Not at all. They're both smash games, they both have very slim viable character rosters and balancing that's pure garbage for 1 on 1 (because it's a party game), and were designed to be party games first (Masahiro Sakurai himself has said that he regrets targeting the competitive game crowd with Melee). The only difference is the mechanics, speed, and viable characters of the two games, which changes the skill floor and skill ceiling, but they still play the exact same, still have very similar character interactions, and are just variations of the same formula. It's going to take a lot less time to learn Melee if you've been playing Sm4sh competitively, and vice versa. Really, this is like saying SFII and SFIV are COMPLETELY AND UNDENIABLY different games. Technically? Yes, they are, but they're still different iterations on the same basic game design, one of which is designed to be much more casual friendly, the other mechanically intense but still the same basic gameplay.

EvilPinkamina wrote: I think the main problem here is just you suck at smash.
Whether this is true or not doesn't really matter, it's not an argument for anything and doesn't prove me right or wrong. It doesn't take a master chef to know when a meal is awful.

I also never said competitive Sm4sh or Melee isn't fun. It is. I wouldn't have gone to 3 separate tourneys, 2 of which were regionals, and spent $100+ for what amounted to 8 hours of driving and 4 hours of playing if it wasn't fun. But I digress. Sm4sh is fun to watch and play, Melee is fun to to play and watch, and as long as there's an audience for both games, they'll both still be played on the big stages and streamed and streamlined until they've been perfected down to the frame. But, I guarantee you, just like SFII wasn't created with the idea to make the perfect 1 on 1 competitive video game in mind, neither Melee Nor Sm4sh were designed with the idea to have 2 competitive 1 on 1 fighting games in mind, Sm4sh especially.

yeah i just meant like licensed anime stuff because i'd always get hyped and it's always just okay; i liked skullgirls a lot, i don't care if there's anime influence otherwise i couldn't play any fighter. i don't play them competitively though, my disease basically killed any game that requires stamina and motor skills so i'm not gonna front

also triert you have to hear this:

"Ubisoft has revealed an $800 collector's edition of Assassin's Creed Origins.

Dubbed the Dawn of the Creed Legendary Edition, this premium bundle includes a copy of the Gold Steelbook Edition of the game, a 28.7" statue of the protagonist Bayek, a World Map and four Lithographs, as well as the game's soundtrack and Season Pass. An art book, art cards and Bayek's eagle amulet are included as well." this after devolver's skit is perfect

Well I mean, I can understand Melee having a slim viable character roster, having only 12 characters out of 26 represented on the most recent top 50. Smash 4 however has plenty of viable characters though. Hell, just this weekend we saw Diddy, Bayonetta, Cloud, Marth, Zero Suit Samus, Meta Knight, Mewtwo, Mario, Sonic, and Luigi in top 8 of Nairo Saga, and as you go further back, that number only increases. We saw Peach, Rosalina, Megaman and Sheik counting up to top 9, Duck Hunt, Ness, and Game and Watch up to 13, and so on and so on. Generally in smash 4, you can play most characters and expect to do well if you are better than your opponents. Not to mention it was patched to be competitive by reintroducing DI as oppose to the vectoring system smash 4 originally shipped with, and Sakurai himself even visited tournaments and balanced the game on what he saw.

"The only difference is the actual core gameplay loop" You're not wrong, that'd kinda why they're two different games

If they had similar character interactions, there wouldn't be diehard melee fans. The way you play the neutral game is fundementally different with both games due to the mechanical differences that you conceded earlier. You're going to have a base understanding how to play the game if you're familiar with the core focus yeah, but that's about where the similarities end.

Sony has enough money to make an indoor waterfall, but apparently they lack the funds to completely plug in their aux cables.

While I've never been that serious a fighting game player, aren't many of the complaints in this thread things that have plagued the genre at least since the original Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter II hit arcades roughly a quarter of a century ago? Granted, I can understand how the way many modern developers focus on online multiplayer to the detriment of local multiplayer and single player modes can make the genre's long standing flaws all the more glaring. As demotivating as having one friend in your neighborhood who can wipe the floor with you in local multiplayer without trying can be, I can imagine it being nothing compared to crap match making algorithms putting you against an endless string of strangers who could wipe the floor with that one friend, especially if the devs didn't bother providing anything resembling halfway decent training against the computer.

Granted, game balance is a problem older than video games, devs focusing on online to the detriment of 1P and local 2+P modes isn't limited to fighters, and match making is a problem in pretty much any online game that allows anonymous match ups.

Nintendo's conference could literally just have been the Metroid Prime 4 teaser and the Pokemon designer saying "We're working on a Pokemon game for the Switch", without anything else that was aired, and they still would have been best in show.

The lack of them saying what kind of game this is instills fear in me, I'm hoping we're getting another entry in the colosseum series (because now that Prime 4 is confirmed, nothing is out of the question.) Or, as much of a stretch it is the switch will be getting the diamond/pearl remakes itself.

All said and done, Nintendo wins E3 this year, Microsoft comes second, and sony is somewhere at 5th or 7th. All in all, this was very good to come home to.

90% sure Nintendo was in the middle of making Samus Returns and then they saw AM2R come out and then couldn't do anything but scream extremely loudly at it.

I forgot I started playing AM2R, so I'll probably just pick it back up after I play Samus Returns.
