Discord Topic

Post by Triert »

Hello everyone, I think it's right about time we had a topic to talk about this neat skype killer program that most of us are probably using at this point.

I for one think servers with too many channels to talk in have less activity than ones with fewer talking channels.

I think multiple channels helps discussion a bit. If someone has something they want to talk about from, say, a video game, but the general chat is talking about a movie, then they're less likely to bring it up since they don't want to interrupt conversation. With channels dedicated to that stuff, they can drop a line and two different conversations can happen at the same time without there being much confusion.

I wouldn't doubt you, but how many channels would you need dedicated to nothing but simple general chatter?

For instance, I've seen people warn against specifying a channel for video games unless people are trying to get people together for a game. I honestly would never have anything more than 3 channels for discussion, 1 for funposting, and I think that's all a channel would need.

To say nothing on the fact that a lot of channels just simply have lurkers who don't do anything no matter what the server tries to do to get everyone involved.

Edit: To elaborate on the gaming thing, it's usually because if you spread discussion thin, your total activity drops in your server. That isn't much different than cramping a ton of people in a room, but how is anyone supposed to ever know what people want unless they say it?

I think Discord is the first program to make me feel like an old man who can't keep up with technology.

If that's you, I'd say I inherited my dads ability to keep up with technology.

The features to making a server are massive, I only feel limited by how many people I can attract rather than what I can do with a server.

Discords def need a minimum of 4 channels total, with more depending on activity and subject at hand.
