Sega Hard Girls.

Post by Tsui »

It doesn't look like I've made a topic about this for some reason. That's weird.

So Sega's had this kinda-sorta-franchise going on for a while. What is it? Personified Sega consoles, as cute girls. They're called Sega★Hard Girls, hard being short for hardware in the same way soft is short for software. Also SeHaGirl for short. The main characters are Dreamcast, Saturn, and Mega Drive, but there's also lots of other characters, including VMU, Game Gear, and... Robo Pitcher. I feel like I should mention that Sega's been selling a lot of Dreamcast/Saturn/Genesis merch lately, too. This series has also had crossovers with Dengeki Bunko Fighting Climax and Neptunia.

Here are the characters so far:
Spoiler:

Yeah, I've been meaning to watch it myself, but I never get time to watch any anime anymore mostly because I always forget and don't like investing into a lot of stuff which is a pain.

I think the third episode has them playing Jet Set Radio or at least pretending to, it's an interesting concept and I should really give it a watch.

I discovered this series by trying to find anime with appearances by Dr. Eggman, and this was the only one besides Sonic X and Sonic ★ The ★ Hedgehog.

But yeah, basically Hyperdimensional Neptunia SEGA-only edition.

Master System is best girl.

Sounds cute, Wish I could watch it, assume ther's no English dub.

So, do they all act like sisters, or do only those from the same generation act like sisters and cross generation is more mother/daughter, or am I completely off the mark?

I haven't actually seen the TV show, because the very concept doesn't interest me much beyond I guess cameos from games, my only real exposure to the franchise is through Sega's Twitter. But I'm going to assume the characters have stock anime personalities, and I'm also going to assume that the only family-like relation between the characters would be between those who share a name, like Mega Drive and Mega Drive 2. But I could be totally wrong on this. I actually hardly care, I just find it amusing that there are official moe personifications of Sega consoles.

In comparison, Hyperdimension Neptunia is like a shoddy fan fiction that's trying to avoid copyright. Sega Hard Girls on the other hand is largely representational and historically factual, as it chronicles Sega's involvement in the console manufacturing industry, while also establishing the formulaic elements of "cute and fun". I find that the moments in the anime when the 16-bit encyclopedia show tidbits about various Sega-related material, it's both interesting and insightful to pause and scan through. Also, the anime is chock-full of Sega references and jokes, so the rewatch value is undoubtedly high for those who are interested in Sega in general. In fact, my favorite scene of the anime is when Dreamcast-san attempts to connect to the Internet through a dial-up connection, or when the girls coax Mega Drive-san into delivering a moe weather girl impression. Additionally, I felt that the last episode was touching and wrapped up the story quite nicely. Even though the MMD software that was used for Sega Hard Girls's animation made it less visually appealing than the conventional anime, I still think that the overall concept was fantastically executed.

By the way, Mega Drive-san is just precious—I mean, look at her:

Yeah, she was probably the cutest.

Best girl is Dreamcast for sure though.

Thought I'd bump this cause I just spent the last three hours watching Sega Hard Girls. The episodes were fun, and I had some laughs from them. I really did enjoy it and honestly wouldn't mind a sequel of some sort with other consoles, such as the Master System, Genesis, Mega CD or 32x. Not sure how well it was in Japan to warrant a sequel, but I'm sure it was alright.

It's by no means a masterpiece, and it's something you should watch in spare time if you're a fan of Sega games like I am, it's pretty average but I honestly enjoyed it all since the episodes were handled well, and it was cool to see some old IP's get a mention in the limelight for once.
