Yo, I made some N64-inspired Smash Icon sprites.

Hey, so since a lot of talented artists here are showing off their wares, I'd figure "Oh, i'm not that great at drawing and haven't done any draws in a long time, but I do have something else!"

So, you know the little icon sprites in the Super Smash Bros. game series? They look like so:

Image

(the little heads below the pictures of Mario or Bowser)

yeah, I've always liked them for some odd reason. Never could really put my finger on why. But I digress.

In the original Super Smash Bros for the N64, because of the hardware, the icons were incredibly small - not even 20x20 pixels. For example, Mario's icon sprite can be found in the first picture.

Anyways, I was inspired by those sprites, because they had very weird restrictions on sizes. I think the sprite size was something like 8x12, though I can't remember exactly, so I went "what if I re-did them, included modern characters and their alts, and gave them sensible restrictions, like 10x10?"

And thus, I set to work.

So, here are some examples of the stock icons I've done so far. As an aside, I haven't updated any of these sprites since my first year of college started back last september, and I switched to a different system entirely, so the R.O.B., Luigi, Mario, Lucas, and Roy sheets are out of date (due to Project M patches and Sm4sh DLC respectively). I also am not currently able to work on them, as much as I want to, because I have yet to find a program that works as well as Paint XP did for me. If anybody has any good programs that can be used as a substitute for pixel-level work on Paint XP, please let me know!

Fun fact: I've always taken palettes directly from artwork of the specific character or alt. palette, as I don't actually have any experience with official colour palettes for situations like this. A

First, the sheets that I'm most proud of.

Luigi, Falcon, and Meta Knight look pretty good!

Could you do a Dr. Eggman icon? :0

By requests, I probably should have specified I meant the next Smash characters I should do, but what the hell, I did you an Eggman.

Pretty god damn hard, especially on a trackpad, but I'm okay with how it turned out.

What if people start asking for this kind of stuff with CI OC's?

I'll probably say no unless it's somebody with an easily distinguishable OC like yourself or Chocolate_Chao, since 10x10 pixels is really hard to work with, especially with just straight up human dudes/girls. Also I wouldn't really see a point since these things are TINY and probably not going to find their way anywhere, whereas I've actually been offered to work on a Project M mod involving using these Smash-based spritesheets as stock sprites before.

I'm a self admitted narcissist that would enjoy one of myself for the sole sake of having it in my external hard drive if that means anything
