Commonly hated zones in Classic Sonic
Whenever I go to youtube for music for Sonic, such as Marble Garden, Oil Ocean, Carnival Night, or Sandopolis, I always see the same-old "Wow I hate this zone!" comments.
Why though? Can anyone explain this phenomenon as to why so many people hate zones I either love at best or thought were boring at worst?

chemical plant and hydrocity always know how to press my buttons, drowning might have something to do with it

Sandopolis is the first hard Zone in S3&K.
The others are just cases of people having dumb opinions.

Why I think people hate certain levels
Sonic 1:
Sonic 2:
Sonic 3 & Knuckles:
In summary: Instant death is not good, so is bad pacing, and compensation for level time.

Forgot about those accursed barrels. Carnival Night Zone is the worst level in video game history because of those things.

Re: Commonly hated zones in Classic Sonic
I replayed Sandopolis for the """"""fun""""" of it and I decided I hate it.
Nothing like an infinite looping slide with no hint of what you are supposed to do, am I right? And then right after, an extremely strict timed puzzle! I honestly thought all of the Sonic 3 and Knuckle levels were pretty sound except this one and Death Egg.
Also, I never thought Hydrocity, Aquatic Ruin, or Tidal Tempest were really that bad. I would say Labryinth Zone isn't that bad either, but it's really boring and I also hate the boss.

Re: Commonly hated zones in Classic Sonic
I won't lie. I like Hydrocity, Aquatic Ruin, and Tidal Tempest. Labyrinth and Marble are the deal breakers on why I don't actually like Sonic 1 though.
Sandopolis is my least favorite zone in 3&K, but I like it anyways. I didn't have the same problem with Carnival Night, because I just figured the barrels out, I guess?
Maybe I asked my brothers? I don't remember much past getting stuck after temporarily forgetting what I did the first time through, so I don't have very many memories of suffering.
Omega sympathizes with you guys though.

Actually Sandopolis and the Death Egg are my favorite Zones in the classic era precisely because they're so challenging. I especially like Sandopolis Act II for how many gimmicks it has and the Death Egg is a blast to play as Hyper Sonic.

Re: Commonly hated zones in Classic Sonic
chaoadventures put a good list of points on levels' most unlikable points.
Off hand, the only level I can say I really hate is Marble Zone. So slow, and its the second zone. Just miserable.
I guess I have a lot of other individual problems with zones (endless slides, slow drowning, mostly things that have been listed already) but I like enough of the rest of the levels (I think, off of my own recollection now) to not hate them.
Oil Ocean Sea Horse enemies are comically terrible.

I... didn't have any trouble with Marble zone. I think it was the only zone I didn't get several game overs in.

Re: Commonly hated zones in Classic Sonic
Regarding the above posted list, I always thought Green Hill Zone was annoying because of all the spikes and one spot in Act 2 where you have to traverse multiple narrow columns over a spike pit. Granted, that might not be so bad in versions that fix the spike glitch.
And yeah, Chemical Plant is way too hard for being level two. In addition to the aforementioned issues, there's the part where you have to jump on to small moving platforms over the muck, the collapsing floors, and the fact the boss arena has said collapsing floors(I'm not sure any other boss fight in the game contains such a death trap). After Chemical Plant, I'd argue the game doesn't get hard again until Metropolis.
Also, I love Hydrocity, but hate the opening sections of each act and wish Sonic alone had a means of taking the high road at the start of Act 1.
And the Barrel of Doom never gave me trouble, but then again, by the time I first played Carnival Night, the answer had already been plastered all over the internet. Act 1's Boss, with it's apparent invincibility and non-standard weakness gave me much more trouble when I played that zone for the first time.

Re: Commonly hated zones in Classic Sonic
I always thought Green Hill was particularly bland, but that's probably due to the oversaturation of the level type in Sonic games.

Re: Commonly hated zones in Classic Sonic
Yeah, it feels like nearly every Sonic game has at least 1 Green Hill-type level, and even among the Genesis Trilogy, Green Hill hasn't aged as well as Emerald Hill, Angel Island, or Mushroom Hill in my opinion. Then again, I'd argue Sonic 1 hasn't aged as well as Sonic 2 or 3K in general, and even as a child, I thought Sonic 1 felt clunky compared to its immediate sequels.
I also much prefer Casino Night and Carnival Night to Spring Yard, 3K's Death Egg to Scrap Brain acts 1 and 2(remember, Scrap Brain 3 is essentially Labyrinth 4 with a grayscale pallette) and Aquatic Ruins and Marble Garden to Marble.

I've heard that Wacky Workbench tends to aggravate a lot of people, especially when they're trying to destroy the round's robot teleporters. It's probably because of those ridiculously bouncy floors.

Oh yeah, Wacky Workbench was a pain. I kept getting trapped in one end of the stage for egregious amounts of time.
I also never liked how vague and undefined it's theme is. What's the Workbench supposed to be anyway? A laboratory? A city sized laboratory? A city sized laboratory with bouncy floors?

personally, I always hated oil ocean because of it's color palette and music, idk I just find it obnoxious and for worse, in sonic mania oil ocean act 2 has a really hard boss. Dying in the boss battle, wasting all my lifes and having to play the entire zone again was a nightmare
sorry if my english sucks
Re: Commonly hated zones in Classic Sonic
metropolis is 100% the worst level in any classic sonic full stop
wacky workbench MAYBE comes close but it stops being annoying when you learn the layout

Re: Commonly hated zones in Classic Sonic
I honestly don't like very many of the stages in Sonic 3 AND KNUCKLES, mainly because I'm really bad at it, so I never get past very many of the stages at all.
Also, I hold a bit of a grudge towards Chemical Plant, mainly because it keeps getting re-made even though there are much better Sonic 2 stages that could be included in newer games. This also means that I keep having to do that section with the moving platforms and the water over and over again, and I don't like it.
