Fanfic recommendations

Post by Ivogoji »

A thread for recommending fanfics. If you have a suggestion, don't be lazy, follow the format.

Getting together all the Sonic fanfics I wanted to include took FOREVAH so today it's just Sonic fanfics. Later, I'll hit Dragon Ball Z and Godzilla fanfics, then some others.

Sonic fanfics:

-stories that focus on good ol' Dr. Robotnik

Perfection by Infamousplot
Setting: OVA-verse
Summary: Robotnik remembers a time when the Land of Darkness and the Land of the Sky were one. He remembers a world full of life. And he remembers the flames that tore this world apart, leaving only him to remake the great civilization that once was...
Thoughts: A cool look at the history and motivation of the least remembered Eggman, the belovedly rotund antagonist of Sonic the Movie. A must read for anyone who likes the OVA or just the Doctor in general.

Cancer by Hawki
Setting: Sonic Underground universe
Summary: Where the Resistance saw destruction, Robotnik saw beauty. Where Sonic saw oppression, Robotnik saw order. Where Mobians saw dystopia, their ruler saw utopia. Suffice to say, it was inevitable these views would come into conflict...
Thoughts: A character study of Underground Robotnik, and really of the Western conception of the Doctor as it prevailed before Sonic Adventure redefined our world.

TGIF by Asher Tye
Setting: SatAM-verse
Summary: Snively has not had a good Friday... ever since his Uncle took over the world.
Thoughts: Don't be fooled by the deceptively simple synopsis. It's genre is given as 'Horror/Angst'. This is a raw, unrelentingly dark glimpse into the twisted soul of the most wicked incarnation of Robotnik ever known, probing the haunting depths of his psyche with abandon. The horrors Mobians experience during rocoticization as they change from flesh to machine are shown in all their visceral, revolting glory. Snively acts as our guide as we are taken through the grisly and sanity shattering routine that his Uncle calls 'family night'. You will be disturbed. You will be mentally scarred. And it's only rated K+.

Behind the Smile by NamelessMoonshine
Setting: SEGA-verse
Summary: As Cream's mom, Vanilla, looks back over the years, she sees her faults and how hard it is to have the child of the person who you fear....
Thoughts: A short fanfic that explores the idea that Cream's father is Dr. Eggman.
.... Yup. Largely a deconstruction of the stress and suffering that would realistically come about from a situation like this. Naturally, this is one of my most favorite stories, and inspired my first Sonic fanfic.

Our Father by LonelyArtist
Setting: AU
Summary: Amy was a little human girl until an egg shaped man took her. This is a story about how the creatures we know as Sonic and the gang came to be.
Thoughts: Basically, in this story Dr. Eggman is a more believable and plausible mad scientist than he is in canon, and the world he lives in is essentially the same as the real world.... aaaand the rest of the Sonic cast are lab experiments. Amy gets hedgehog-ified, most of the others are grown in tubes. An interesting idea and pretty well written. Sadly unfinished, but I wouldn't be surprised if the author returned to it one day.

Pattern Matching by Frozen Nitrogen
Setting: All of Frozen Nitrogens fanfics take place in a setting that follows the games very closely, but in which elements from the Fleetway comics and other media are woven into the backstory. This particularly story, however, is an adaptation of Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine, and thus a mash-up of SEGA canon and the Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog cartoon :P
Summary: The great datalines of the Eggman's network teem with busy, artificial life; devoted, even fanatical servants of Robotnik's schemes. But for some of these discorporate algorithms, a false lifetime of repetitive subservience is not quite enough.
Thoughts: Yeah, a fanfic about AoStH Robotnik, Scratch, and Grounder. I guess that rounds this list out! All of the humor to be found in this story only exists in a meta context however; the actual content of the fic is MIND BENDINGLY TERRIFYING. Familiar characters and features of Sonic lore are played for horror. The story begins with a sentient algorithm in Robotnik's computer turning against his authority to save the bean creatures, and follows the boss robots of the Mean Bean Machine game trying to stop the rogue computer program, only to fail and subsequently face Robotnik's unholy wrath. Soul-gnawing existential quandaries, ontological horror, pseudo-gore ridden violence against machines described in lurid detail, and lots of big words. Heavy stuff drawn from a really off-beat concept.

The Meaning Of Evil by NamelessMoonshine
Setting: SEGA-verse.
Thoughts: A short, gentle story about Eggman pondering over his role as the villain in fighting Sonic. Written in memory of Deem Bristow, Eggman's voice actor during the Adventure era, whose passing deeply effected many fans of the series.

-stories that focus on Sonic himself

Duel by Netraptor
Setting: Netraptor's stories blend SatAM's characters and backstory with the events of the games. This is a stand-alone story however, so no real familiarity with any other fanfics or media is necessary to enjoy it.
Summary: Sonic runs, Metal Sonic hunts him, and both keep diaries of the events. Will Sonic escape, or will Mecha shred him?
Thoughts: A simple but well executed fic featuring a Metal Sonic loose in a SatAM-like universe. Sonic's feelings of anxiety over the pressure of the chase are conveyed beautifully. I offer this is a short sample of Netraptor's writing; if you enjoy it or the other Netraptor-verse fanfics I suggest further down the page, then consider reading the rest of her stories. Netraptor's work is what first got me interested in fanfiction, and still stands as some of the best Sonic stories there are.

The Choice by Redbud-Tree
Setting: SEGA-verse
Summary: Sonic is faced with an impossible choice. Save Amy Rose, and subject himself to a life as a cripple, or to survive unscathed and let her die. Sonamy, to different extents.
Thoughts: One of the most fondly remembered fanfics I've ever read. Sonic is given a choice by Robo Knux- a particular reimagining of Metal Knuckles from Sonic R courtesy of Netraptor's awesome stories- allow Amy to die or spend the rest of his life in a wheel chair. At first, the reader wasn't allowed to know which choice Sonic made, and had to determine for themselves what would happen. That was the original ending that I discovered as a young fan. However, the author later went to add a few chapters exploring what would have happened if Sonic took either option, showing what his life would be like along after choosing one path or the other. I just adore well-invisioned high concepts like this. So good!

Twisted Memories by Tylec Asroc
Setting: a very detailed interpretation of the SEGA-verse focused on SA and SA2
Summary: ...The marks ran far deeper than he could ever admit. No one, not even Tails knew of his secret burden. Sonic could never admit he was afraid. His mind was poisoned with terror, but he could never give any pretense of cowardliness...
Thoughts: A one-shot in which Sonic contemplates his ultimate challenge and greatest fear- Metal Sonic. Part blasphemous concept piece, part Sonic CD adapt. Strangely, this was the author's only Sonic story to actually focus on Sonic himself. Still an impressive look into the mind of a seemingly invincible protagonist; even Sonic has his demons.

Wing Fortress Zone by Frozen Nitrogen
Setting: SEGA-verse with a dash of Fleetway continuity
Summary: Sonic 2 adaptation. Sonic & Tails pursue Robotnik to his aerial stronghold, but, perhaps unsurprisingly, the good Doctor is disinclined to extend his hospitality. Fiery battle ensues!
Thoughts: A story with a whole lot of action and a fair amount of introspection into the never ending conflict between Sonic and the Doctor. There are lots of excellent moments in this story, such as Sonic and Eggman's amusingly contrasting attitude towards what an exploding badnik looks like, or how a primal part of the young hedgehog's mind is initially overwhelmed at the sheer size of the Death Egg. Rather short for a game adapt at only four chapters, only covering titular Zone and the final battle, but an excellent take on Sonic 2 all the same.

Every one of these Sonic-centric stories also prominently features a mechanical duplicate of himself or one of his friends. Huh.

- stories that focus on Vector the Crocodile (he's my dude, dude!)

Symphonic Chaotix: The Dissonant Harmonies by Tylec Asroc
Setting: SEGA-verse, with respect to SA and SA2, but the story diverges after those two games. Essentially this fic replaces the events of Sonic Heroes with a new story, but characters and locations introduced in Heroes are all depicted faithfully to canon.
Summary: What began as a routine burglary probe has grown into a case that could break the quarrelsome Chaotix once and for all. For Vector it’s come to a showdown with an uncatchable master thief, a woman who defied & destroyed all who crossed her path.
Thoughts: I don't even know where to begin with this one.... the Wow-factor is exponential. It has everything... jaw-dropping action, gut-busting humor, heart-wrenchingly tragic moments at every turn (lots of tragic moments, like you wouldn't believe), deep and complex characters, thoughtful and original world-building, and an epic narrative that spans the ends of the Sonic world. It's hard to explain why this story is so good without spoiling it- there are so MANY shocking twists and surprises its a serioius ride. At its heart Symphonic Chaotix is a detective mystery, and damn good one at that. The fic will take the reader down one avenue after another, anticipating your every thought, casting doubt on every single conclusion you can possibly draw- you'll think you've got the mystery figured out, then the story swerves and breaks the reader's expectations to pieces. When the reveal finally comes it will BLOW. YOUR. MIND. Even after the driving mystery of the story solved, there's still so much stuff going on; in fact, solving the case is only a checkpoint in the bigger tale the fic builds towards. Unfortunately the fic remains an unfinished masterpiece, ending on what has got to be the grand daddy of all cliffhangers. Still the greatest Chaotix story that will ever exist and one of the best fanfics you'll ever come across.

A New Life by nintendofreakgcn
Setting: SEGA-verse or Sonic X? It's not really clear.
Summary: The story of Cream's birth, and the bizarre events surrounding it.
Thoughts: Only a one-shot, but it's a REALLY long and descriptive one-shot. Vector the Crocodile was just walking down the road one day and he happened upon a pregnant Vanilla the Rabbit, and now he must help her give birth to her daughter. Maybe he'll become a friend of the family? Just your typical Vector X Vanilla love story- or not so typical. There are lots of little touches here and there that make this fic really memorable. Contains realistic and unpleasant child birth.

I saw Momma kissing Santa Claus by Sonic Phantom
Setting: SEGA-verse
Summary: Vector decides to drop in on Cream's house in the middle of the night to deliver some gifts. But while that is happening, he is caught when somebody notices him. Will it end badly for the Chaotix leader? Or will he get something good out of it in return?
Thoughts: This was the only other Vector-centric story in my favorites collection besides the other two, and its bit less... nauseating than the story with childbirth. Depending on who you ask anyway.

- stories that focus on Amy Rose

Fallen Angel by Tylec Asroc
Setting: SEGA-verse
Summary: Set immediately after Sonic Adventure, Amy finds herself abandoned and alone in the ruins of Station Square. Waiting patiently for the rescue of her blue hero, what she discovers will shatter her world.
Thoughts: This one story, more than anything else, is what inspired my own major Sonic fanfiction- Ripple Effect: Open Your Heart- and sets the tone for so much of what I want to write and what draws me to Sonic fanfiction. Seemingly never stopping to catch its breath, this one-chapter 21,000-word fanfic rushes headlong into the gritty post-Perfect Chaos world Amy is now forced to live in, and the challenges to her idealistic outlook she must confront. Amy has no home; a living tsunami will do that to you. She has to find a new one now. Amy has no friends; if she ever did before, they were just birds and statues. Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles are too busy with their own problems to help her. She has to make a real friend now. Amy has no hope; hope is something a person in these circumstances desperately needs. That old optimism of hers is what gave Gamma the courage to die; she'll have to dig deep to find it again if she wants the courage to live. And the new friend she makes will need Amy's optimism even more than she does, if either of them are going to rebuild their lives after this catastrophe.
This is THE greatest Sonic fanfic in my opinion. Required reading for the school of Ivo-goji.

The City in the Image of Man by Frozen Nitrogen
Setting: Frozen Nitrogen's unique universe, in this case largely a faithful representation of what is seen in the game Shadow the Hedgehog
Summary: Part Shadow adaptation, part game-blending conspiracy mystery. A story which spans Tails Skypatrol to Sonic Chronicles, and follows Amy, Cream, and the Chaotix, as they struggle to escape the Machine City, Metropolis. Oh, yeah - and lotsa stuff blows up.
Thoughts: This story is only nominally about Amy compared to Fallen Angel, but still a good Amy fic. Really it focuses on the titular city, Robotnik's grand capital, and the heart of a conflict too intricate to sum up here. Saying too much would spoil this story, so just read it! A very cool and thought-provoking fic.

Unclear by Blue Toad
Setting: SEGA-verse
Summary:“...Why don't you help us out, instead?” The words shocked Gamma. He was loyal to Robotnik. Not this girl or the bird. How could she suggest such a thing? One-shot, adaption of when Amy and Gamma meet in Sonic Adventure.
Thoughts: Exactly what it says on the tin. Tugs on my heart strings.

From The Cage, A Little Bird by Shamanic Shaymin
Setting: SEGA-verse
Summary: Remember the scene when Gamma released Amy and Birdie from prison aboard the Egg Carrier? When Amy told him they'd be friends? That she hoped they'd meet again? Well, suppose robot and pink hedgehog had this little opportunity...
Thoughts: Well, Ivo has a favorite subject, and it's Amy's friendship with Gamma in Sonic Adventure XP. But yeah, this fic pretty much aims to give closure to Amy and Gamma's story before the robot met his end. Really sentimental stuff.

Waiting For Wind by NetsirkBlue
Setting: SEGA-verse.
Summary: Amy Rose was always waiting for the wind to blow her way. Sonamy.
Thoughts: A short, poetic meditation on Sonic's natural capriciousness and Amy's ever enduring hope. Really beautifully captures how Amy tics.

- stories that focus on Knuckles

Hiraeth by Awdures
Setting: Fleetway-verse
Summary: When the Floating Island crashed into the sea, Amy knocked Knuckles out to stop him sacrificing himself along with it. Back on solid ground she still worries, and when she finds him taking a midnight walk on the clifftops she follows.
Thoughts: This is as much a story about Amy as it is a story about Knuckles, taking a look into their feelings after the epic and emotionally traumatic final story arc of the Fleetway comic. STC's Sonic Adventure adapt left its mark on every member of the cast, and they've all lost something now, but Amy and Knuckles were probably hit the hardest. Here we see them trying to adjust and reconcile with each other after the dust has settled.
Awdures wrote several Sonic fanfics in different continuities, mostly Fleetway-verse, and really knows how to get inside Knuckles' head. I recommend all of Awdures stories.

Beautiful Burden by Tylec Asroc
Setting: SEGA-verse
Summary: Purpose is paramount in his life: he exists to safeguard the Controller. No one could ever come before the Guardian's sacred mission, not even this curious stranger, unable to leave the Island of Angels...
Thoughts: A mysterious, mute Echidna girl appears on Angel Island and Knuckles struggles to think of what to do with her, given that she apparently knows less than he does about his kind and requires constant supervision to survive on the floating landmass- made all that much harder when a completely and unrepentantly antagonistic treasure hunter Rouge shows up. Knuckles' unwanted charge over the mute waif represents a living metaphor for his duty to protect the Master Emerald and Angel Island as a whole, a thankless and endlessly frustrating task with minimal reward that he has no choice but to endure alone. A beautiful burden indeed. This is one of those stories that showed all you needed to make Knuckles the Echidna interesting was those elements of his character introduced in S3&K; everything else, even his rivalry with Rouge, is just window dressing.

Angel Island Zone by Frozen Nitrogen
Setting: SEGA-verse, more or less.
Summary: Set between Sonic 2 & Sonic 3: A tale of friendship and betrayal, of greed and loneliness and power. Or something like that. This is the story of Knuckles' corruption from proud, solitary guardian to lowly pawn in Robotnik's schemes. Also, explosions.
Thoughts: YAY MORE ROBOTNIK AWESOME. An excellent take on the 'friendship' between Knuckles and the Doctor, their time rebuilding the Death Egg together, and how Knuckles was convinced to distrust Sonic so severely. Also, lots of pseudo-science on how the crazy things seen in the Sonic universe are supposed to work, and foreshadowing of stuff from Frozen Nitrogen's other fics. Also, explosions.

Raising Knuckles by redwalgrl-RP
Setting: SEGA-verse
Summary: Someone has to raise the last echidna. Unfortunately for a certain aquatic guardian, the task has fallen on his shoulders.
Thoughts: A cute and very not canon one-shot that suggests Chaos, God of Destruction, acted as Knuckles' babysitter during the echidna's infancy. Don't think about it too hard. A very light-hearted and funny take on Knuckles' usually depressing backstory.

Three There Are by Thrippa
Setting: SEGA-verse
Summary: Knuckles receives warning that the three tribes of stones and their respective King stones must be restored to their proper places.
Thoughts: A huge and awesome adventure story in which Knuckles embarks on an Indian Jones-esque journey with Tikal to save the past and future from certain doom. Seemingly the author's attempt to answer every unasked question about the Sonic universe in one fell swoop. Questions like 'where the heck did all these matching sets of magical gem stones come from?' and 'what's their connection to Chao and ancient super civilizations?'. All around a really cool story and something that explores the 'verse very thoughtfully. Treasure hunting at its finest.

True Colors by Netraptor
Setting: Netraptor-verse
Summary: A stranger arrives on the Floating Island and calls on Knuckles' honor to let him stay. Knuckles lets him, and they become friends ... until the day a beautiful girl also appears on the island ...
Thoughts: All of Netraptor's stories are interconnected, but a few can be read on their own without a problem. True Colors is one of those stories, and indeed it goes on to be very important for the background of Netraptor's later fic, particularly those that focus on Knuckles and Angel Island. In this Knuckles takes a young Mobian into his protection against his better judgement, and must contend with the evil the boy is running from. Like any good Knuckles story, Angel Island herself is a character in her own right, and much of what makes this genre enjoyable is how the island variously serves as a refuge and battleground for the characters. This is an earlier, rougher fanfic than my favorite Netraptor story No Echidna is an Island, but reading that one first will completely spoil the earlier stories like nobody's business, so I suggest True Colors instead.
Er, a note: True Colors is like a dozen chapters or so long, but because of technology being what it was in the old days, most everyone who put fanfiction on the internet did so in one huge file instead of splitting the story up into multiple pieces. Especially in the case of a story being posted on another website before being submitted to FF.net- as it happened with True Colors- the fanfic takes up one super long page instead each chapter having its own page. Something to keep in mind with the older fanfics I've recommended.

- other Sonic stories

Mama by Jack-The-Ripper
Setting: SEGA-verse
Summary: But the memories of your melodies and soft, warm touch kept me going. Probably longer than I should have.
Thoughts: A heart-breaking if rather odd story about a Chao who longs for its caretaker (Tikal) and its thoughts on living for thousands of years before facing its final end in Station Square.

Dark Genesis by Tylec Asroc
Setting: Same as Symphonic Chaotix; compliant with SA and SA2 but diverges from Sonic Heroes
Summary: Shadow died at Colony ARK, but the legacy of Gerald Robotnik lives on. Rouge the Bat is about to discover a secret in the depths of Robotnik's lair, and a trio of villains are about to unite into the most dangerous team of Sonic Heroes.
Thoughts: A much more sinister take on the whole idea of Team Dark and their agendas. Conspiracy, corruption, and harsh concequences are the currency of villains after all. Rated for Rouge having one heck of a sailor's mouth on her in this story. She swears A LOT.
The real delight of the fic isn't its depiction of Team Dark however, but of Gerald Robotnik in the early chapters. Contains the single best reflection on Gerald's descent into madness I've ever read, and one of the coolest ideas for how Gerald's bio-technology is supposed to work. A lot of expectations will be challenged by reading this story however, especially when it comes to the origins of Shadow the Hedgehog.

Operation SQ by Netrapor
Setting: Netraptor-verse
Summary: When Knothole runs low on food supplies one harsh winter, Sonic and the Freedom Fighters seek aid from other villages. But nobody has any to spare. Spike, an orphaned porcupine, sets off to seek the dangerous fortress of robians, accompanied by Zephyer, who hates his guts-but their journey is made dangerous by hungry wolves, and the machinations of Robo Knuckles.
Thoughts: Another excellent introduction to Netraptor's stories. I offer this one in particular because of the presence of Robo Knux, Netraptor's awesome and brilliant interpretation of Metal Knuckles from Sonic R. Ask any fan of Netraptor's stories and they'll tell you Robo Knux was her most memorable contribution to Sonic lore. He even made his way into other writers' stories, like 'The Choice' mentioned above. Also, Operation SQ is just a really decent story and shows how well fancharacter centric fics can be written. There is also a manga-style fan comic adaptation of the fic by one of Netraptor's friends that can be found here.

Blue Hedgehog Psychology by SmallInsect
Setting: Sonic X-verse
Summary: The Sonic characters undergo a psychological evaluation to determine the threat they may or may not pose to the world. Or at least, that's how it seems, at first...
Thoughts: A story where the entire Sonic cast is subject to psychological scrutiny by a believable and well-written psychiatrist. It's surprising that there aren't more stories like this one. But yeah, the summary pretty much speaks for itself- what would you give for the opportunity to read a cross examination of Sonic and his friends? Down-to-earth and very insightful stuff. I love character studies.

The absolutely required reads are definitely Fallen Angel, Symphonic Chaotix, The Choice, and Angel Island Zone. If just one person reads just one of those fanfics, I consider my mission a success.

Fox Boy saw an opportunity to observe the format.
But it failed!
*running away sound effect*

I doubt I'll do Harry Potter fanfiction in any case. There's only one Harry Potter fanfic in my favorites collection (Hagrid-centric, naturally); I mostly read Sonic and Pokemon stories. The HP fandom was always too crazy for me- and I say that as someone who survived being a hardcore Sonic fan in 2006.

Harry Potter and the Methods of Rationality by Less Wrong
Setting: Mostly Canon Potterverse
Summary: Petunia married a professor and Harry grew up reading science and science fiction.
Comments: My introduction to the genre of Rationalist Fiction and listed by TV Tropes as the Trope Codifier of the genre. Easily my favorite completed Harry Potter fanfic bar none. Please note that Harry James Potter-Evans-Verrez bares very little resemblance to his canon counterpart(Most notably, HJPEV is a quintessential Ravenclaw rather than a Griffindor).

Prince of the Dark Kingdom by Mizuni-sama
Setting: Canon Potterverse combined with High Fantasy that I believe is inspired by Celtic Paganism.
Summary: Ten years ago, Voldemort created his kingdom. Now a confused young wizard stumbles into it, and carves out a destiny.
Comments: Probably my favorite single fanfic from among those recommended by Less Wrong. The Potters fled to Germany during the first war, lied about Harry's birthdate while living as Muggles, Voldemort believes he killed the Chosen One when he slaughtered the Longbottoms, and the Voldemort ruled Wizarding Britain isn't nearly as horrible as one mighthink. Also, Voldemort takes on the young Harry as an Apprentice and initiates the young wizard in the ways of the Old Magiks practiced by the ancient pagans. Sadly, it leaves off part way through year 7 and hasn't been updated in nearly a year.

The works of .
A quality author of HP fanfiction who specializes in single point of departure and who has also written a few one-shots that could fit in canon.

[url=https://www.fanfiction.net/s/10360716/1 ... olitan-Man]The Metropolitan Man
by alexanderwales.
Setting: Metropolis circa 1934, IMplies Superman is the only powered individual in the setting.
Summary: The year is 1934, and Superman has arrived in Metropolis. Features Lex Luthor as the villain protagonist as he comes to grips with the arrival of an alien god. Occasional point-of-view chapters/sections featuring Lois Lane.
Comments: A rationalist take on Classic Superman with a properly paranoid Lex Luthor fearing what kind of destruction Superman could wreak if he ever turned evil.

Pokemon: The Origin of Species by Daystar721
Setting: Kanto, probably closer to the Game setting than anything else.
Summary: Enter the world of Pokémon from a rational perspective. Instead of starting his journey in ignorance, Red has spent his years studying the creatures so central to his world... and he doesn't quite agree with all the information in his books. No time for rookie mistakes here: he's on a quest to discover the true nature of Pokémon, and maybe even find out where they really come from.
Comments: Another Rationalist fic, this one tackling the world of Pokemon. After apprenticing under Proffessor Oak for several years, Aspiring Pokemon Researcher Red Verrez starts on his Pokemon journey joined by aspiring League Champion Blue Oak, and Leaf Juniper, daughter of Proffessor Juniper the Younger who has come to Kanto to study the local mythology. Also features the Legendary Birds as forces of nature referred to as the Storm Gods, Rangers serving as Emergency workers during natural diasters and when wild Pokemon attacks are on the raise, and Gym Leaders and their lieutenants serving as the rallying point when crisis strikes. Currently up to Pewter and updates on a monthly basis.

May post more later.

The Subspace Emissary's Worlds Conquest.

Have you ever been reading a book and then you get to the end of it and you're like "Damn, I read through that too fast, and I want more!" and you try and find another book to fill that void, only for the same effect to happen?

Well fear not, because I have just posted the longest piece of literature ever written at 4,024,038 words and 220 chapters.

Get on it, Ivo. I know how much you love your fanfics.

The fact that's it is the longest work of fiction in recorded history doesn't really intimidate me.

It's the fact that thing is also still updating, regularly, that I find scary...

Seriously though, that monstrosity is 220 chapters long and each chapter is roughly the size of Fallen Angel or longer! That's like... if someone made a transcript of the One Piece anime (or Pokemon, or Jo-Jo's Bizarre Adventure) and put every episode into one story.

4 million words might take me a few months to read, but considering that Wikipedia's List of the Longest Novels ever published includes some multi-volume works, I have to wonder if it's really the longest work of fiction if you treat novel series and more divided serials as single works. The above mentioned Prince of the Dark Kingdom is well pass the 1 million mark, but it is internally divided into 7 books(the last likely less than half finished) like the main HP Canon, and Worm by Wildbo, which comes in at a meaty 1.7 Million has it's 300 or so chapters organized into 30 Arcs and will likely beturned into a novel series if Wildbo succeeds in getting it published in hardcopy. The question of where do you draw the line betwen a single work and multiple works set in the same continuity aside, what makes the above listed 4M+ work intimidating is that it only has 220 chapters. That's an average chapter length at least twice the upper limit of what I'm comfortable reading(I've been known to read for hours on end, but I still prefer to read works where individual chapters are short enough that the next good place to take a break isn't likely to be over an hour away.

More on topic:

The Infinite Loops by Various
Setting: Theoretically all of them.
Summary: Yggdrasil, the world tree computer upon which all of reality runs, has been severely damaged. In order to prevent the total collapse of the multiverse, the Admins of Yggdrasil(including at least the Egyptian, Greek, Norse, and Shinto pantheons) have set a number of universes to repeatedly loop through time. Within each universe, there is one individual, usually the main character, who serves an an Anchor for their home reality and is blessed(or cursed) to remember the events of every loop. Overtime, others from a looping universe may awake as loopers, but unlike their anchor will not remember every loop. Sometimes loopers will findthemselves in variants(many based on other fanfictions or official adaptations that deviate from canon) or even find themselves replacing someone in a different universe or having two completely unrelated universe crossover is what is known as a fused loop. Because they have lived countless lifetimes, many loopers are quite stir crazy from the boredom of repetition.
Comments: One of the longest works of collaborative fiction at over 3 million words among the loop compilations(and no telling how many words counting loops that have been posted, but didn't make it into the compilations). Honestly, I'd only recommend reading the compilations that focus on franchise you are a fan of(and fair warning, the MLP Loops is by far the largest compilation and since fused loops tend to get cross posted, many of the other compilations will see the occasional snippet with Ponies). Each chapter will generally consist with a dozen or so snippets usually ranging in length from a one-line joke(or series of one-line jokes on a common theme) to a few action/comedy scenes, though you do occasionally get longer loops that could be stand alone fanfics with some editing either divided into snippets accross multiple chapters or compiled into a single document and put as a chapter by itself). Should also be noted that there doesn't seem to be any agreed upon rules for what to do with franchises with multiple official continuities(For example, the MLP Baseline is based solely on FiM with earlier generations treated as variants, There is only one looping Sonic with his baseline apparently being a weird mix of Archie and Sega(and plenty of Loopers originating from both continuities), and the Zelda Loops are Anchored by the Triforce with the looping versions of Link, Zelda, and Ganondorf having looped in as pretty much every one of their incarnations at least once while Pokemon has separate loops for the Anime(Anchored by Ash's Pikachu), Special/Adventures(Anchored by Red, who is distinct from Ash in the loops) Manga, and Mystery Dungeon, Spyro has separate loops for Classic and Legends(each with their own Spyro and Sparx), and the Megaman Loops have Rock and Roll as co-anchors for the Clasic series(the Classic Megaman cartoon treated as a variant), X and Zero As some variant of Co-anchors for the X and Zero series, and Lan and Hub as soul-bonded co-anchors for the Battle Network series(the anime nad manga adaptations treated as variants), and persumably Star Force, ZX, and Legends will also get separate treatment whenever they come online.

Daikaiju-related fanfics:

The Bahavagad-Gita by Kaiju Alpha
Setting: Anywhere with a Godzilla
Summary: We knew the world would not be the same.
Thoughts: Short atmosphere piece written in anticipation of the Legendary Godzilla film.

How it was and How it will be by CrossoverAUman
Setting: Anywhere with a Godzilla
Summary: A group of Godzilla one-shots, some short, some long, all somewhat depressing in some way.
Thoughts: Brief meditations on annihilation. 'It's all our fault.' Worth a read.

The Giant King by Kenneth Robeson by Unitarian Jihadist
Setting: A crossover between Peter Jackson's King Kong film and the Doc Savage novel series... and the Black Panther.... and a bunch of other things.
Summary: Doc Savage and his friends, including the Black Panther, join forces with the crew of the Venture to return Kong home. But to get out of Kong’s world alive everyone must now rely on the great ape’s incredible strength and even more incredible mind.
Thoughts: A really long and engaging novel about the greatest heroes of the early 20th century interrupting Kong's climb up the Empire State Building- where Doc Savage's personal office is located- to return him to Skull Island. Except, well, Skull Island isn't exactly an 'island'. It's not exactly on this planet. As Doc and comrades all note, it's impossible for the environment the Carl Denham describes to exist on Earth... which means taking Kong home involves going to another world. And something really bad and really unexpected is waiting for them when they make it to this other world...
In large part, this is a deconstruction of all the problems presented by giant monsters like Kong, followed by a healthy and enthusiastic reconstruction of the genre that turns the entire Kong mythos on its head! It's a really intelligently written novel, and the science is often very sound. The cast is huge, including all of the major characters in Peter Jackon's film, some characters NOT in that film but plucked from other Kong movies, and of course Doc Savage's team of genius scientists/military veterans. Everyone- especially Kong himself- gets ample character development and contributes something meaningful to the epic story. It can be said this is not only the greatest King Kong story ever written, it's also the greatest Doc Savage story ever written. Most readers will probably only be interested in the Big Ape along with Anne, Jack, and Denham of course, and they won't be disappointed one bit. Heartily recommended for any fan of daikaiju or old school pulp fiction stories.

Gamera against The Great Old Ones by Jim Ryan Hamm
Setting: Showa Gamera-verse, of all things.
Summary: Features Gamera and draws from the events of the Showa-period films, 1965-1971, rectifying their sillier elements. I've attempted to place the character in a serious mythological context, positing the kaiju as an agent of primordial forces—an Elder God.
Thoughts: Unfortunately what is probably the greatest Gamera fanfic in the world and one of the best interpretations of the Cthulhu mythos remains not only unfinished, but barely even started. What we do have is lavishly written and offers a fascinating interpretation of the Gamera-verse. I had such high hopes for this story when it was still updating, but there wasn't been a new chapter in years.

Out of the Inferno by Azhriaz
Setting: Heisei Godzilla-verse.
Summary: Bass Island blows up, per Godzilla vs. Destroyah, but events take a different turn when the badly injured Godzilla takes his also injured adoptive son to Azusa Gojo, his human foster mother.
Thoughts: The summary could lead the reader to mistakenly thinking this is a story about Azusa, but really it's a story about Commander Aso, Godzilla's human nemesis in the Heisei series. Godzilla's body is approaching the point of meltdown, a condition that leaves him vulnerable, and Aso is left to ponder what they should do now that the monster is at their mercy.

New Era by C. L. Werner
Setting: Heisei Godzilla-verse, with elements from other series thrown in where possible.
Summary: Not one fanfic, but a series of sizable stories taking place after the film Godzilla vs Destroyah, representing a particularly dark and apocalyptic vision of the kaiju world. In the New Era, the greatest monster is man.
Thoughts: The link provided actually leads to a page with the work of a number of different G-fans. However, C. L. Werner is a professional author, and his fanfiction is by far the most impressive. His fic are often oppressively grim, haunting affairs choked with violence and mayhem- nothing could be more appropriate for the Heisei setting! While the first few stories are mostly stage-setting material, the later fics get really huge and epic, ultimate showdowns of ultimate destiny the likes of which kaiju fans dream about. Constant throughout all of the New Era series however is well written action; the kaiju battles are always intense and entertaining. Werner's stories served as a big inspiration to lots of other kaiju fans, something of a cornerstone to the online community. Any one of them is definitely worth a read, but Godzilla vs Cthulhu and Koumajutsu: The Coming of Bagan are most likely to catch potential readers' attention.

Voices of the Goddess by Mothrafan
Setting: Distills all of the series where Mothra appears; mostly this draws on the Rebirth of Mothra trilogy and Godzilla: Tokyo SOS.
Summary: Mothra is dying and there is no egg laid. The Shobijin must try to maintain calm within tribe while trying to rise above their own fear of not hearing their goddess's voice within. A search for a cause commences and a shocking discovery is made.
Thoughts: I story I recently began reading that focuses on the Shobijin's search for successors to take their place while they help Mothra recover to full strength. An interesting concept and very unconvential kind of kaiju story. I like its spiritual approach and how it fleshes out Mothra's supporting cast. If you don't like the other grimdark, blood-and-bullets Godzilla fics, consider giving this story a shot.

One-shots by Corvus no Genmu:
Guardian
Setting: Heisei Gamera-verse
Summary: The earth was dying, its energies fading away into nothing and They, the Fallen Ones, were striving even greater than before The Fall. The skies were darkened by their obsidian wings with their sharpened fangs colored deep from the blood of their victims.
King
Setting: Heisei Godzilla-verse
Summary: He was and still is an enigma, a puzzle whose pieces seemed far to intricate in design to risk moving to create the entire picture. And still He could bleed. And still He could not die. A god with mortality? Or a mortal with powers of a god?
Together
Setting: Heisei Gamera-verse and Heisei Godzilla-verse
Summary: They walked until the claws of their feet met the gentle caress of the ocean’s waves. They turned slowly, to look back at the one who was their enemy and yet not all the same.
Parentage
Setting: Heisei Godzilla-verse
Summary: That first vow was simple with a powerful command behind it. To live and protect the child that the Winged One died for. That vow was nearly broken by the dark shadow. This new vow was something greater and, ultimately, far more powerful than the first.
Thoughts: Some nice introspective pieces that manage to greatly humanize the kaiju without taking away any of their vital, animalistic traits. Very intriguing reads.

^Fallen Angel? Mission accomplished; if just one person reads just that one fanfic, I'm way happy.

If the size of any of these fanfics sounds intimidating, the really short ones are Waiting for Wind, Behind the Smile, The Meaning of Evil, Cancer, Hiraeth, The Bahavagad-Gita, and Parentage, which are all around 1,500 words or less.

Some Dragon Ball and TMNT fics today.

I'll find some epic action/adventure Dragon Ball Z stories to recommend later, for now these are all light and character focused-

Monsters Don't by Universe
Setting: During the timeskip after Perfect Cell's defeat
Summary: ChiChi and Piccolo share an intimate moment, but it's not the kind you're thinking...
Thoughts: Goten is about to be born and Piccolo is the only one in the area who can offer assistance. Contains childbirth. Yes, I have two stories in my favorites collection of big green dudes helping single mothers give birth. Similarities to A New Life are presumably coincidental...

Free Falling by DramaticFleur
Setting: takes place between the end of Dragon Ball and the beginning of DBZ
Summary: Three weeks after the lightning wedding, and Chi-Chi is doing strange things to Goku's psyche. He's never wanted to impress a girl before, especially one as strange and clingy as her.
Thoughts: A funny and light-hearted oneshot focused on Goku and ChiChi (somewhat literally) falling in love after their marraige, what with not actually being in love before they got married and everything. A very in-character take on Goku as a not-terrible husband.

Mercy Date by Orchideater
Setting: Dragon Ball era, between the 21st and 22nd Budokai
Summary: Launch is feeling generous and Roshi can't believe his luck.
Thoughts: Short humor story. Blunette Launch X Master Roshi.

Sins of the father by Natsu chan
Setting: Before Dragon Ball
Summary: Not much is said about Yajarobe. Where did he come from? Where did his katana come from? What was his family like? Another perspective. One shot.
Thoughts: Me and the individual who wrote this story are probably the only people in the world who care about Yajirobe's family or background. A very heart-breaking take on the swordsman's past.

It probably says something about me that my favorite Dragon Ball stories are about ChiChi, Launch, and Yajirobe. Not sure what exactly. Anyway, on to the TMNT fics-

The Wrong Choice by vacant houses
Setting: The mention of Bishop indicates the 2003 cartoon's universe
Summary: Sometimes, there is no right choice. Warning: Questionable morality and dark themes.
Thoughts: The turtles are confronted with a problem for which there is no solution without suffering. A very dark interpretation of a theme often explored in TMNT fanfiction.

Virus by vacant houses
Setting: Seemingly the 2003 cartoon's universe
Summary: Oneshot. For what reasons would a turtle misuse their powers? Companion to Shadowpuppet, Stranded and Undercurrent. Won second place in the 2011 Horror category.
Thoughts: A dark take on Donatello's role within the team and on what would happen if the turtles gained supernatural powers. Shadowpuppet, Stranded, and Undercurrent are other vignettes that explore the same theme with the other turtles.

The One True Shredder by mdizzle
Setting: 2003 cartoon's universe
Summmary: Three Shredders? All with a superiority complex? On the same rooftop? With the same exact catch phrase? This can't end well.
Thoughts: An amusing oneshot involving the Utrom Shredder, the Tengu Shredder, and Cyber Shredder arguing over who is better.

Underdark by Nekotsuki
Setting: 2003 cartoon's universe
Summary: He’s hanging upside down in the middle of the great underdark, weighed down by a half hysterical turtle in the middle of a bunch of pipes and water and rock that are conspiring to kill us both off, and Leo still manages to sound like he Has A Plan.
Thoughts: Leonardo and Michelangelo fall down a sewer pipe and are probably going to die. Leo pretends he's still in control of the situation and Mikey pretends he can still come up with good one-liners. Swerves from dark to terrifying to heartwarming to deconstruction-y stuff.

The Greatest Enemy by Kay the Cricketed
Setting: Mirage-verse
Summary: [Drabble based off of Mirage's Return to New York comic book arc] After the Shredder's defeat, Leonardo contemplates his reasons for giving Shredder a proper burial.
Thoughts: Stories set in the Mirage-verse are rare enough, but a poignant look at the conflict between the original TMNT and the original Shredder is quite a find.

Star Wars fanfics:

The Father by frodogenic
Setting: AU, diverges from canon ten years after Revenge of the Sith.
Summary: Ten years after ROTS, tormenting nightmares of his unborn child drive Darth Vader to extraordinary measures with unexpectedly drastic consequences. Clearly, experience has taught Darth Vader nothing...
Thoughts: Guilt over his supposed murder of Padme's children convinces Vader to create replacement offspring through artificial means. However, Luke and Leia's connection to the Force causes them to react to this new development in such a way as to dramatically alter the OT's sequence of events. This is a very long but highly enjoyable fanfic; the grand finale is worth every chapter it takes to get there.

RESUME FOR Vader, Lord Darth by frodogenic
Summary: Experienced Sith Lord seeking full-time employment in the field of total galactic domination.
Thoughts: A comedic summation of Vader's 'credentials' in resume format.

To Turn To The Dark Side, Press Three by frodogenic
Setting: After Attack of the Clones.
Summary: Anakin Skywalker discovers that the worst part about losing his arm is trying to convince the Republic Health Insurance Agency to pay for it. Because if anything will turn you to the Dark Side, it's HMOs...
Thoughts: Another comedic story by the same author.

Where Soul Meets Body by ArmedWithAPen
Setting: At some point before Attack of the Clones
Summary: Long before the Clone Wars' inception, a young Togruta Padawan finds herself lost on a strange, backwater planet, with no one but a mysterious rifleman for company. If only she had asked his name. Shaak Ti/Grievous friendship, at least.
Thoughts: Best pairing ever, favorite portrayl of pre-cyborg Grievous. Seemingly compliant with the old Expanded Universe, but can be enjoyed with no particular knowledge of the Star Wars setting, outside of the irony that Grievous and Shaaki Ti will go on to be bitter adversaries during the Clone Wars.

Descent Into The Dark
Setting: Takes place in an AU, but the story is set so far in the past relative to the events of the movies that this isn't particularly important.
Summary: 300 years before The Phantom Menace, and shortly before becoming a staple on the Jedi Council, Yoda is a very different Jedi. While visiting his home world, a strange experience in the Force leads him on a quest that could cost him his soul.
Thoughts: An intriguing take on Yoda's first brush with the Dark Side as a, er, slightly less old Jedi. Notable for developing Yoda's home planet and species in great detail, something that was always left a mystery in Star Wars canon/Expanded Universe materials.

I sometimes read fanfics, and would love to recommend some, but my tastes tend to be in the direction of, "This lovable character is now a psycho" or, "Let's turn an innocent and fun story depressing based on how reality works" or, "This pairing has no basis in canon but the author spent a lot of time presenting a way it could work"

I'd like to share some that are more normal, like, ones that are more along the lines of an anime filler episode. Those aren't the kind of fics I end up reading, though.
Vampires smell good.

Hey, my all-time favorite Bleach fanfic has Grimmjow/Karin as one of it's main pairings, and I'm pretty sure they've never even met in canon. Iit's also quite a bit darker and edgier than canon. The only reason I haven't mentioned it before is that even the heavily censored ff.net version stretches the limits of what's allowed for an M-rated fic and I read the uncut version on AFF.

Post by Jeffery Mewtamer »

Since the thread master insists:
No link as the first chapter is definitely not work safe, and I don't think the author's FF.net profile is work safe either:
Prize of Victory by Nova Alexandria
Setting: More or less canon-compliant with the Bleach Manga up to the point of departure.
Summary: Aizen has won, Karakura has been sacrificed to create the Oken, the Gotei 13 has been decimated, and most of the survivors find themselves enslaved by Aizen and his army of Arrancar enforcers. These are the stories of those living in Soul Society under Aizen's rule.
Comments: While there is plenty of heartwarming, slice-of-life fluff to be found here, this is not a story for the faint of heart. There is plenty of gorey violence, scenes of torture, and no shortage of sex scenes ranging from passionate lovemaking to a brutal master dominating their slaves. The FF.net version of the main body of the fic is heavily edited to remove some of the darker, more brutal scenes, but is still likely pushing what FF.net allows for an M-Rated fic. Still, if you're are okay with the darker elements, it's an excellent story and arguably far superior to what Kubo gave us following Aizen's defeat in the Manga.

Compared to canon, most of the Espada won their final battles from the Manga, either killing or enslaving their original opponents:
Starrk: Kills Shunsui, takes Ukitake and Nano under his protection at Shunsui's dieing request.
Barragan: Enslaves Yumichika and Soi Fon, implied to have killed those who took out his Fraccion.
Harribel: Claims Hitsugaya as her boy toy.
Ulquorra: Claims Orihime.
Nnoitra: Claims Rangiku, treats her like an abusive husband would.
Grimmjow: Captures Karin and Yuzu in hopes of luring Ichigo out of hiding, eventually takes Karin as his mate.
Szayel: Kills Kurotsuchi(who killed Uryu), take Nemu as his Lab Assistant and eventual mate, takes Renji for dumb muscle around the lab. Takes over the Shinigami Reaserch and Development Institute.
Espade 7 and 9: Dead, like in canon.
Yammy: Makes Byakuya his plaything(arguably the least pretty of the survivor's lots)

The only characters who survive the war and escap Aizen's grasp are Yoruichi, Ichigo, Rukia, Nel, Hiyori, Hachi, Kenpachi, and Yachiru. Any named Shinigami I haven't mentioned probably died off-screen within the first two chapters(though Unohana and Gin survive as Aizen's wife and her attendant respectively).

Also, several Half-hollow hybrids become important Characters, and I've tried to avoid spoiling anything beyond the first dozen or so chapters(out of 200+).

Adding some Pokemon fanfics today. This is pretty much the only fandom where I read shipping stories that much, so there probably won't be much romantic stuff after these are out of the way:

Bound By Silence by Ilex the Elder
Setting: Anime, between Orange League and Johto League
Summary: The aftermath of Brock's experience on Valencia Island.
Thoughts: A non-humorous take on what exactly happened between Brock and Prof. Ivy during his absence in the Orange Island arc. A little bit disturbing. Ilex the Elder wrote a large number of Pokemon fanfics back in the day- of which Bound By Silence is somewhat non-indicative, as they were mostly Eldershipping and Pokeshipping stories. While not always the most polished fics, Ilex writes the charactes with a huge amount of depth; I recommend all of her stories to any old-school fans of the anime. Read if you love Delia Ketchum.

Three Wishes, Three Friends by 27dayz
Setting: Anime, pre-series
Summary: On a cold Christmas Eve, a tiny kitten, a red-haired girl, and a blue-haired boy each stared up at the nightsky and made the same wish.
Thoughts: A one-shot about the lonely pasts of the TRio. Contains feels. I wish I had more Jessie, James, and Meowth-centric stories to suggest.

My Little Pumpkin by Aiselne Phoenix Nocturnus
Setting: Anime, pre-series
Summary: Six-year-old Ash Ketchum loves Halloween for its candy, haunting ghosts, and scary monsters. But the only things haunting Delia were her family's troubles, and her greatest scare didn't come from ghouls but from the possibility of breaking her little boy's heart. Pre-Series. Complete.
Thoughts: A only slightly sappy depiction of the Ketchum's household problems in which Ash's father fails to show up for Halloween. Not as angsty as it could have been, but that mostly works in it's favor; the story has a happy ending. Kinda long. Read if you love Delia Ketchum (and who doesn't?)

Only the Best Wishes by Lyra Kamiya
Setting: Best Wishes era of the anime
Summary: Travelling together! 100 drabbles about the Best Wishes trio, from the OT3 challenge, as featured on Kokoro No Fanfare. Mainly Cilan/Ash/Iris - BestWishesshipping and Ash/Iris Negaishipping, but I try to mix in the Wishfulshipping and Cafemochashipping sides of it too. Because they were too cute and too much fun for me to not write about any longer. Latest update brings us to 50.
Thoughts: A very heartwarming series of BestWishesshipping drabbles, sadly unfinished. The content is completely G-rated even though this is a OT3 fic (they have those!)

Northern Lights and Ocean Dreams by Undercityrezident
Setting: Anime, post-Best Wishes
Summary: After his loss at the Unova League, Ash rededicates himself to becoming a Pokemon Master by going on another journey to all the places he had once seen. However, traveling alone finally gets to him and finds repose in a relationship with Dawn. But when Misty re-enters his life, feelings resurface. How will he handle it? (AshxDawn, AshxMisty, AshxMistyxDawn).
Thoughts: Remember what I said in the previous recommendation about G-rated OT3 fics? Well this isn't one of them XP A bit more mature and dramatic, at times a going a little overboard with the drama part, this is nonetheless a very well written story that examines the characters' psyches in detail and manages to make the romantic resolution believable. It also has some great Pokemon battles and even a very imaginative Contest performance from each of the characters, so don't worry about a lack of action. Probably the best Tripearlshipping fanfic out there.

Wash Day by Mizz Blackshaw
Setting: Best Wishes era of the anime (yeah I know you hate me for including so many stories set in the least popular era of show, deal with it!)
Summary: Ash learns something new about Iris: how she washes her hair.
Thoughts: Confession- probably the only two reasons I have this story in my favorites collection is because I have waist-length air that is indeed a pain to wash properly and because I feel Iris is underappreciated as a character. Mostly the hair thing.

Convergence by Testing123456
Setting: Anime, post-Diamond and Pearl
Summary: When something terrible happens to Ash, all his traveling companions across the regions unite to bring him back. Elaborate plots are uncovered and latent feelings surface as the crew fights for the person who always fought for them.[Poke, Advance, Pearl, Ray shippings explored.]
Thoughts: The first portion of this story, which is now fully completed, focuses around a mystery Ash's friends uncover when they are all invited to a strange Pokemon trainer program in Kanto. There are many twists and shocking moments, presented in a tone that suggests real dread lurking behind the mystery; it's hard to talk about the plot at all without majorly spoiling the story though, so you'll have to take my word for it. The second portion of this story, which is still being updated, consists of a series of epilogues detailing more personal interactions between the characters after the main conflict has ended. The cast is very in character and has excellent chemistry. Romance-wise this is basically a downplayed harem story; none of the named ships 'win', but none of them are invalidated either. Arguably the author does much better justice to the concept than most despite not commiting to an actual romantic resolution.

Torn by Ilex the Elder
Setting: Anime, pre-series
Summary: After her marriage breaks down, Delia Ketchum finds herself falling in love with both Professor Oak and her longtime friend Spencer Hale.
Thoughts: Pattern you say? Well, possibly. Not one of Ilex's strongest stories, but one I always appreciated. Ketchum domestic drama is always great. It is impossible not to love Delia.

Pokemon: The Prism League by SoulReader94
Setting: Anime, post-Best Wishes
Summary: After competing in the Unova League Ash Ketchum is invited to the greatest competition the Pokemon world has ever seen. Now with the help of his friends Ash will train harder then every before to face old allies, new challenges, and greater battles then he ever has before. Will he have what it takes to win the Prism League!
Thoughts: Probably the most conventional- if not cliched- Pokemon fic I've recommended so far. While the early parts of the story contain a lot of grammatical errors and the like, the author improves considerably as the story progresses. Mostly this story gets my support because it actually keeps the cast in-character as opposed to... not doing that, as most of those other tournament arc fanfics out there are prone to derailing everyone's personality all to hell. Also, there's no romance at all, which in this case works out pretty good because the fic is really all about the action.

Been a while since I posted, but here's some more top notch Sonic fanfics-

From The Other Side by Awdures
Setting: confused blend of Fleetway and SEGA continuity
Summary: Knuckles has made a discovery and the choices he makes, based upon it, will change him forever.
Thoughts: Contains violence and torture. This a hardcore story. It deals with Knuckles' origins, his lonliness, and the pressure being Guardian has on his psyche. Mainly its about Sonic and Knuckles' rocky friendship. Knuckles goes through Hell in this story for the sake of that friendship. It has a beautiful, positive ending though. This fic is the best thing I've read in a long time.

The Storyteller by Roland Lowery
Setting: SatAM flavored
Summary: In a dark future where Robotnik reigns supreme over Mobius, robots of all walks of life gather to hear the one known as the Storyteller weave tales both real and imagined.
Thoughts: An old favorite of mine. A great possible future one-shot.

The Next Life Over by Roland Lowery
Setting: SatAM flavored
Summary: When Nack takes on a job to find an ancient oracle, he ends up discovering something even more valuable . . . a missing piece of himself.
Thoughts: Lowery has written some good Nack/Fang focused fics and this one is arguably the best. A heartfelt and surprising story with a decent amount of action.

The Shaman by ShinyShiny9
Setting: Any universe basically
Summary: There is a one, recognized by few, who brings the rain and tends the dewfall. To this great one all must turn when droughts or storms plague them, and he intercedes on their behalf, channeling ancient powers far beyond mortal ken. He is the shaman - and all of Mobius lies in his debt.
Thoughts: A one-shot explaining the true nature of one of the most misunderstood and unappreciated Sonic characters, guaranteed to change the way you look at him forever. A must read.

Symmetry Constant by Caleb Nova
Setting: SatAM
Summary: Perfection is built, not found.
Thoughts: Short SatAM Robotnik character study.

Reason in Madness by Scribbler
Setting: SatAM but then things from other media invade
Summary: Knuckles was fated to be Guardian of the Chaos Emerald since he was born. Then he came down from Angel Island to see the devastation wrought by war between Human and Mobian, and an interlude with a Freedom Fighter made him question fate. Bunnie/Knuckles
Thought: Despite being advertised as a Knuckles fic this is more of a Bunnie fic. Its great though, lots of character development, and I do really like how the central pairing is handled. Sadly it remains unfinished.

On the Edge by Speedy1236
Setting: Any verse
Summary: A lone echidna's thoughts as he stands by the edge of the floating island, on the border between two worlds neither of which he really belongs to. Not firmly rooted in the first, but too much rooted in it to fully become a part of the second. – poem
Thoughts: Knuckles character study. Short and sweet.

The One by DarkHymns
Setting: SEGA-verse
Summary: (Oneshot) "Super Sonic and Metal Overlord were the true warriors, fighting for supremacy over the other, for the exulting victory...for the title."
Thoughts: Another one of those one-shot character study thingers. I like when writers touch on the darker aspects of Sonic's nature; his amoralness, his caprice. This fic has a similar spin, painting Sonic as above good and evil in his own way, not so different from his enemies.

Carefree by Forgotten Muse
Setting: Fleetway and SEGA-verse crossover
Summary: Sonic becomes trapped in an alternate world with a version of himself so different he's almost unrecognisable. But he soon learns they are more alike than he thinks. In the end, it all comes down to a simple choice.
Thoughts: Awesome analysis of the Sonic of each world, their similarities and differences. I was delighted by this story when I first came across it, the author's other Sonic fics are just as enjoyable.

Too Lazy to make links at the moment, but White Squirrel is another great Harry Potter Fanfic author, with two Magnum Opuses in the Accidential Animagus(It's sequel, Animagus at War currently being on Hiatus) and the Arithmancer(its sequel, Lady Archimedes currently updating alternate Saturdays) as well as several excellent Novellas, short stories, and teasers for what might eventually be the Author's next big hit once Lady Archimedes is complete. The Accidental Animagus has Harry escaping the Dursleys by becoming a cat animagus and is eventually adopted by the Grangers and has Voldemort teaming up with Dark Lords from other parts of the world and delves into non-British magical cultures in general. The Arithmancer has Hermione as a math prodigy who tests into third year Arithmancy in First Year and just has Hermione being badass.

Also, Benefits of Old Laws, which updates alternate Fridays(and on the opposite weeks from Lady Archimedes) is probably one of my favorite takes on a Reformed Voldemort as well as the concept of Harry being Mentored by Voldemort. I will warn you, it's one of the most detailed stories I've read, being nearly half-a-million words, starting shortly after Voldemort's resurrection, and only being up to mid-November of fifth year, but it manages to make that summer and fall quite eventful. The core premise is that when a Horcrux is destroied, the soul fragment returns to the main body, resulting in restoration of the sanity/humanity lost when the Horcrux was made. As the Diary was the first Horcrux, and thus contained the largest portion of soul, its destruction leaves the resurrected Voldemort with enough Sanity to realise how stupid his first rise was and decide to pursue a more peaceful path to his goals. He adopts Harry to give himself the Heir he needs to claim the Syltherin seat on the Wizagamot, and things go from there.

A Present for Raditz is the best Christmas fanfiction ever, no questions asked. No, this isn't just me being my usual Raditz-fanboy self. Yes it is.

'...the island came into sight. At first it looked like a low grey cloud on the horizon, but gradually became larger and more distinguishable. One side of it towered into the sky in a needle-like ridge, bare and rocky. The stone cliffs met the ocean on one side, and dropped into the heavily forested hills on the other. Most of the island was carpeted with the thick, jungle growth, presenting a forbidding, rather unwelcoming spectacle.

"There's no way that island could fly," Knuckles muttered aloud. "Totally off balance-mass on one side rather than centered, not even the right shape!"

"What are you talking about?" Roter inquired. "Who cares if an island could fly or not?"

"I just think about it every time I see a new island," Knuckles replied, slightly embarrassed. '
