The Animation General
Re: The Animation General
YOU LEAVE MY MONSTER GIRLS ALONE YOU BIG BULLY

One important thing to note is that Cartoon Network and Nickelodeon are awful when it comes to having a "darling".
At the moment, Cartoon Network is running a lot of teen titans go and everything else loses its timeslot to it. Nickelodeon is a lot more obvious with spongebob but at least we get earlier seasons to balance it out. Mind you, before CN's darling was Johnny Test.
Since I don't think any of us can be aware of what watching japanese television is like (i'm sure we'd be watching their comedy shows) I can't say for certain how bad shows like Nova pointed out would be in our face all the time versus how bad the west is in what they give us. Adult animation is taking more risks thankfully and hopefully we'll have another show like moonbeam city soon enough.

Re: The Animation General
In all fairness, how many of the mostly fanservice, little substance anime get a second season or even get a first season that's longer than 13 episodes?
Hell, how many long running anime can you think of aren't of the shounen fight, monster battle, or mahou shoujo genres? Doraemon, Detective Conan and Gundam are the only ones I can think of.

Re: The Animation General
How many american shows die before they get to finish?
How many are unceremoniously canceled and even now are impossible to even think they can be brought back?
Maybe this is all a matter of a case of the grass being greener on the other side, or maybe we all have something to learn.

Re: The Animation General
The discussion on myanimelist drifted towards someone pointing out how more recent action cartoons like Young Justice are up to par with older shows like the DCAU (arguing against my claim that western animation is declining in quality). Which induces me to point out that shows like Young Justice, Beware the Batman,Green Lantern, Symbionic Titan, etc. got shafted by the network and met untimely deaths while cheaper productions were found to take their place. Even the lousiest action anime wouldn't suffer such fates, certainly not the manga based media juggernauts that parallel those comic book based properties.
I reply to the comment about lowest common denominator pandering anime the same way I did to the moe garbage comment: more talent and effort is put into the otaku targeted cookie-cutter fanservice anime than most American cartoons a person can name. Bottom tier anime is amazing compared to bottom tier western animation.
Monster Musume is actually a really instructive example here. Personal tastes aside, it's a harem comedy slice of life manga with a one season anime adaptation. Not ambitious, grounbreaking stuff exactly. Yet the anime has excellent, fluid, consistent top-of-the-line animation of the best quality for television series, despite essentially being an otaku pandering fanservice anime. In western cartoons animation that smooth is pretty much always reserved for action shows. And admittedly while Monster Musume is exceptional in this regard as most other anime do cut corners, even those lower quality production still set a higher standard for content than western cartoons. And I have seen some pretty badly made anime in my time, but if I had to pick between the bad anime and the bad cartoons, I'd definitely pick the anime.

Re:
In all fairness, the Shaman King anime had an even more truncated ending than the Manga's original run, and unlike the manga, I don't think the Anime ever came back with a proper ending. Granted, of long running Shounen Jump series, that's the only one I can think of that got such poor treatment anime-wise(Bleach at least got cancelled at the end of the last adapted Manga arc and would've had to go into filler hell to continue).
Though, now that I think about it, there aren't that many long-running Western animated series that started good and remained good. The Simpsons, Family Guy, and Spongebob are all widely considered to be husks of their former glory, the DCAU is only a long runner if you some up all component series, even the best of the shows from the Golden Age of Saturday Morning Cartoons were lucky to make it to 52 episodes over a multi-year run, and while Ben 10 might be one of the longest running action cartoons, each incarnation broke the base quite hard.
King of the Hill is generally considered to have ended on a good note, and I hear Southpark hasn't declined like most of the other long running "adult humor" cartoons, but I can't think of many others that made it to a few hundred episodes without going to pot.
But yeah, as it stands, I'd rather listen to crappy anime dubs from 15 years ago than just about anything Nick and CN are airing these days.

I know this is pretty late but I wanted to give one of my favorite examples of bottom tier anime:Ivogoji wrote:My retort to the moe garbage comment: yes, true, but when one actually compares bad anime vs bad western animation, which looks worse? And this is, sadly, an adaptation of one of my favorite games.
And let me remind you, this is an example of modern TV anime:

New episodes of Star vs The Forces of Evil, Steven Universe, and the Loud House all in the same week.
The week that I couldn't afford to pay the satellite bill.
Ivo is sad.

So basically, CN messed up and accidentally leaked the entire fifth Steven Bomb on their website. Just thought that was worth noting.

I honestly wasn't into Steven Universe enough to keep following the show after we lost our tv.
These days when my options are limited I mostly watch Anime instead of western shows. I still keep up with Star Wars Rebels and Star vs The Forces of Evil though.

Re: The Animation General
The most recent American animation I like is Star VS The Forces Of Evil because it has alot of replay value & the most recent Japanese anime i've watched that I liked was made in 2008 called Chaos;Head & it's music is EPIC but the anime definitely needs a remake. It was based on a visual novel I wanna play but i'm prolly never gonna play it unless I get a computer cuz the phone app for it is in Japanese. Besides I usually only play games with royally brutal combat like DBZBT3, DMC3 & the .Hack//G.U. series.
Anyways back on animations- I really only watch Japanese "Yandere" anime's such as Higurashi, Elfen Lied & Witchblade, otherwise I watch HYPERACTIVE ones like Excel Saga & Girls Bravo!!!!

Re: The Animation General
The final samurai jack episode is tonight everyone.
I feel that it's not fair that people have judged this season so harshly, given all the time Gendy had it's fair enough to say that people's expectations and hype shouldn't have been as high as they were. If they weren't it wouldn't have left so many people disillusioned with this season. People sound outright spoiled in complaining about many aspects of the final season, each time when I've asked them myself it usually ended in "I coulda done it better." I won't deny that I wouldn't like to see the idea's some people had, but in the end it's up to Gendy himself to finish it off.
What I feel however is fair to say is that Ashi does inhabit a few common mary sue traits you could find in fanfiction.net if someone made a girl hook up with jack. But even then I can't hate her too much for some odd reason, maybe I'm afraid of joining a hate train I see so much these days over anything popular? Maybe I feel that she's meant to serve as a counterpart to jack himself.
All in all, I'm excited for tonight's end and hope that no matter what happens.
It makes sense.

Re: The Animation General
I was at first annoyed at the idea of Jack just suddenly getting a girlfriend that was originally one of Aku's henchwomen, but when I actually decided to watch the season all the way through, I'd say it's done okay. Not amazing, but not nearly as bad as other female characters.
I will say that it was pretty hamfisted and Mary-Sue-ish, how quick she went from (admittedly hilariously) hanging above her sister's deaths caused by Jack, even as she's completely helpless and about to drop to almost certain death, cursing Jack and wishing him a painful death, to basically being his bootycall. It wasn't as bad in retrospect, but it should have been a much longer development. And, really, considering the show's setting and the build-up, giving Jack a female opposite related to Aku was probably the best way to actually make a plausible conclusion, Jack has always been portrayed as, while strong, still completely outmatched by Aku. Also, the 7 daughters miniplot of the first few episodes was really good so it makes up for the weird Mary-Sue Ashi development.

I'll have to catch up with Samurai Jack soon.
Not having TV, of course I haven't been able to watch it much.

Re: The Animation General
I don't wanna watch it, its character designs are sooooo generic, uninspired, and run of the mill. Axe crazy "yandere" cutesy girl type, generic evil british-esque well dressed bad guy, lovey-dovey bear that subverts the "all bears/tigers/x (where x is normally vicious anima) are assholes" trope but is also evil for some reason, and generic science guy with a completely covered head. If it's good, people that watch it, feel free to tell me, but it looks way too boring and uninteresting to give it time.

I'm interested in giving it a shot, but I don't think we'll be seeing it picked up by CN. Given the way CN has been picking and choosing shows, I don't think this has much of a chance outside the shorts.
I could however see this appearing on Nick though.

@Nova
You hit every single nail on the head of my own feelings of the show that it's scary.
@chaoadventures
This is far from those lsd tier shows, and on a different level than the problem solverz which is medically unsafe to watch.
Think more so along the line of Invader Zim type of show that gets people excited, drawing fanart, and acting in a very "randumb" hyperactive mood that also gets a huge following among women because now we have a main character that's onceler/sans undertale bait. None of this will make any sense unless you're as old as me and if it doesn't the easier way to explain it is.
No, it's not going to be as bad as those two but you might not hear the end of it from other women.
@Ivo
I'll give anything a shot, something has to be pretty bad and rack up a huge amount of problems before I'm willing to write it off.

If you don't like it that's fine.
But if your time is so precious that you can't sample a series that literally takes less than ten minutes to watch from start to finish, you just suck.
