Which one shoud I get?
Wii U, Switch, PS3, or PS4?
If I get one of the PlayStation systems I'm probably going to buy a Wii U anyway since they aren't too expensive.
Really I'm asking if it would be better to get the newer consoles or the older ones.

Re: Which one shoud I get?
I really enjoy my PS4. PS3 has a nice library, but a lot of the games on there are being ported onto the PS4 (be it through remastered editions or through PS Now).
Currently there's not a lot of a library for the Switch aside from BotW, but you said you'll be getting a Wii U anyhow so you can always pick it up on there.

Re: Which one shoud I get?
If you want primarily Japanese games and don't mind waiting for other releases, get the PS4. If you want Splatoon 2 and the other Switch exclusives, get the Switch. Otherwise, get the PS3. The only reason I'd personally bother getting the Ps4 right now is specifically for Persona 5 and the N. Sane Trilogy.

Re: Which one shoud I get?
I want to say Wii U but that's just me.
I've honestly gotten more use out of old GameCube games I haven't played yet than my Wii U, PS3, and 360 combined in recent years. I've only used my PS3 to play Mega Man Legends.
The early 2000s were very entertaining years if you ask me.

Look at what's been released for each console and go from there - pick whichever has more games you're interested in.

Get the PS3, it'll be the cheapest, has free online and already has a very strong library of games. Unlike the PS4, Switch and Wii U.
Plus, playing online is free and if you do pay for PS+ and such, you can get some good old games off the store. There are tons of PS1/PS2 games you can buy for cheap on the PS3.

Re: Which one shoud I get?
Can't speak for the Wii U.
The Switch is a really entertaining console that currently only has BoTW and MK8 Deluxe. As much as I like the Switch itself and want to recommend it, there is not a lot to do on it right now.
The PS4 has a solid line up and is future-proofed for a couple more years. Its library is strong enough to warrant a purchase if you're into what Sony puts out (Horizon, The Order, Bloodborne, Tearaway/Dreams, etc). From what I know of you, though, you probably don't. That said, it has also become the home of JRPGs.
Like the others have said, the PS3 has the best classic support, but if you have a PS1 or PS2 that may not be a factor for you. It has the best library, but the library is a little dusty and the PS3's controller is terrible.
If you want good bang for basically no buck, go PS3. If money is an object but not too big of one, get a PS4 and wait for the Flash sales, which usually bring a couple of the good games down to 30% of their price. If you want to throw caution to the wind and bank on Nintendo's first party output, rethink it.

Re: Which one shoud I get?
The games I'm looking at are
Wii U: Breath of the Wild, Paper Mario, Smash Bros 4, Pokken Tournament
Switch: Sonic Forces, Sonic Mania, Breath of the Wild, Super Mario Odessy
PS3: Sonic Generations, the Mass Effect games, the Neptunia games
PS4: Sonic Forces, Sonic Mania, NeiR Automata, Dragon Ball Xenoverse, the more recent Neptunia games, Street Fighter V and some other fighting games I've wanted to try
Really Wii U + PS4 sounds like the best option, I can live without playing Mario Odessy, and I'd be able to get the bulk of the games I want. Going with PS3 + Switch would give me the Sonic games I want and could be cheaper than plan A given how little a PS3 costs. I'm really stumped on this...
A lot of these games are available on PC, but I'd almost certainly have to upgrade my rinkydink laptop to be able play anything, and I'm not sure how that will shake out financially.

Sonic Generations can run just fine on lower tier laptops, unless yours is like a $500 one meant solely for web browsing/documents. It'll also be much cheaper on Steam.
I'd say go for the Wii U PS4 combo. Switch just came out and has pretty much no breadth to its game catalogue and won't for at least a year, and the PS4 has been out long enough to warrant being a buy over the PS3.

mine has severe frame drops near moving water and a few other things that also disrupt cutscene timings

also also pc games are a painful experience i would not recommend to anyone to go out of their way to witness if they don't already have the equipment
just sayin'

Re: Which one shoud I get?
Yeah, my laptop cost less than $500 and couldn't handle running Sonic Worlds. I'm not putting a real video game in that thing.
I feel like this would be an easier decision if either of the systems were backwards compatible with their predecessors.
If I knew for sure the PS3 games I wanted would be ported to the PS4, I'd be sold on that system. As it is I am leaning more towards the PS4.

Re: Which one shoud I get?
Firstly, there's a difference between low-tier and "chromebook" laptops that pretty much don't have graphics cards. My $800 2008 laptop that couldn't even run TF2 could run Sonic Generations just fine. Unless you're using a Macbook from 10 years ago, Sonic Generations isn't that taxing.chaoadventures wrote:that's not trueRajikaru wrote:Sonic Generations can run just fine on lower tier laptops

Second, PC games aren't a painful experience at all. Look up a guide or two on gaming PCs and use PC Part Picker unless you want to just buy a pre-made rig and you'll be fine.
Like I said, just stick to the Ps4 Wii U combo.

Re: Which one shoud I get?
My PS3 controller, quite literally, disconnects completely from my computer every time I disconnect it, forcing me to reinstall everything. Actually if I restart my computer and don't take it out,
it also needs to reinstall. Which makes me restart my computer. Again.
My GameCube controller, with the exception of Dolphin, also disconnects completely from my computer every time I disconnect it, forcing me to reinstall everything.
Sometimes it doesn't even work after I do that.
...
It's been like that for months, along with the fact the C-Stick didn't work in normal games, so I gave up even though it's genuinely my favorite controller.
Heck, my Wacom Tablet requires me to restart my computer every time I take it out.
FURTHER MORE, games such as Sonic Generations, have also been known for suddenly cease to work, making me you guessed it, reinstall them.
ALSO, games are also overall buggier because of a lack of perfection on all different types of systems causing random crap like:
and
I really wouldn't advise anyone to get a PC unless it was for something you could bet on working more often and with the games as a side-effect like mine.
Re: Which one shoud I get?
Lmao, those are all problems with your laptop specifically. None of those problems happen on other computers.

...They're not. Those controller problems happen on every other computer I've used, laptop or desktop, random game crashes included.
Re: Which one shoud I get?
Then look into it. I've literally never had any of those problems happen, I've used 4 different computers in the past 7 years.

Sonic Generations for PC is honestly one of the most frustrating games I've ever had to set up for PC. When it worked, it worked great, but until then it was such a pain in the ass. SEGA PC ports in general have always been terribly frustrating and annoying as all hell.
But yeah after seeing that list of games, I would definitely go for the PS4 and Wii U.

ummm okay let's for a second realize i'm a goddess and perfect and i break boys' beds like i break my nails. look, sugar, you don't need these guys (well Nano was helpful), you need me
you know i'm the kinda girl that tells it like it is... the Switch is straight up junk, Nintendo doesn't know what they're doing, durability sucks major ass, and you can play a bunch of games nobody cares about except tasteless dorks for a steep price. also zelda virtually looks the same on Wii U. there's enough games for the price, so i guess grab the thing.
don't bother with a PS3. there's a handful of good games on it yeah, but if you're a fan of japanese stuff, the PS4 is getting more localization and titles you wouldn't normally see localized than the 3 ever did, even the kinkier ones lol and unlike nintendo, you don't wait 900 months between games. also the ps4 has definitely seen more physical versions of digital games than ps4 got, if you're that type... but i like digital so i can tell you that digital games on ps3 are worthless and so are the stone age digital ps1/2 titles. ps4 at 250-300 isn't gonna get cheaper and it's a better future investment, because it's not like nintendo or microsoft will actually produce the volume of games sony will, let's be real
;0 kk bye

The Wii U + PS4 plan got the most votes, so I'll say that's what I'll commit to.
Now there's nothing left to do but make a Timmy's Dad meme about where I would put my copy of Sonic Generations (if I had one).

The only thing I'd want from the ps4 is kingdom hearts 2.8 and 3. But its really up to the type of games you play, like I usually stand clear from big action online multiplayer games so I usually go with nintendo.
My playstation 3 still serves me faithfully though and currently replaying all my kingdom hearts games on it :D.

Re: Which one shoud I get?
Personally, I'd have to agree with "PC gaming is a crapshoot", especially if you're trying to play games from multiple eras on the same machine using a single OS and version. Buying all top of the line or just below top components might give you the raw power to run anything currently available or in development, but it doesn't guarantee compatibility with all games and can set you back quite a lot. Older games often need hacks to run at all on newer versions of windows, and even games that run unmodified sometimes misbehave on newer hardware because of exploiting some quirk in the hardware they were originally made for or just run unplayably fast because the devs didn't take increasing processor speeds into account. There are third party drivers for pretty much every controller that can do USB or Bluetooth, but excluding things like generic mice, keyboards, and USB gamepads, how well an input device will work is up in the air, especially if it was meant to be used with something other than a PC. And that's not getting into the usual hassles of dealing with Windows or running Windows software on other OSes(Games without a Linux port are notoriously hard to get running stably under Wine and other compatibility layers).
Granted, if you're up to the task of troubleshooting every issue that arises, PC completely dwarfs everything else in terms of sheer library, the PC version of a game is often the best and cheapest version, and PC is where the vast majority of game hacking takes place. Still, consoles stick around because not everyone who plays games wants all that hassle, they're relatively cheap while having some guarantee that they'll be able to play new games that will be coming out for a few years, and when you buy a game, you can be fairly sure it'll run properly, and if it doesn't it's because the devs screwed up and not because your system is crap.
