Chiptune: Favorite Systems
Chiptune: Favorite Systems
Poll. Was wondering primarily if you guys preferred 8-bit or 16-bit music, but I thought I'd just list the systems since it gets a bit more specific than that, I suppose. Pick 2. If your favorite falls outside the poll, please mention it!
Personally I feel the Gameboy and NES are overused in modern chiptune, but I'm very biased towards FM.

Personally it's tied for SNES and Genesis. I'm not sure if the GBA counts, but that's my actual favorite.

Weird choice there, especially since the GBA used it's CPU for it's music and thus, better sounding music meant games running crappier or something along those lines, meaning you got tinny low quality music that a lot of people disliked. I never did, but funnily enough I do find Sonic Advance 2 and 3's music to be inferior to the original Sonic Advance.
Although, it does work fine for games like Metroid Fusion that focuses mainly on Atmosphere, and nothing too intense.

As for me, I've always enjoyed the Mega Drive. While SNES could do orchestra very well, I've always preferred the action-y themes along with some cool atmospheric arcade-y themes that the Mega Drive could do very well. Plus, it was my childhood console, so I've always got that to explain why I like it.
The NES was never anything special to me, although listening to some of the tracks in Stereo is amazing, and listening to the Famicom versions of the songs, is even better.
Gameboy falls into a similar category of NES, nothing really special but I enjoyed it none the less. You can get some real gems from it. Although the Gameboy Camera has made me dislike certain instruments of the gameboy mainly for being very odd and scary back in the day, and even today I can't listen to the Dungeon Theme of For the Frog the Bell Tolls since it's just sounds awful to me.
No real opinion on PC Engine or Commodore.

I don't have an opinion on the subject, but I listen to music from Genesis games relatively often.

Needs Commodore Amiga and PC-Engine/Turbografx-16.
I'm also partial to Sharp X68000, which uses YM2151 and OKI MSM6258.

SNES because it's the only sounds that aren't like a knife in my ears
also chiptunes just remind me that EDMs being infected by awkward gaming nerds and it usually accompanies a pretty amateur craft, though not always; i like a few music acts, but it's not the depth of other EDM subgenres to me, honestly
i guess there's also like 3 genesis games that don't sound like someone killed a robot too

The SNES and the Gameboy were my two picks, though it's actually kind of a hard choice; there are certain sounds and entire OSTs on all of these systems (except for the Commodore) that I really love.
