Yep, another Castlevania thread
Yep, another Castlevania thread
Fox and I are still the only ones who play this, right
Anyway, I've recently finished Symphony of the Night (good ending, 189%) and I say that in terms of sheer quality it's the best in the series so far-- however, I still like Aria of Sorrow and Rondo of Blood (the PC-Engine version, mind you) more.
At this point in time I've beaten 1, 2, 3, 4, Rondo of Blood, Symphony of the Night, and Aria of Sorrow. I'm 110% done with Harmony of Dissonance, and I just started Portrait of Ruin as well as Dawn of Sorrow. I've also attempted to play the classic GameBoy games, but they were much too slow paced, Adventure moreso than Belmont's Revenge.
I've also tried to play Bloodlines, and it's difficult as ****. Spear dude completely outclasses whip guy, which is lame since whip guy is more fun to use. I've also played the SNES version of Dracula X, and while movement is finnicky as hell and it's yet again hard as ****, it's still a good game in its own right.
Haven't played any of the 3D-Vanias, and I don't really expect to-- The N64 ones seem to be awful, I can't play Lament of Innocence or Curse of Darkness as my PS2 is dead, and I can't play Lords of Shadow as I sold my PS3.
So, what are your thoughts on this series? Do you prefer the Metroidvania style of SotN and onward, or the Classicvanias?
EDIT: How did I type all that and forget Circle of the Moon
**** that game is terrible.

Re: Yep, another Castlevania thread
I believe I have said this before on another Castlevania thread, but here I go. I have played the 1st, and only the 1st. I want to play the second, or the third, (not later, I want to progress through the releases in semi-order.) But I have not been able to obtain them.
I liked the first. I started it due to its reputation as a hallmark NES game, and due to its difficulty. And difficult it was. But I really liked it.

Re: Yep, another Castlevania thread
I have played the PSP version of SotN, and love it to pieces. I have tried at least the original(probably should fire up an (S)NESemulator at some point), but the difficulty made it hard for me to get into.

Re: Yep, another Castlevania thread
Symphony of the Night is indeed the best Castlevania game ever, I wish I owned it :C Totally should have stolen it from my friend lol (he never even played it! I had to beat the dang thing for him XD)
Also I wouldn't really bother with any of the 3D games, they're all pretty terrible from my experience. Lord of Shadows is apparently kinda good, but it doesn't feel like a Castlevania game at all.

^Lord of Shadows isn't canon, it's not meant to really feel like a Castlevania. At least, I don't think it's meant to.

Re: Yep, another Castlevania thread
I've played the NES trilogy and IV, plus I played Portrait of Ruin on my friend's DS for like, twenty minutes, once, but that's it. I love the classic-style games, and though I haven't played any of the Metroidvania ones, I do love Metroid, so I'm sure I'd love Symphony.

So last night I finished Harmony of Dissonance with the best ending, 200%, almost all furniture.
What Metroidvania should I tackle next; CotM, DoS, or PoR?

Re: Yep, another Castlevania thread
I love castlevania, my favourites are probably the metroidvania style games. I have recently gotten into harmony of despair which is fun.
Re: Yep, another Castlevania thread
Anyone else feel like the Metroidvanias after SotN kind of start dully?

Re: Yep, another Castlevania thread
Nope, never thought that. I see what you mean though.
I always thought that the vast majority of OoE was the build up. The true plot begins when Dracula is revived and his huge castle appears. The Albus thing was just sort of preperation for it.

Ah. For Metroidvanias I've only played SotN, CotM, HoD, AoS, and PoR, so...

Re: Yep, another Castlevania thread
I do want a classic-styled castlevania game again. The last one we got was a 2.5D remake I believe.
Re: Yep, another Castlevania thread
Can't beat Circle of the Moon's final boss, it's just too **** hard. (although I'm only level 38, and I only have 3 DSS cards <_<)
Re: Yep, another Castlevania thread
Riku, you need to get the summon card and summon the hell out of Thunderbird. I'll supply you a list of where each card is obtained. Here ya go.
EDIT: Anyone else seeing card in the first spoiler with an ad?

I never played circle of the moon. Is it any good?
Re: Yep, another Castlevania thread
Eh. I'm not the biggest fan of it. It's a good game in its own right, but it doesn't stand up to Aria or Symphony.
