Which part of a game is most important to you?

Post by Tails Doll »

Which part of a game is most important to you?

I saw this question somewhere on the web, and thought that it could make an interesting discussion.
Spoiler:
I had a difficult time deciding. I've probably spent the most time playing Minecraft, which doesn't help, since it excels in most of these categories. I was blown away by Minecraft's in-game music, in fact, I got the album and listen to it on Google Play while playing Minecraft or surfing the web. Minecraft also has great multi-player, the gameplay is nice and refined, and with Optifine, I'm more than pleased with the cinematic qualities of the graphics, regardless of them being 16bit. It is also extremely lengthy and replayable.

But if I take Minecraft out of the picture, I think I can get a clearer idea of what's most important in a game. When I was playing Sonic generations, I was surprised by the awesome graphics; and the soundtrack was phenomenal. I was disappointed that there wasn't really any multiplayer experience. But the most annoying part was the sometimes quirky controls, especially in the SonicColors and SonictheHedgehog06 levels. I found myself constantly dying... Maybe I just suck. Since I only rented it for a day, I didn't really get to see how long it would before it got boring; but I think that there are enough missions and variety to prevent it from getting old.

I'd say that in games, probably the most important part for me is gameplay and fluidity. I was annoyed by Sonic Generations when the gameplay just didn't seem right, and in SA2B, I got frustrated when I couldn't get the right camera angle. So I'd say that I spend the most attention on gameplay. The fluidity of movement and ease of controls are imperative for me when it comes to videogames.
TL;DR:
My top two choices are gameplay and soundtrack.
I think that gameplay is the most important to me. The graphics don't have to be that good, and I can just mute the game and play some other music if I don't like the soundtrack. Though I still remember some awesome songs from OcarinaofTime. And bad graphics just means that I can port the rom and play it on my Nook Color ;) Like I did with the original Smash Bros and MarioKart64

I gave 2 votes to each person because it's kind of hard to choose your absolute favorite.

To me the most important part of a game is the gameplay and the replayability. If its not a good story that can be replayed I dont want it

I think gameplay is the most important part of a game, for very obvious reasons (it's called a video GAME; why shouldn't GAMEPLAY be the most important part?)

As for my second most important part of a game, I have a hard time choosing sound or replayability.

They all matter to me to be honest, but I picked Gameplay and Music.
That's why Sonic Generations is now my favourite Sonic game :3

Storyline. It's usually the only reason I buy a game and the only thing that motivates me to beat it.

Subsequently, I drop most games pretty quickly. A number of games I have no intention of completing because I already know what the ending is like.

I hate multiplayer anything. Just extra content I can't access, ever.

I don't know. It needs a little of each, besides the multiplayer and graphics part.

Gameplay is most important, obviously.
The replayability is kind of a combination of all of them. If a game has high replay value, that more than likely means that it appealed to you. As in, you liked the controls, the plot, the graphics were at least decent, and the music didn't rape your ears. A game with good replay value means that, in general, it's a good game.
So yes. Replayability is important.

Gameplay, Music, and Replay value. I couldn't care less about graphics (as long as it doesn't effect the gameplay) and multiplayer.

Gameplay because really, graphics make it look nice, but what's really important is how well it plays.

Then I chose replayability because I usually like to replay games and go alt routes or just have more challenge.

I think everything is important. Music, graphics, and art-style can really set the mood and create a great atmosphere which is really important for immersion. Game-play is important for obvious reason. Story is important for incentive. You can't complete the puzzle unless you have all the pieces.

They're all important in my opinion, yes, but gameplay is obviously the most important part. Can't have a game without gameplay. Then I chose replayability because I like games that have alternate paths and branching stories, especially multiple endings. Soundtrack would probably come as third most important, then multiplayer, then graphics.

It depends on the game really.

If it's an RPG, like a good RPG, Length/re-playability and Sound/Music, because good RPG's need to be about 50 hours long so you can do a lot of stuff in it from the start to end, and the music can add to the atmosphere.

Games that focus on Multiplayer instead of story or music, then Multiplayer and Gameplay, because if one of those is bad the entire game becomes bad.

FPS and TPS have a large variety in it what I would need, if the story is meant to be scary, Sound/Music and Graphics, if it's meant to have atmosphere, Sound/Music and Length so you feel the atmosphere.

RTS needs good Multiplayer and Gameplay. Action Adventure needs good Story and Gameplay.

Different games need different ways of presenting those 5 things, and they do it differently, you can't really put them into a single 2.

There is also an option of the game not being linear too, which you forgot, unless you count linear as being lengthy.

^ Actually, linearity has a lot to do with the length of the game. If it's like, Metroid Fusion for example, you get it done fairly quickly. If the game is non-linear, or semi-linear, like Super Metroid, then it'll take you a long time. Semi-linear, it's like, yeah, you can do it if you have the abilities to.

You forgot 'characters'.

If the characters aren't likeable, I don't care how good the game play or music is. One of the reasons FF13 is at the bottom of my preferred list is because of the characters. The only character I like in that game is Lightning. Sure, Snow's cute but god he's as dumb as a brick wall and about as useful. He's also pretty annoying with the 'hero' thing. If I could vote for a third option, length would have been given a vote.

And graphics are at the bottom of my list, right before multiplayer. As long as I can see what I'm looking at, I don't care if it's from the N64 or the Xbox360. Multiplayer is a meaningless subject. :D I game alone~

I hate games that exist for multiplayer. To me they're not worth the money it costs to burn the data onto their CDs.
Darn kids and their boost mode. In my day we had Spin Dash for speed AND WE LIKED IT.
100% Sonic Adventure 2: Battle, YEEHAW. Also ow, my sanity. But also yeehaw.

Though it's probably not the most important part of a game, but honestly, there are a lot of games that I have never played fully due to the fact that it has terrible voice acting. (Recently, I have been playing Sonic Heroes, but I can't get passed Tails' HORRID voice)

I'm going to say gameplay. More specially gameplay polish. I can grow accustomed to any gameplay style that interests me, but it's the cohesiveness of a game that really convinces me to make that purchase. If it's ridden with structural issues I'm less likely to spend money.

I hesitate to say graphics. I refer to something I call aesthetics in which I combine art style and sound. The perfection of the images isn't important to me. I'm more concerned with how unified the graphical style is with its media. For instance, Nintendo can get away with lower powered graphics because their art style matches the game so well, and that's what I'm concerned with. Music should be memorable.

Thirdly, I'll say innovation. If the game does little to build upon its predecessor then I'm less likely to support a game.
