Is it strange that

Post by Crash32 »

Whenever someone has an avi or sig made in MS paint I think of them as like 9 years old. That or a really noobish person.

Anyone else think so?

No. I see them as someone who doesn't know how to use more advanced image editors, as that is about 98% of the population...

I have no picture sig! How old does that make me? (Genuinely curious :)

MS paint itself doesn't make me think someone is rather young. Before I got photo shop I used it to color pictures I scanned and they looked decent. If an image is- for lack of a better term- poorly drawn, I usually view them as younger because I connect the image style to how I drew pictures when I was younger.

Either that or they're just really lazy and slap together a cheap custom avatar/signature really fast. :P

In fact, my avatar was made in MS Paint. I recolored a Chocobo years ago and just put the image there for giggles. Never really thought to put any other type of avatar there... I rarely ever put images in my signature. Mainly because most forums I go to will cut off the image half way through if its too big so I don't want to bother with resizing it.
Darn kids and their boost mode. In my day we had Spin Dash for speed AND WE LIKED IT.

MS Paint is not a bad art program per se. It just lacks any fancy tools that allow people to pretend they have more talent/skill at digital art than they do.

^That really, which is why you shouldn't judge a person based on the art program they use.

It's both rude and silly.

MSPaint can look great if you know what you're doing! Unfortunately I don't know what I'm doing.

Normal.

That is probably one of the reasons why I do.

If you produced that entirely in MS Paint, I would say your digital art skills probably exceed 99% of humanity. May not be the best, but most people would have trouble making decent stick figures.

Well, being at the 1-in-100 level arguably is not that impressive. After all, 1% of humanity is roughly 70 million. The true greats are more like the 1-in-a-million level.

Still that drawing is better than the vast majority of ametaur art.

Before I moved everything over to this computer, I doodled stuff in MS Paint occasionally. Mostly dragons. Of course, they weren't that great, but anyway.
I would say that most people would guess a person's age based on their artistic ability if the person who drew it considers themselves an artist, but doing that would also be, uh, wrong, or something, I guess? Like maturity ≠ age and "artistic ability" ≠ age, art program used ≠ age.

MS Paint art just subconsciously reminds me of a child's artwork. Those squiggly lines and garish colors definitely look like they're drawn by somebody too young to understand what they're doing.

That has more to do with the person's ability, or lack thereof, than it does with the program itself. MS Paint offers image control down to individual pixels and supports all 16,777,216 colors of the 24-bit RGB color space.

To make an few analogies to traditional art media:
MS Paint is to a painter with a single brush and only tubes of Red, Yellow, and Blue paint as Photoshop is to a painter with dozens of brushes and hundreds of premixed colors.
MS Paint is to a pencil drawer with a single HB(Equivalent to US #2) pencil as Photoshop is to a pencil drawer with every pencil grade from 10H to 9B.
With enough skill, the painter or drawer using the minimal tools can produce anything the painter or drawer with the more complete toolbox.

Quoted for Truth. Also, I think this is an appropriate time to throw out one of my favorite sayings:

Age is just a meaningless number.

I've made these on MS Paint o3o
I think with enough practice someone can become skilled at MS Paint. When I first joined this site, my drawings were something like this.
As you can see, I've become better.

No skill with paint or any other editing program (please ignore that my resume says otherwise). No artistic creative drive to motivate me into getting any skill.
