance 2- Music Plant was the most creative stage in this game, and I got a real kick out its gimmicks when I played it for the first time. Leaf Forest and Sky Canyon are pretty cool too.
Least favorite is Hot Crater, which is a rather generic looking zone.

Sonic Advance 3- Sunset Hill, one of the most beautiful takes on the tropical zone cliche. Chaos Angel and Ocean Base are great too.
Least favorite is Toy Kingdom, a poor successor to Music Plant from the previous game.

Sonic Rush- Definitely Mirage Road. That soundtrack! Huge Crisis is pretty fun too.
Least favorite is Water Palace, a rather boring and frustrating stage.

Sonic and the Secret Rings- Evil Foundry takes the cake. Love its look, music, and level design.
Least favorite is Dinosaur Jungle. The heck is this stage even doing in the game?

Sonic Colors- Starlight Carnival! Soooo pretty and soooo much fun to play. Terminal Velocity and Asteroid Coaster were great too.
Least favorite is Sweet Mountain.

I just went/am going through a Sonic phase with a roommate, where we played through Sonic 3 & Knuckles, and then tried last night to beat Sonic 2 (Got to Second Act Metropolis Zone.) It reminded me of how much I enjoy the Sonic 2 music.

I definitely can not make it as far into the series as you, but:

Sonic 1: Starlight Zone as well, too bad I don't reach it often.
Sonic 2: Hill Top Zone is great. Metropolis Zone is also really cool, although it is rough.
Sonic 3: Launch Base. Marble Zone is quite definitely my least favorite
Sonic & Knuckles: The entire endgame, from Sky Sanctuary on is awesome (so are all the other levels.)

Sonic Adventure: Lost World, no doubt.
Sonic Adventure 2: So hard to decide. I like Pumpkin Hill and Green Forrest, but I can't say those are my favorite. Why have you cursed me with this question Ivo?

Sonic Heroes: Probably also Hang Castle.
And now I give up. My knowledge on Sonic games fails me here.

The answer to this question will be influenced by which playstyle you favor out of all the character's gameplay.

Sonic CD: It would be Wacky Workbench. I like its design a lot, its gimmicks keep the level interesting, and its music is great.
Sonic 3: Hydrocity or Marble Garden
Sonic & Knuckles: Flying Battery
Sonic 3D Blast: Rusty Ruin.

Sonic Adventure: Red Mountain as Sonic
Sonic Adventure 2: Final Rush, Egg Quarters, Cosmic Wall
Sonic Heroes: It would be either Lost Jungle or Egg Fleet.
Shadow The Hedgehog: Digital Circuit. I tend to like cyberspace-esque levels and its level design is great. Cosmic Fall, Lethal Highway, and Black Comet are very good as well.
Sonic Advance: Secret Base
Sonic Advance 2: Egg Utopia
Sonic Advance 3: Cyber Track.
Sonic Unleashed: Cool Edge Night and Skyscraper Scamper Day
Sonic Colors: Starlight Carnival.
Sonic Generations: Sky Sanctuary
Sonic Lost World: Frozen Factory Zone 1 or 3

Sonic 1: What's a Sonic 1?

Sonic 1 Game Gear: That's better. It's Sky Base. I think. I haven't played in a long time.

Sonic 2: Oil Ocean. Just because of the music and this:
Image

Sonic CD: Stardust Speedway.

Sonic 3: Launch Base. GO GO GO GOGO GO GO

Sonic & Knuckles: Lava Reef. Lava levels = Best levels. And I'm not talking about the ones that shoved it in because they could. This is an actual lava zone.

Sonic 3D Blast: Um. Uh. Wait, there's levels after Rusty Ruin?

Sonic R: Radiant Emerald. ERVYBDY

Sonic Adventure: Speed Highway. The number of cars that have fallen here is probably extremely high. It should also be noted that Sonic is a car now.
This is also just my overall pick for all characters.

Sonic Adventure 2: Metal Harbor. Yes. That's what I said.

Sonic Advance: Secret Base.

Sonic Advance 2: Music Plant.

Sonic Heroes: Um... Seaside Hill Act 1 with Team Rose? I genuinely don't like this game.

Sonic Advance 3: Chaos Angel. Act 3 sounds like you're gonna die. In the most anti-climatic level to ever exist.

Sonic Riders: Metal City. AND HE FAILS TO LAND CORRECTLY

Sonic Rush: Well, I can only say with confidence that my least favorite is Altitude Limit.

Sonic and the Secret Rings: Which ever one doesn't have "Don't Break the Jars". Who even came up with that? Why can't I break the jars? WHY ARE THERE JARS IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD?

Sonic Riders: Zero Gravity: Aquatic Capital.

Sonic Unleashed Wii (Eww): Cool Edge. Even it's Werehog stage wasn't that bad. It's a new record.

Sonic and the Black Knight: Titanic Plain... I think. I don't remember. Great Megalith sounds better though.

Sonic 4 Episode 1: Mad Gear.

Sonic Colors: A tie between Tropical Resort and Sweet Mountain and Asteroid Coaster. Yep. All 3.

Sonic Generations: Chemical Plant... On the 360. Water makes my PC lag. AND GUESS WHAT LEVEL HAS THE MOST WATER EVER?

Sonic 4 Episode 2: Sky Fortress.

Sonic Lost World: Desert Ruins. Honeycomb Highway specifically.

Sonic heroes, Shadow, 06, Secret Rings, and 3DS Lost World thank you for the compliment.

Sonic 1: Star light zone. This, green hill, and Spring yard are honestly some of the only fun zones in the game. Granted i do personally like Scrap Brain a lot but only because of the fitting challenge which i find fun. The others levels simply aren't fun.

Sonic 2: Mystic cave. I love this stages music and i feel like it makes a good balance between challenge, speed, and platforming.

Sonic 3: Hydrocity Zone. That. Music. Oh it's so good. That said sometimes it feels really auto pilot but it's still a lot of fun for me.

S3&K: Death Egg Zone. I just love this stage. It's a hard, fast, final level. And it's great.

Sonic CD: Stardust Speedway. I love the music in both regions here, and I love the aesthetic. Granted level design isnt the BEST but it's pretty fun regardless. Plus giant robotnik statue. It's amazing

Sonic Adventure: Speed Highway. If it weren't for the last part of the stage and it's music "At Dawn", I'd have to say Red Mountain.

Sonic Adventure 2: Metal Harbor. I really like this stage and A ranking it, and I don't quite have the same issues others seem to have with the rocket. As long as at the beginning i spin jump over to the spring on the right, i usually dont have an issue.

Heroes: Every Stage has some issue in design to me. None of these were very fun. My favorite would probably be Metropolis Zone for being one of the few very well designed stages in my opinion.

Shadow: None. Go home.

Sonic Advance 2: Music Plant. Best stage in the game hands down. So much fun. Love sonics little pose when he hits xylophones and piano keys and such.

Sonic Advance 3: Pretty meh levels overall... however, Sunset Hill is the strongest one.

Unleashed: Dragon Road. This stage is so good, and it's aesthetic is like kingdom valley but even better.

Colors: Aquarium Park Act 1. Love this stage and it's music. The other ones aren't bad either it's just this ones the best.

Generations: Rooftop Run Modern. Don't have much to say

Lost World: Tropical Coast Zone 3. Just because music and how beautiful it is.

Boom: None. Go home.

I liked basically all the stages in Heroes except Rail Canyon and the two jungle stages. There are too many bottomless pits in the game generally speaking, but I felt like they were only a real hindrance in those stages. The huge size of the levels in Heroes always appealed to me, and I enjoy most of the gimmicks.

Secret Rings had ill-conceived gameplay and mission objectives, but the level design was positively amazing.

I haven't played the other three.

I assure you the other three go from ok level design to out right terrible.

I can't say I think Heroes has good design overall because most of the levels feel like you slide all over the place if you use sonic, and the levels seem to discourage using the speed characters with how easily you can slide off the stage or run into walls. I end up using the power characters most so that i can simply walk around without hitting the wall and even that's boring because then I'm going slower through long narrow paths

I personally consider Shadow the Hedgehog's gameplay to be good. It requires you to do is to pay attention in the stages so that you won't miss anything, but that isn't necessarily a bad thing. I haven't had problems with completing the missions that requires you to defeat a certain amount of enemies, and the guns make defeating the enemies easy to do. The game has very few glitches and it controls well.

Also, the paths that you may need to take in the stages can be easily determined. People usually point to Lost Impact and The Doom as being the worst stages because you can get lost easily, but those two stages are ironically linear. Both stages have maps that are more helpful than they realize. You can easily complete Lost Impact's hero mission with an A-Rank by memorizing the path to the Goal Ring, then you can quickly check the side paths that don't lead to there before following the path to the goal ring. In the Doom's case, people get lost because it gives you ways to quickly go to areas that you've been to before. However, you are forced along a specific path if you want to complete the stage.

I've played Sonic and The Secret Rings, but it's been a long time ago, so I don't remember that much about its stages.

The controls in Sonic Heroes are a bit slippery, but there are ways to mitigate that. Its problem is that it transfers some of your falling speed into running speed if you hold forward before landing on the ground after falling. Rotating the control stick in order to cancel your horizontal momentum in the air then letting go of it can help. The Rocket Accel is underutilized by a lot of people; it's a great way to deal with multiple enemies with shields and it gives you a decent amount of invincibility frames if it is performed correctly.
