I have main character tendencies.

I see two chices when making RPs; Completely make up a well-thought RP with well considered storyline and new scenarios, and having your RP die or have one or two members OR get half of the idea from a popular genre (ie. pokemon, sonic) with simple storyline and thrown-together new characters, and have many members and pages of posts. The answer for those who want a long-lived RP is obvious.

My standards have gone through the roof and Jesus Christ these RPs are on the floor. The only reason we have active Role Plays is because they take a second of thought to post in and are being constantly posted on by two or three people. No character development is made, little story progression or too much story progression is made, simplistic ideas, barely any words per post, etc. It's a disgrace dammit.

^ Actually, I think you're wrong. I think as a general note a lot of these RPs are poor. But there are still a few good ones. I am all for participating in a great quality RP like you suggest. Perhaps you should make one?

The former is what is happening to my RP right now, and I even used a chao setting to try and blend it slightly with the "get half of the idea from a popular genre." But to no avail. All anybody wants here is one-liners with zero character development. Cool stuff.SonicBoom wrote:I see two chices when making RPs; Completely make up a well-thought RP with well considered storyline and new scenarios, and having your RP die or have one or two members OR get half of the idea from a popular genre (ie. pokemon, sonic) with simple storyline and thrown-together new characters, and have many members and pages of posts. This is essentially what every intelligible person here says.SkyGinge wrote:Yup, but it doesn't interest me enough to join it. Sorry.
You have the kids who are just starting their role-playing career, who play their flat characters and struggle to create posts longer than one or two lines; they may not be very good at role-playing yet but they have a very positive attitude and like to join and typically actually keep up with a multitude of role-plays.
Then you have the people here who are potentially very good role-players but will only join a role-play if they're indeed quite invested in it. So they're more dedicated, but on the other hand it's a whole heck of a lot harder to get them to join in on anything.
And thus, we have a very large number of mediocre-quality role-plays that are very successful aaaaand pretty much no high-quality RPs.
-----
(I'm running a good-quality [not super-intense Wall of China posts, think one or two paragraphs] role-play at the moment, me and Zphal will be playing it all out regardless of whether or not anyone joins. But on the off chance that anyone is interested, you can click the link in my signature.)

Re: Making a Quality RP (Tips and Hints)
I just thought this wonderful advice from a certain AtomicBat deserved a good home here.
Obviously he meant it only as advice as opposed to strict rules, but they look very helpful and if people were to start to go by at least some of this then perhaps we can tidy this place up a bit! :DDon't think too intently about making characters that seem original. Many people have a misunderstanding of what a mary-sue is. A character that has traits or powers resembling an existing character does not make your character a mary-sue. What makes a character a poor character is one that is completely developed before the role-play begins, in other words; a static character that danger poses no threat to or needs no development. As the leader of a role-play, it is your job to create events that will test characters and realistically get them to grow. Keep a close eye on your participants to make sure their characters are being dynamic. But don't breathe down their necks either. Bios should be short so that everyone has room to grow.
Also, you need to decide what sort of fun you'd like to have, because there are pros and cons to both freeform and structured role-playing.
Freeform:
Pros
-Everyone has an ability to influence the plot
-Setting is fluid, always new
-Attracts more participants
Cons
-The more people there are, the more difficult it is to be consistent
-More difficult to accommodate multiple timezones
Structured:
Pros
-Plot is controlled by the creator, thus everyone is focused on one event at a time.
-Setting is clear
-Easy to accommodate multiple time zones
Cons
-Attracts fewer participants
-Creator must use no or only one protagonist
-Other players cannot influence plot
Regardless, you should decide on a few plot milestones for everyone to work toward. Five is a good number. Decide on a posting order and stick to it. Turn-based is easier to keep track of for beginners. Keep a summary of what has happened so far in the OP so people can quickly read up on what is going on. Most importantly, don't try to make a philosophical plot. Keep it simple so you don't get caught in a complicated plot web.

Re: Making a Quality RP (Tips and Hints)
Examples of experience may help fix this. From what it sounds, the issue stems from the inexperienced wadding in nothing but their posts and the posts of those just as horrible. Meanwhile, the people with actual experience are nowhere to be seen, and definitely not where the less experienced are. I was once an inexperienced "kid", as I bet many of the experienced were at one point. I became how I am now simply by wanting to join an RP of higher experience. Than I started posting more, and refined it.quartzlcc wrote: This is essentially what every intelligible person here says.

Not sure exactly how to word it,(Besides, people will probably ignore "The new guy") but if there were people showing their abilities often around here, there would be inexperienced kids looking at that and learning from it. Eventually, they become experienced. The cycle repeats, and you've got more people becoming better at this.
I'm a different kind of amazing. The type that isn't really that amazing.

HOW TO CREATE AN AWESOME RP... go to the Link's below
RPGchat Beginner rules of RP
RPGchat Fantasy rules
RPGchat Futuristic/modern RP rules.
RPGchat Freestyle RP rules
if you want a place to go to enjoy some real quality RP's then RPGchat is the place to go... They've also got Fan based RP's (rules) that can be enjoyed.
so yeah for those who want to join in some RPs that have good quality posts, cause RPGchat members are bad against posts that are less than three lines of text. They are also bad against lack of story progression. They accept but are not big fans of instantaneous time jumps. I.E. one day your getting onto a space craft heading for a distant planet. Next post... Three years passed and the people disembarked from the ship... They will accept this but would rather have something going on in that three year span...
Honestly I have had many complaints towards the RPs that I've joined and well... all I can say is .. DUST many of the posts are DUST... no real content, lack of progressing the story further, way too much going on at once, I.E. Char A is in dimension X while team 3 is in Dimension D. All while Chars 5,8,and 10 are in world 5 of dimension A... that is just too many places at once (is looking at the Aurora Drive RP)... not to mention many posts have a HUGE lack of multiple actions and details....
you CAN go into detail as to the current surroundings of the area... even when it's a boss fight you could get knocked to the ground.... let me play this out for ya with familiar characters (to me at least)
Link got knocked to the ground by Plantera (Terraria reference) but before the creature could crush him with it's thorn covered vines he quickly rolled backwards and to his feet. Upon gaining his footing once more he looked around the jungle temple he was in. The walls were stone covered with moss and vines, there were some plants here and there but so far nothing of use, at least that is until Plantera flung one of it's grapple vines at the ceiling. The stone fell away but what was revealed was a plat form high above. Upon seeing that he began looking around for a way to reach it. As he did so he maintained a safe distance from the giant flower like monster by hitting it with his Fire Arrows.
... there we go... there is an example (well my example) of how you can get multiple things done at once and throw something of your own into an RP... yeah I know many RP makers are sticklers or otherwise about their RP but still that shouldn't stunt your creative minds from coming up with something like the above bold.
