What do you think kids should know about?

Post by retrolinkx »

So I've recently been doing a lot in terms of media recently. I watched the Star Wars films for the first time at the age of 21, played some old video games from when I was a kid, got other friends into the Terminator films and watched it with them and hell, even now I'm listening to the Pokemon Gold OST.

What kind of media should kids these days watch, read, play and listen to in your opinion?

Personally I think all kids should watch Star Wars films (pre remastered) before it's ruined for them when they get to my age. AVGN puts it's quite nicely actually, all the special effects and things you see as a kid really make the film feel more alive and you would never have been spoiled on anything about it (unlike me who basically had all three plots of the movies spoiled). Also to add onto this, Terminator films at least 1 and 2 should be watched, along with Jackie Chan films and all the awfully good Schwarzenegger films just so they can appreciate how awful they are.

Video Games wise, I think Pokemon should be there. Pokemon Red/Gold/Sapphire is a must, even if they will be old as **** by the time I'd ever have kids I'd still give them a Gameboy (or another version of it on a better handheld) and let them just play through it. Especially when they're young like 3/4 so they can truly appreciate the adventure you go on in those games, since millions of people these days loved Pokemon for that exact reason, and it should be replicated. I'd probably also give them Skies of Arcadia so they can feel even more adventure from their video games. Obviously any video game could be given to kids and they'd love it, but you really have to find the right ones.

Anime wise, Ghibli films. Spirited Away, Grave of the Fireflies and Kiki's Delivery Service are some of my favourites as a kid, Castle in the Sky would be another, but I watched that as a teenager. I'd probably watch old episodes of Pokémon with them as well if they were big on Pokémon and liked Red/Gold as a kid, since those are some of the best to watch along with the films. Dunno what else though, I'd probably find your average anime that was targeted at kids, and teens and go from there. Cowboy Bebop would be one.

How about you guys, doesn't have to be related to anything I said, could be books, music, artwork etc.

Or, you know, they do.

Well, I probably shouldn't let my kids watch Gunbuster or Kill la Kill, at least until they get older, and GITS would likely be too cerebral to appeal to children, but I'd make em watch every season of Pokemon and the first Digimon series. The roll of 90s cartoons like Batman The Animated Series and Gargoyles is also a must.

I know this is really media focused, but literature counts, and I think more kids need exposure to philosophy. The most I got was transcendentalism in high school, and that is honestly a joke. Even if it had to be adapted to not be as "authentic", I think kids would really benefit from hearing the ideas of the ancient Greek philosophers or the works of the Enlightenment. The fact I couldn't touch most of this until college was insulting, honestly. There's a lot of neat ideas that young people could easily attach to and learn from.

^I hated my school for making me read that. Fitzgerald is unworthy of his acclaim as an author.

I dunno, I was alright with it. It was probably the only entertaining book I read during high school, and they made a fantastic film adaptation to boot.

To each their own.

Literature:
I second Lord of the Rings and the rest of the Middle Earth verse, though perhaps best consumed via audiobook or being read to.
The collected Works of Roald Dahl.
The Chronicles of Narnia and Harry Potter.
The Wizard of Oz and it's numerous sequels.
As many Year's Best Science Fiction Anthologies as I can get hold of, preferably in Chronological order, though this might be better for adolescents than children.

Anime/Manga:
The Dragonball and Sailormoon Manga(anime only after completing the manga, though perhaps allowing Arc-wise completion).
Other staples of the Shounen Fight(Yuyu Hakusho, Rurouni Kenshin, Naruto, Bleach, One Piece, etc.) and Mahou Shoujo genres(Cardcaptor Sakura, Tokyo Mew Mew, Precure, Nanoha, etc.).
Digimon Adventure/02/Tamers, ideally either via the Original with enough early childhood instruction in Japanese to be on par with a child of the same age who is a native speaker or via a theoretical redub.
The Indigo League portion of the Pokemon Anime.
The Pokemon Special/Adventures Manga.

Games:
Checkers, Chess, Backgammon, Go, Chinese Checkers, etc.
Poker, Blackjack, Go Fish, Klondike, FreeCell, etc.
Uno, Skip-bo, other card games utilizing non-Poker decks.
The Zork Trilogy.
Tetris.
Super Mario All-Stars Plus Super Mario World.
Sonic Classic Heroes and Sonic 3 Complete.
The Donkey Kong Country Trilogy.
Pokemon, though I'm not sure whether to start them with Red/Blue, Yellow, or FireRed/LeafGreen. On one hand, the G1 games might instill an appreciation for what can be done with limited hardware, but the G1 Remakes are superior in almost everyway to the point the G1 games are almost unplayable by comparison unless you're playing specifically for glitches. Same issue arises with GS v C v HGSS and RS v E v ORAs, and if I start them with the originals, do I make them play through just the third version or one of the pair and the third version and do I give them the remakes? And if I start them with FRGL, do I follow it with RSE or HGSS?

Television:
The Andy Griffith Show
Star Trek(all five series).
Most of the cartoons Ivogoji recommended.

Movies:
The Disney Animated Canon.

That's all my brain can come up with at the moment.
