I can help~
First off, you have to make a plot. Any plot is good, and it doesn't have to be great for your first rp. It's your first rp, right? X3

Re: Trying to make my own RP (not an RP)
Hello, I used to frequently RP a lot on an old site (right now I still do but its in a game, not a forum.) One of the most important things is an original, well-written plot that will spark people's interest.
Here is some things you should avoid for your first RP:
1. School RPs, they are extremely overdone.
2. RPs that require complicated processes (IE: A shop or leveling system.)
3. lenient rules, strict rules can help compensate for the somewhat poor quality that your first RP will most likely be as it helps boost quality control in general.
4. Don't get ambitious, you will want to save your best ideas for later, who knows, maybe they will turn out to be bad ideas instead later on.
5. Avoid RPs related to games, they are less likely to get people willing to join as not everyone will know the lore of that game.
PM me if you want more help in designing it.

Great to know, Doctorx2, but Rule 5 makes almost no sense here on Chao Island.

Re: Trying to make my own RP (not an RP)
Um, I'm an avid roleplayer so I can tell you this: Make sure everything IC stays IC and everything OOC stays OOC. Or else, you'll run into plenty of problems. Talk a lot with your fellow roleplayers to come up with great ideas! It helps to plan ahead and work together to create a wonderful story! Strict rules are a yes! Don't try and put in filler content. You want a driving, continuous plot. Also, freeform is best. Some people enjoy being concise, while others love detail. However, there should be a pattern of posts, so if there are short posts, keep it that way, but add a bit more detail each post you make if you want to increase the amount of detail overall. If you want less, decrease it little by little.
Try to avoid drama, and allow people to enjoy the roleplay. Try and make sure the group gets along. You are the leader, you need to make sure there is teamwork.
In my opinion, quality is determined by how much fun people have. You can say that the more there is written, it's more fun, and that if there's less writing and quickly paced action, it's fun, but remember it's only an opinion! Everyone is different, and they all have their own preferences, so you should try and meet up with the majority's preferences, as well as your own. Although, it's good to make it personally entertaining for everyone; it can be hard and stressful, but it's what results in some genuine fun.
It can be light hearted too. It shouldn't require that much effort.
But you do have to push when things go awry. This is your personal creation. It is your beautiful, wonderful baby. Take good care of it, however you choose.
Your roleplay is a story, a world created by YOU.
Have fun with it, wherever it takes you.
Also, don't forget to credit the other roleplayers! They are the other people who are supposed to enjoy the roleplay and help make it something fantastic! And if they do, give them a round of applause!
Kick out all the bad seeds until they redeem themselves. If they aren't contributing, or if all their doing is detrimental, they are not worth keeping in the roleplay.
While allowing a freeform roleplay to match everyone's preference, do your best to enforce that everything is coherent and flowing. Flow is important. If it's too complicated, it will just be confusing and not fun.
I don't care if it's deep stuff; I just want to make this first RP for you as fun as possible.
I know this seems like a lot, but you have the ability to do it. Every roleplayer shows promise. And as you roleplay, you'll see that most of the stuff involving this will hardly take any effort at all.
After all, your fellow roleplayers are your close friends who you are supposed to get along with in the first place. They won't want to cause you any trouble, and if they do, and are a true friend, they'll make up for it.
Also, drama IC is good for character development, and it should abide to the plot, however. Complexity is a good thing sometimes when you want to do something really unique and cool, as long as you can handle it.
Don't go outside your boundaries, unless if you want to take a good risk.
But anyway, most of this is just common sense. Sorry if it's redundant.

Re: Trying to make my own RP (not an RP)
Don't think too intently about making characters that seem original. Many people have a misunderstanding of what a mary-sue is. A character that has traits or powers resembling an existing character does not make your character a mary-sue. What makes a character a poor character is one that is completely developed before the role-play begins, in other words; a static character that danger poses no threat to or needs no development. As the leader of a role-play, it is your job to create events that will test characters and realistically get them to grow. Keep a close eye on your participants to make sure their characters are being dynamic. But don't breathe down their necks either. Bios should be short so that everyone has room to grow.
Also, you need to decide what sort of fun you'd like to have, because there are pros and cons to both freeform and structured role-playing.
Freeform:
Pros
-Everyone has an ability to influence the plot
-Setting is fluid, always new
-Attracts more participants
Cons
-The more people there are, the more difficult it is to be consistent
-More difficult to accommodate multiple timezones
Structured:
Pros
-Plot is controlled by the creator, thus everyone is focused on one event at a time.
-Setting is clear
-Easy to accommodate multiple time zones
Cons
-Attracts fewer participants
-Creator must use no or only one protagonist
-Other players cannot influence plot
Regardless, you should decide on a few plot milestones for everyone to work toward. Five is a good number. Decide on a posting order and stick to it. Turn-based is easier to keep track of for beginners. Keep a summary of what has happened so far in the OP so people can quickly read up on what is going on. Most importantly, don't try to make a philosophical plot. Keep it simple so you don't get caught in a complicated plot web.

Trying to make my own RP Phase II (not an RP still)
Okay, so basically I got a bunch of users giving me some tips to help me out and such.
So, I'm going to make a Chao RP (since that's the only thing that actually sparks my interest).
Now, I'm confronted with a problem. What should the RP's plot be about?
I'll grab the first 6 suggestions and throw them into a pool poll, so that I can decide what makes a hit with the RP community.
(Mamkute, here to deliver the forum from all that is evil!)

Re: Trying to make my own RP (Phase II, still not an RP)
Well since its just simply a Chao RP there can probably be a wide spectrum of things it could be about? What would help is what you want the genre of the RP to be. Horror? Action? Drama? Adventure? Romance(Plz no)? Etc.
Also, if you have no idea what the RP should be about, maybe it isnt the best time to be thinking about making one. Its not really making your own RP if we tell you what it should be about.

Okay, I'm thinking adventure. Every adventure RP is obviously good.

Re: Trying to make my own RP (Phase II, still not an RP)
Adventure can be pretty good, but it really needs to focus on the setting and character development to be solid from my experience, so a structured RP would work best. And no offense to anyone but Ive been looking through the RPs, and there is a ton of Mary Sues on here so keep an eye out and make sure you pick the good ones out of the bunch.

Attracting fewer participants is no problem for some people, but if you like many participants it would be a con. I prefer structured myself. Also, I'm not sure how that would apply to me at all.
