I used to be scared to go in them because the covers for horror movies would terrify me
Then I learned to read and would just avoid the sections marked "horror" and "new release" (which would often contain horror films).
Aaaaaand then they all started going out of business around me by the time I stopped being bothered by (most) scary imagery. I think I was in 8th or 9th grade when the Blockbuster closed down. Hollywood Video wasn't far after it. Movie Trading Co is still around, though, but they're more for used movies and games and such.
I think Netflix and Redbox just kinda killed the need for specialized stores. Hell, video streaming is slowly killing the need for physical disks all together, and it's recently started killing the need for live TV. It's a really interesting technological progression.
How many of you kids are old enough to remember Video Rentals?
