i'm thinking of changing my username pretty much everywhere from the archaic and unprofessional "eboyblue3" to something a little more streamlined. after a bit of deliberation (and help from a certain other cool dude) i came up with "eblu"
what i'm asking is does this work? i don't want to flaunt a new name that'll alienate people who already know me

The only person that would be concerned with this would be Fox Boy or another admin, and they accepted my name change which was to a name that had literally no relation or connection whatsoever to my previous username, so I doubt they would have a problem with your desired name change.

Will everyone still know who you are? Yes. Especially as long as you keep that avatar or something pretty close for the next month or so.

"does this name sound good"? Ehhhhh... Not so much. Seems TOO streamlined, personally. Like a rad short version of your username that you'd offer people to use instead.
Whether or not it would work in that context is another subject with it's own Excel spreadsheet. Again, this is just me, and could be a case of "old man memories", even if I lack said old man quality.

this isn't really about the username changes but that's beside the point

i wanted to get opinions from different people so i know if i should follow through on this since i've never changed my online identity this radically before. so far the opinions here are 50-50 so i don't know what to say

Your online identity isn't just your name. Unless you only go on here (which would be weird), people know you for more than just your name. Your attitude, mannerisms, interests, and appearance (avatar, typing style, signature) will all come across no matter what.

People here still call me by my old username, and my IRL friends will know it's me just from the way I talk, even if I try my hardest to pretend to be somebody else.

The majority of people that have posted in the thread have approved of or complimented the change in some way. the only person that could possibly be against it in any form is Fox Boy, and that'd only be if the name change is too crazy that Mooncow would get mad, which probably won't be the case.

Given the similarity between current screen name and the proposed replacement, I might actually connect you to your old posts if the change is approved.

That said, I only know Nano use to be Fox Boy because of his rank, I only know Lamby use to be Batty because she's mentioned the fact several times, and I have no idea who Rajikaru use to be and wouldn't even know they had a previous username if not for the statement in this thread mentioning it.

Granted, I have practically no experience with name changes as I've been using the Jeffery Mewtamer moniker online almost everywhere for the last fifteen years or so, and the exceptions are mainly places where I just use Mewtamer to avoid underscores, where my screen name is my full real name, or where my username is handed down by an institution instead of being chosen by me(for example, the University I graduated from uses first initial, middle initial, last name to generate usernames and digits to distinguish duplicates).
