It was 100% on the list, that's why I brought it up.

Re: The Animation General
I think part of it was he had other talents exerting control over his earlier work; The Secret of NIMH was based on a book, Spielberg was involved in American Tail and Land Before Time. Another factor may have been audience expectation. Perhaps he started toning down the darker aspects of his movies to gain wider appeal and it backfired.Goat wrote: Why did Don Bluth movies get worse as time went on
Not that all of his later stuff is bad. Titan AE was quite impressive.

Re: The Animation General
If that's the case, poor bluth. His stuff is very good considering the dark aspects of his movies were genuinely tasteful. Something about the 80's having the right touch of "darkness" that somehow the 90's ignored, tried to copy, and wound up creating "edgy." I still like the animation, but why the hell did that troll get so excited from getting kissed by a child?Ivogoji wrote:Perhaps he started toning down the darker aspects of his movies to gain wider appeal and it backfired.

Instead of calling people out for being off topic, and thus going off topic yourself, please report those people and let me do my job.
If this topic is going to spiral back into off topic discussion about memes then I'm going to lock it next time.

Re: The Animation General
okay so I just finally got around to watching Blood, as in the 2000 animated movie, not the live action movie, not the spinoffs
The animation, first of all, was really choppy in a lot of parts. However, the more important scenes were smooth or at least decent. The colors were also nice. So a single frame will look good, yes, but animated... not so much.
The combination of 3D and 2D animation really didn't work and the movie hasn't aged well because of it, though the DVD was good quality. If the CGI was supposed to blend in, then they failed as bad as Disney's Aladdin there.
The character designs, though, were nice in my opinion. The characters had different faces, different eye shapes in particular, and a lot of characters had prominent lips which is something I don't see very often. I found that interesting and kinda cool.
The music was good, it wasn't particularly bad or great enough for me to take note of it.
The writing was odd. The concept was pretty vague and nothing was explained at the end.
The voice acting sounded strange sometimes but that happens when your movie has two languages that are really far apart in it, so considering that, it's actually pretty good.
It was very obvious that this movie was more of an experiment than anything. And I don't know about its marketing in Japan but all they did in the US at least is shout "BY THE PEOPLE WHO DID GHOST IN THE SHELL" over and over and hope it becomes as much of a thing as GITS did.
So overall, it wasn't great, it was okay. I enjoyed it but I'd definitely like it even more if the animation was smoother, and it had less CGI, even if the whole point was that it was made digitally.
Also: "Are you Japanese? Konnichiha" "Leave me alone" was probably the best thing out of the whole movie

Re: The Animation General
@Ivo: In all fairness, you did kind of single out Space Jam in your introduction to that list.
Is it weird that this is the first time I've heard of Don Bluth? I've heard of, if not seen, some of the movies people attach to his name above, but this is the first I've heard of the man himself.

^ It was only singled out after I mentioned it. I basically just saw Space Jam on his list and decided to post dank memes. We all saw how that went. Absolutely great.
Also, who's Don Bluth? Is he some member of Dreamworks or something? Because Dreamworks movies have gone downhill.

Re: The Animation General
Google and Wikipedia exist for a reason.
I never really experienced most of Bluth's work except for some Land Before Time movies, but I do really appreciate his work, animation variety in the 70's-80's was really important the with the over-saturation of Disney, and Space Ace/Dragon's Lair art in particular looks insanely good.

Re: The Animation General
Don Bluth is a notable animator who did many great animated movies in the 80's. The Land Before Time, American Tale, The Secret of NIMH, All Dogs Go To Heaven, but he also made a couple of bland or bad movies during a time when Disney was making a huge comeback.

Thinking about the movie ranker, I'm surprised nobody objects to the concentration of Batman films in the upper quarter of the list.
Don Bluth is one of Mormonism's greatest contributors to the arts, without whom the world would indeed not be the same.Jeffery Mewtamer wrote:

Re: The Animation General
I thought it was odd that you included so many Batman movies when the introduction declared you'd only include one movie each from long running franchises, but didn't feel any need to comment until you brought attention to it. Granted, most, if not all, of the animated Batman movies are quite memorable in their own right while most of the Land Before Time and modern Scooby movies sort of blend together in my recollections.
As for Wikipedia and Google, I'd argue Wikipedia is usually the most readily available and reliable internet source for information on American and Japanese pop culture short of reading/watching the source material in its entirety unless we're talking something obscure or something mainstream enough a major fansite or subject-specific Wiki is at the top of Google results. Also, my experience with Google tends towards, good luck finding information on it if Wikipedia, a subject-specific Wiki, or a Major fansite aren't on the first page of Google results.
That said, I'd argue answering a question on an Internet forum with Google it and/or Wiki it is the Internet equivalent of answering a question in a face-to-face conversation with look it up in a dictionary/encyclopedia. Rather condescending if you know the answer and rather dishonest if you don't know the answer. Besides, if you don't know or are too lazy to type up an answer yourself, if Googling it or Wiking it is so easy, it shouldn't be a problem to link a relevant Wikipedia article or Google results page.
To take my own advice, here's a Link to Don Bluff's Wikipedia article that should jump straight to the Filmography section.
More on topic, I had no idea prior to this thread that The Land Before Time, An American Tail, and All Dogs go to Heaven had any shared talent behind them.

Frankly Puffle is pretty right on the money on Wikipedia, a lot of bias on many spectrums can be found and gets really ugly when you attempt to break it apart.
Did we remember to mention Dragons Lair in regards to Bluth? He was instrumental in that too....
Don aside, I had a certain something stuck in my mind for a while.
It was either nickelodeon, or cartoon network that used to host a variety of flash cartoons for anyone on the web to watch. These days im hard pressed to find old internet 1.0 flash cartoons from websites that might have kicked the bucket. Anyone know if there's a collection or a library that collected and documented them?

Re: The Animation General
Wikipedia is usually pretty good about including sources.
I don't know that much about Flash cartoons in general, but the original Making Fiends and Happy Tree Friends are still available to watch on their official sites. I think HTF might even still be ongoing.

Re: The Animation General
The idea that "Wikipedia is incredibly untrustworthy and shouldn't be used as a credible source" is stupid. The site is one of the biggest websites on the internet, has a staff dedicated to making sure the articles aren't vandalized, and even have bots made solely to ban spammers. It's as credible as a regular Encyclopedia - the only difference being you can't just white out people writing "PENIS" in with highlighters in the actual encyclopedia.

Well, original flash video websites that hosted multiple flash videos/series and were for some reason linked to nick and cartoon network.
@Nova
Your right, it's because of the staff involved that makes it all so biased and untrustworthy in some parts of wikipedia.

Triert, your best bet would be to look at the huge backlog on Newgrounds—they had quite a bit of activity during the 2000s. If not you can always use the Wayback Machine and see if you can salvage anything.
Oh, and I'm not sure about this but I think that Shockwave.com still has something. Not sure though. Albino Blacksheep is still online, but nobody really uses it anymore.

So, anybody else into Boku No Hero Academia/My Hero Academia? I watched the current 5 episodes on a whim over the weekend and am instantly hooked, I love the universe and how reminiscent it is of the Gold/Silver age of comic books while still being modern, the characters have awesome designs, especially Deku and All Might, and Tsuyu is my perfect frog wife
