Biggest negative influence on people.
What do you guys think has the biggest negative influence on people?
For example, violent video games, violent movies, media's portrayal of violence/people from other countries/races etc. It doesn't have to be media based, it could be people as well.
Personally, I think that the internet gives off the worst kind of influence. Depending on where you go on the internet, the age you start going and the kind of person you are. You could think that acting like a massive dick and knowing that you're never going to be caught as long as someone doesn't kill themselves due to your comments means you can always be a dick for as long as you want.
Being a faceless nobody in a sea of faceless nobodies is the perfect way to hurt and insult others with no consequences to you. If you're young and start thinking this is how you act on the internet, it can really make you a different person as you grow up. It did for me.
Not only that, but fads and things that could negatively affect your life can be reinforced via the internet. Instead of people telling you not think like this because it's unhealthy, or in some sad cases, bully you so you change your way. You instead are reinforced to think this way from the internet just being a safe space for a lot of people, ideas and ideals.
How about you guys, do you think there are other things you think have bigger negative influences on people?

I think schools have the biggest negative influence. There's so much people the teachers can't sit down and help one person catch up with the others and it's where petty drama within the student body against you can really hurt you.

I've seen that actually you can regularly tell people to kill themselves or that you'll kill them on the internet and still have friends, sadlyretrolinkx wrote:You could think that acting like a massive dick and knowing that you're never going to be caught as long as someone doesn't kill themselves due to your comments means you can always be a dick for as long as you want.
The biggest influence on anybody is their environment - the people they are around, such as family, friends, peers. This can of course end up being negative.

Generalizations ahead.
A bad family life, for sure. The home is supposed to be a safe haven. Take that away, where can a kid seeking no hostility go? Kids don't have much independence, so they go home anyway and adapt for the unhealthy environment. Whether they become hostile themselves or get beaten down is irrelevant, as neither is a desirable outcome. Violence in family life is a huge negative influence, but the worst part is that, unlike most other negative influences, it is rarely one that the child can escape from.

I'm going to say Religious Intolerants have the largest negative impact on society.
Among other things, this minority has:
-Started Wars including a significant fraction of those waged in living memory.
-Are arguably the chief cause of guilt and self-hatred among homosexuals and sexual guilt in general.
-Tend to be among the biggest opponents to scientific advancement.
-Lead people to be distrustful of religious individuals in general(Case in-point: Al-Qaeda and ISIS are arguably the main reason there is so much anti-Muslim sentiment in America).
-Are often the biggest opponents to social progress.
-Are arguably the reason the related issues of abortion, contraception, and sexual education are such hot button items.
-Are among the biggest proponents of censorship.
-Are more likely to go to extremes to indoctrinate their children in their way of thinking instead of letting the child form their own opinions.
-Tend to be among the biggest proponents for punishing victimless acts and for valuing retribution over minimizing harm when it comes to the treatment of criminals.
-Have a bad habit of driving otherwise rational atheists to becoming militant atheists.
Hell, I'd argue much of the negatives of the Internet Retro talks about would dry up if not for the religiously intolerant. Most of the negatives of human nature existed long before the Internet and would likely survive any cataclysm that would destroy the Internet without destroying humanity, and I'm fairly sure the statistics actually show crime and violence to be at historic lows on average. It's not that the Internet is corrupting people en masse so much as these behaviors have always existed and the Internet makes it possible to hear about the bad things happening all over the world instead of being limited to hearing about the bad things that happen in your hometown. Of course, the flip side is that you can also hear about the good things happening all around the world instead of being limited to hearing about the good things happening in your hometown.

People who fight for a cause and shove it down everyone's throat when they themselves don't even live by the rules they want to force others to follow.
Websites where people can gather and talk about how much they hate something. Literal echo chambers where you're brainwashed into believing that there's only one right answer to every solution.
Governments that tell people to live freely and work hard, but kill millions of people who disagree with their flawed ideology for no reason other than to make a point that their country is the best and will forever be the best.
Religion to some extent I guess.

I blame facebook. My facebook feed is pure cancer, I think I lose some of my life span just looking at it. It's like a concentrated liquor distilled from the overflow of 4chan and reddit.
