Movie Discussion

Post by Ivogoji »

The lack of movie discussion in this forum is disturbing.

2016 Movies:

10 Cloverfield Lane- J. J. Abrams' mysterious film that he created in secret under other titles to obscure the project's true nature. No telling what the cursed thing's really about but it's got something to do with Abrams' 2008 giant monster film Cloverfield. If you're a fan of that movie or J. J. Abrams in general then you've probably already committed to seeing 10 Cloverfield Lane without needing to knowanything about- which is just as well, because good luck trying to decipher anything about the story from this trailer or any of the director's statements. Whatever the film is about its sure to be mindbendingly terrifying and dark with a high degree of claustrophobia.

Godzilla Resurgence- you recall the Godzilla movie that came out in 2014? The one hat was directed by Gareth Edwards and made in America? Well Toho Studios wasn't satisfied with one successful Godzilla movie on one side of the Pacific. They decided Japan had to have its own modern Godzilla reboot, so they began work on a film that would be the antithesis of Legendary's version, an interpretation of Godzilla that is darker than anything that came before. And who would they call upon to direct such a project?

Hideaki Anno.

The creator of Neon Genesis Evangelion is making a Godzilla film.

Just. Let that sink in for a minute.

At this point in the production we know very little about it. The short teaser that was released doesn't reveal anything, and statements about the films content have been less illuminating than 10 Cloverfield Lane news. However we do know one important detail about the production- the special effects director is none other than Shinji Higuchi, the mastering behind GMK and the Heisei Gamera trilogy, considered the greatest daikaiju movies ever made. Which is definitely good news. And speaking of Gamera...

Gamera- once upon a time the IP holders for Diei Studios' personal kaiju Gamera announced plans for a reboot of the franchise. Then absolutely nothing else was said on the subject again. Ever. Everyone was SURE the project had fallen through. There was no way anything could possibly be happening with Gamera. And the out of the blue a whole full-length trailer appeared at the New York Comic Con just a few months ago. And Lord this trailer looks amazing. The exact release date is unknown at this time, but there can no longer be any doubt that Gamera is indeed coming back and coming back strong.

Ultraman- BECAUSE THE KAIJU BOOM CANNOT BE STOPPED. Alongside Godzilla and Gamera we have the original Ultraman also making a come back on the big screen. Japan's first sizeshifting superhero could not have returned at a more appropriate time. ALL of the great giant monsters are coming out of the woodwork now, and it just wouldn't be right if the Ultra family got left out of the action.

Godzilla Heritage- did you think two concurrent Godzilla incarnations existing at the same time is good enough? WELL YOU WOULD BE WRONG. Enter the *third* modern Godzilla movie! This is an impressively professional looking fan film funded by kickstarter, and from the looks of the trailer it promises to be amazing. The crew for Godzilla Heritage even went so far as to fashion their own Godzilla suit with a very cool design (check out the suit on DeviantArt)!

The Legend of Tarzan- because Ivo cares about (slightly) more than just giant monsters, he is also excited about new Tarzan film soon to be released. Lord Greystoke is long long long over do for a return to live action film, and finally it seems that the movie the character deserves has been made. Loyal fans of the original novels like myself have wanted to see a true-to-text adaptation of ERB's Lord of the Apes for the better part of a century, and it seems that we might not have to wait much longer. I can only pray that the film does not go the way of 2012's John Carter, a brilliant and faithful adaptation of ERB's Barsoom series that sadly flopped in the box office because the unwashed masses were not prepared for it!

Finding Dory- The only animated film Ivo cares about coming out this year. Dory has regained some of her memory and she sets out with our favorite clown fish to find her lost family. The fan art will be GLORIOUS.

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice- I'm definitely more than excited about DCs attempt to get the ball rolling on their own superhero cinematic universe than Marvels already successful effort, if only because for the first time ever Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman are going to be together on the big screen.

Suicide Squad- what everyone is really crazy for though is DCs villain movie, the only supervillain centric story the present superhero flick explosion has produced. Having grown up with Harley Quinn from her humble beginnings in Batman the Animated Series, it is moving to see her come this far. Oh yeah and Will Smith is in it. And Leto! Joker, hope he can sell it, because the Ledger! Joker fans are going to be tough to please. But I only really care about Harley.
Other movies Ivo didn't post trailers for: Rogue One Star Wars Movie, Zootopia, Ratchet & Clank, all those darn Marvel Cinematic Universe titles, Alice Through the Looking Glass, Ghostbusters reboot, sequels to TMNT, Independence Day, Star Trek, and that Harry Potter movie that isn't about Harry Potter.

2017 Movies:

Kong: Skull Island- you thought I was done talking about giant monster movies? WRONG! Because next year the world gets hit by another classic kaiju back from the grave- King Kong! Details are scarce as of yet, but so far we know that the cast includes Tom Hiddleston in lead human role and Samuel L. Jackson as a supporting character, so it will probably be awesome.

Pacific Rim 2- a sequel to Guillermo del Toro's masterpiece
that ununfortunately has faced something of a troubled production. When exactly the film will materialize is unknown because of production halts, however del Toro has given his word that work on the film will continue. Given that the tidal wave of daikaiju eiga shows no signs of slowing down I'm confident that we'll see Pacific Rim 2 before long.

Ghost in the Shell- as far as American versions of Japanese media go, there are worse options for the Hollywood treatment than GitS, but I don't think any attempt to adapt an anime could hold so much incredible promise and be so profoundly disappointing if executed poorly than this one. I'm on the fence with regards to Scarlett Johansson's casting as Motoko, but what really worries me is whether or not Hollywood can be trusted to not screw up a property as cerebral and philosophical as Ghost in the Shell. I will probably watch it one way another, but I really hope they can do justice to the source material with this one.

Wonder Woman- speaking of famous heroines getting movies we also have the much anticipated Wondie debut in the DC cinematic cabbage factory. Just like Suicide Squad, team DC aims to produce something team Marvel has yet get in theaters: a superhero movie all about a female superhero. But this isn't just any female superhero, it's THE female superhero. Now for Gal Gadot in the role of Wonder Woman I give my full support, despite the controversy with regards to her casting. She seems quite suited for the part in my opinion. Personally I hope this movie is able to do good things with Wonder Woman's mythos, because unlike Superman and Batman she hasn't been adapted a hundred times in a hundred different directions. It'll be really interesting to see what they do with the character.

Justice League- and then after that of couse we get Not-Avengers the Movie. At this point the only thing anyone cares about the inevitable League movie is what kind of villain is going to be driving the action in this franchise. Brainiac? Darkseid? The Society? Too little to go on as of yet, but speculation is sure to get intense as time goes on.

Another Guardians of the Galaxy movie, another Terminator movie, another Star Wars episode (and that's, like, all in May), another Planet of the Apes movie, another Pirates of the Caribbean movie, a sequel to that vile misbegotten attempt at cinema called Avatar, and uh, another Alien movie I think.

2018 Movies:

Godzilla 2- STILL NOT DONE TALKING ABOUT KAIJU HAHAHA. Anyway in two years Legendary Godzilla gets his sequel, in what Gareth Edwards has hinted to be a vehicle for reviving Godzilla's co-stars Mothra, Rodan, and King Ghidorah. To say it would be amazing to see an American King Ghidorah throwing down with the original kaiju power trio would be an understatement. It would be every fanboys dream come true and a bag of chips. Even if the sequel actually has something else in mind I'm still pretty interested in seeing where Legendary's Godzilla goes from here.

2020 Movies:

Godzilla vs Kong- oh yeah, and that's happening. See the 2017 Kong movie takes place in the same universe as the 2014 Godzilla movie, and in 2020 the two are gonna throw down like they did in 1962. And since LegendaryGoji is the biggest Godzilla ever (108 meters tall) they're going to have to make Kong the biggest Kong the world has ever seen. Then that's kaiju shared universe phase one. I wonder just what we get at phase two?

Apart from the DC films, all I care about in the coming years are the next 2 Terminator films and Zoolander 2.

I'm a casual to movies and I don't care.

There's gonna be a live action Sonic movie. Sounds terrible on paper and it's probably terrible in practice too!
Get ready to buy it on DVD in the bargain bin at Wal-Mart for bad movie night guys!
At least the CGI is apparently made by the people who made Night of the Werehog.

Also, I don't really watch movies all that much so I don't really know anything else.

I didn't watch many movies back when I could see, and can't say anything on Ivo's list really excites me.

Should probably track down an Audiobook of the Tarzan books and add them to my ever growing reading list(seriously, I've got 50+ items in my Amazon shopping cart, most of them Audiobooks or Audio Dramas, and it seems to grow faster than I can listen to what I already have).

I think you mean "under a list of other 2016 movies that were basically subtext and would never be seen by somebody just skimming the list because they weren't parsed"

seriously though, a lot of the movies do sound great. Speaking as a person who rarely goes to the movies (my last 3 cinema experiences were Guardians of the Galaxy, the very last Harry Potter movie, and Man of Steel) as well as a person that's sorely upset by Resurrection 'F' not being shown in local theatres, there are so many options coming in the next few years that I'm betting I'll be spending a lot of money on popcorn and soda to help with the experience.

So it'll be long, drawn out, and good for only the fight scenes before it ends on a confusing note and I'm forced to watch the next movie to even partially understand what I just watched? The slice of life sections should be good though.

Details on Shin Gojira still very sketchy. Toho is being really tight-lipped about that production. I hope we get an actual trailer soon.

Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice to hit theaters shortly. Here's the final trailer.

Even sooner we'll get 10 Cloverfiled Lane. Latest trailer.

I'd like anyone who watches any of these movies to give their thoughts on them afterwards. I'll probably watch Batman V Superman when it comes out, if I get the chance. What movies are you guys excited for?

Recently watching Zootopia myself, I have suggestions

The Live Action Jungle Book looks like it's going to be a respectful reboot

Storks is also made by the people behind the lego movie, I recommend it for the sheer quality the lego movie itself had.

so ivo i thought zootopia was cute, probably would have been more fun if i was a mom with a little one, someday maybe

i think it had a pretty relevant and topical allegory and for a kid's movie it's pretty effective at stressing this without preaching. i guess the voice acting was alright, the main characters are cute as buttons, animal themed humor was pretty clever, but the narrative kinda drops the climax and resolution in the last 15-20 mins and while that's typical for disney, movies like frozen, lion king, etc. handle the deus ex machina a little better. the flowers did it kinda didn't really resonate with me, but heyyy it's targeting kids in 90mins, can't expect literary grade writing, though when other general audience media does sometimes i kinda do

my tiger men didn't have a big part though :c oh well

i'm interested in the bfg and miss peregrine's adaptations now though ... ratchet count: 42 days <3

Neat.

Still waiting for the Godzilla Resurgence trailer. I really hope they don't go out of their way to obscure Shingoji's appearance, I really want to see what he looks like.

Pacific Rim Maelstrom is, thankfully, back on track. The director and some of the cast have been confirmed, and more details should become available before long. I imagine filming will start shortly after postproduction on Kong Skull Island wraps up.

@Batty
Those nighthowlers weren't a deus ex machina in the first place, they were hinted at during the entire movie and were there from the chase scene too.

Re: Upcoming Movies You Should Care About

Post by Lamby »

that's fair

i know they were hinted at as a plot device, but when i was fresh off seeing it i felt that it's weak and silly and undermines the subtext

my basis for that was that contrary to classical uses of deus ex machina where something comes from nothing or is a "godlike" interference that suddenly appears in the story, modern criticism of literary works has evolved to not only include classical examples but any device used to force a happy ending, comedic relief, or sudden closure. what made them a deus machina to me isn't their existence, it's that the characters deduce this not on their own, but like in euripides' play medea in which someone else gives the character information and indirectly saves the day. in this case the plot point night howlers are flowers would never have occurred to judy if not for some story anecdote from the parents at the right moment or so it seemed

i do remember more hints now that you say that so maybe i was being more abstract with my analysis and could have run with tolkien's reasonable argument a "dues ex machina" in terms of plot structure that has already been acknowledged already is something else entirely buuuut idk that's just the school of thought as a lady of literature i have

but like i said i'm also an adult so i realize some complicated flower chemistry or lore in 90 minutes just isn't something that always happens when you're also appealing to kids unless it's a more serial cartoon

now that i think about it though and after time passed the flowers could be more symbolism than something i should take literally, so my opinion might be changing the more i see it.

___

i'm still waiting to know more about sly cooper if it's even still happening; i'm assuming sonys waiting to see how r&c does, oh well
