The trans public bathroom thing [no fite]

House adopts bathroom restrictions for transgender students
Spoiler:
The Texas House passed a whittled down though still controversial bill Sunday night that would bar transgender students from using school bathrooms that best align with their gender identity.

The issue was part of a larger push by conservative Republican leaders in the Senate to restrict a person's bathroom access in public schools, government-owned buildings, and college campuses based on the sex listed on their birth certificate. The Senate approved legislation to that effect in March, but the House refused to take up Senate Bill 6, one of Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick's flagship bills this session.

Patrick, who threatened to force a special session over the issue, has contended it is a matter of privacy and safety for women, but transgender rights' advocates said a "bathroom bill" of any kind would target trans people for discrimination and harassment. It is already against state law to assault someone in a bathroom or elsewhere, and some cities, including Houston, have local ordinances that offer more protections in public bathrooms. The business community strongly opposed SB 6 as well, on the grounds that it would damage the Texas economy and cost jobs.
Texas revives transgender 'bathroom bill' for public schools
Spoiler:
A transgender "bathroom bill" reminiscent of one in North Carolina that caused a national uproar now appears to be on a fast-track to becoming law in Texas -- though it may only apply to public schools.

A broader proposal mandating that virtually all transgender people in the country's second-largest state use public restrooms according to the gender on their birth certificates sailed through the Texas Senate months ago. A similar measure had stalled in the House, but supporters late Sunday night used an amendment to tack school bathroom limits onto a separate and otherwise unrelated bill covering campus emergency operation plans.

Republican Rep. Chris Paddie authored the hotly-debated language, saying it had "absolutely no intent" to discriminate. Under it, transgender students would not be permitted to use their chosen bathroom but could be directed to separate, single-occupancy restrooms.

"It’s absolutely about child safety," said Paddie, from the East Texas town of Marshall. "This is about accommodating all kids."
All I'm going to say is that, like a lot of people, I know the awkwardness of having to use a restroom with a label that doesn't match how I see myself.

I'm assuming it's okay to post this here for discussion since we have here users that are transgender and users that are school age, but, I don't mind a lock if it's not.

I know some people may feel very strongly about the subject, but please be respectful and tolerant of one another in this topic! :herosurprise:

I have yet to see a good argument in favor of allowing transgender people to use the bathroom they want to.

One that isn't entirely based on emotions, so yes, one that I don't like.

If it's all the same with you, I personally don't think getting personal like that is a good idea with this subject matter. I mean, I was trying to invite a counterpoint albeit discreetly.

While I understand how this could be upsetting to transgendered individuals, I do think this is probably for the better.
Under it, transgender students would not be permitted to use their chosen bathroom but could be directed to separate, single-occupancy restrooms.
This seems like a fair compromise to me.

What's stopping a cis guy from walking into a women's bathroom anyways? There's no one guarding bathrooms so why do you care if a trans woman uses the women's restroom. It's just a place where we pee like idc who's in the bathroom as long as I empty my bladder.

I'm no good at explanations or analogies but I can try anyway, I guess.

Imagine that at birth people are sorted into groups Red and Blue.

Let's go with you're sorted into Blue.

As you grow up, maybe you've had this discomfort since birth or maybe it took until puberty to take effect, but in any case you feel that this sorting was completely wrong. You just know it is. You feel it physically and socially.

Maybe you decide Red is more your color. Of course you can go with Purple. Or Maroon. Perhaps Magenta. Whatever you feel describes your experience. But for now, let's say it's Red.

Over time, you introduce yourself as Red to various people. Some people don't get it. Some people do. Maybe you're convincing, maybe you're not and can't help that.

But it's taken a bit of time and work to get to this point.

And yet, at various points during the day, it's required by law that you either walk into a room designated for Blue people, or a single-stall room designated for people like you who don't see themselves as the color they were given at birth. Maybe the Purple people might totally prefer that, but to you, it feels like admitting defeat every day.

You feel like you're supposed to use the Red room because you're Red. You just can't help the fact that you were born under the label of Blue.

There's also the point of forcing a trans kid who identifies with a binary gender to use a separate, out-of-the-way unisex restroom could be easy bullying material. No one deserves that.

That comparison would work if people were born and could become things that were close to red and blue and other shades of colors instead of XX and XY. We're not clownfish, wrasses, moray eels, or gobies. People who have those disorders should seek hormonal treatment that helps push them to what they were born as instead of imbalancing themselves.

People don't break their arm more when their arm is already broken do they?

triert, i don't think the solution to "my brain is reactively negatively towards this one hormone and its effects on my body to the point of dysphoria and dissociation of my body from my self" is to add more of that hormone... cmon

in regards to the bathroom debate, as long as they're not harming anyone, trans people should be able to use whatever bathroom is most comfortable to them. people have an idea of trans people as hairy masculine men who wear ill fitting dresses and act creepily towards women, which is an unfitting narrative. a lot of trans women blend in with cis women. also, people tend to forget that trans men exist too.

If you want to continue this discussion seperate from the current one make another topic for that topic specifically.

My issue isn't in letting them in, it's trying to think of how we can make it hard to avoid letting people take advantage of it and avoid using "transphobia" as a defense when someone is doing something unacceptable.

I feel I need to specify that this topic isn't just about trans people using public restrooms, it's more specifically about trans kids and teens in public schools in a red state that harbors a lot of LGBT+ people.

I trust teenagers even less to not do something as awful as what I stated.

(I also think it goes against what Tsui said to throw out the transphobe accusation on the first page)

do you also trust teenagers less in terms of harassing trans students? because i can imagine a trans girl who is being forced to use the the boys bathroom would not be subject to ridicule at all, nor would it be dehumanising to her in any way shape of form, nope (/s)
