Anime Canon Game 1.1

Post by retrolinkx »

Alright, now hear me out here....no...don't close the page!

Taking Batty's old topic for vidya. Which was called "Games Canon Game" and was about creating a top 10 for video games one at a time by removing or moving up/down a certain game, let's do that but instead for anime.

Stealing everything Batty said in the old topic, here are the rules.
Spoiler:
1. We’ll start with the list that you'll find below. Reply here with an affirmative message (eg. “I hate weeaboos but put me in anyhow”) and I’ll add your name to the queue. We’ll start when I’ve received 10 people minimum. honestly even in 2013 i never got 10 people, and once i even gave like 6 people two moves each, but it works best with 10+ otherwise people make it their favourite monogatari show or someone literally gives you Cory in the House. if i don't get at least 10, then i may change it into a top whatever

2. On your turn, you can make one of two moves: either swap the listed positions of any two animes on the list, or remove an anime and replace it with a new anime in the same spot.
  • -You may not remove an anime from one position and put another anime in at a different position; if you take out #7, you have to put the new one in at #7.
-You may not skip your turn.
-You will not be told what moves have led us to the point we’re at.(For this reason, I would ask any other players not to discuss their moves publicly, as well.)
-You must add an explanation of your move, which I will publicize upon presenting the completed list. Try to use some discretion and objective reasoning, though. Your reasoning should be developed. Tell why it deserves the spot you placed it in. You should consider how your choice impacted anime or other animes or evaluate the anime's good points if nothing else. "I have never heard of this ganime" or silly responses will not be accepted unless they're followed by or preceded by an actual explanation.
-If I don’t hear back from you in a reasonable amount of time (2 or 3 days), I reserve the right to skip you and move on to the next player, unless you know you'll be away..

3. Once the previous player’s move has been made, I’ll send the updated list to the next random player. Repeat until complete.

4. When the game ends, I will write up a play by play of each round and post the final list, which will then be able to be discussed. and i'm giving permission to people to laugh at or criticize your taste so don't be all huffy if you remove something to put One Outs because you thought you'd stick it to anime you've never watched because you have some hangup about bad anime. even if your library is limited to your opinions, at least show everyone you have an argument about the anime itself if you're called out. i mean don't be mean ofc, but this isn't just a game it's a way to frame a discussion about what CHAO ISLAND as a whole and what you all think about what constitutes the best anime. at the same time let's not take it too seriously.
Since the list Batty used in the other thread was about games, and I don't really want to add 10 good animes onto the list only to see them replaced with trash with other anime I haven't seen, I'll just take the top ten from Myanimelist and place that on here. Actually, scratch that it's all Gintama. Instead I'll just google top ten anime list and go from there

1. Code Geass
2. Cowboy Bebop
3. DragonBall Z
4. Gurren Lagann
5. Neon Genesis Evangelion
6. Madoka Magica
7. Pyscho Pass

Post if you want to participate by the by. I think I'll give it a shot myself to add another number on here. Don't worry though, to make it fair I'll go first. Don't feel obliged to keep something I put in there just because you're sending the change to me by the way,

If we don't get 10 peeps, what we can do is just double everyone's turns and add a rule to say that they can't touch something that was changed on theirs.

So for example, lets say it went Me, Ivo then me again. I changed Code Geass to Kaiji

Retro's move.
Spoiler:
1. Code Geass
2. Cowboy Bebop
3. DragonBall Z
4. Gurren Lagann
5. Neon Genesis Evangelion
6. Madoka Magica
7. Pyscho Pass
8. Samurai Champloo
9. Angel Beats
10. Black Lagoon

1. Kaiji
2. Cowboy Bebop
3. DragonBall Z
4. Gurren Lagann
5. Neon Genesis Evangelion
6. Madoka Magica
7. Pyscho Pass
8. Samurai Champloo
9. Angel Beats
10. Black Lagoon
Then Ivo changed Kaiji to Cardcaptor Sakura.

Ivo's Move:
Spoiler:
1. Kaiji
2. Cowboy Bebop
3. DragonBall Z
4. Gurren Lagann
5. Neon Genesis Evangelion
6. Madoka Magica
7. Pyscho Pass
8. Samurai Champloo
9. Angel Beats
10. Black Lagoon

1. Cardcaptor Sakura
2. Cowboy Bebop
3. DragonBall Z
4. Gurren Lagann
5. Neon Genesis Evangelion
6. Madoka Magica
7. Pyscho Pass
8. Samurai Champloo
9. Angel Beats
10. Black Lagoon
Then my move would me that I CAN'T change back Cardcaptor Sakura to anything else just to spite whoever changed it back in the first place. This would work the same for moving list items as well.

By doing this we 12 things could happen to this list, instead of 10. It's a decent number.

Vaporwave:
Spoiler:
1. Code Geass
2. Cowboy Bebop
3. DragonBall Z
4. Gurren Lagann
5. Neon Genesis Evangelion
6. Madoka Magica
7. Kaiba
8. Samurai Champloo
9. Angel Beats
10. Black Lagoon

I feel that a particularly artsy anime deserves to be on the list. Nothing against Psycho Pass in particular, but it was the highest that I felt was appropriate enough to replace 'Kaiba' with.
Fair play, although I asked for a few sentences.

Triert:
Spoiler:
1. DragonBall Z
2. Cowboy Bebop
3. Code Geass
4. Gurren Lagann
5. Neon Genesis Evangelion
6. Madoka Magica
7. Kaiba
8. Samurai Champloo
9. Angel Beats
10. Black Lagoon

Dragonball Z get's swapped to number 1 because frankly I don't like Code Geass as much as anything else here, to avoid being too harsh it feels like the kind of anime's we have today and not in a good way. I like it, but compared to everything here I feel it should be in a lower position because it isn't bad but not as good as others here. I also don't know what to replace it with at a number one spot but with that said I'm far more familiar with Dragonball Z than I am anything else here except for Evangelion, but I'm hoping someone else changes Evangelion's placement.
Going with the most generic placement, good job!

Nano:
Spoiler:
1. DragonBall Z
2. Cowboy Bebop
3. Code Geass
4. Gurren Lagann
5. Neon Genesis Evangelion
6. Madoka Magica
7. Kaiba
8. Samurai Champloo
9. Angel Beats
10. Nichijou

I removed Black Lagoon, which I feel bad about because I think it's probably really good, but Nichijou is perhaps one of the most entertaining and sweet stories of all time. It's not incredibly deep like Code Geass or NGE, and it's not dark like Madoka Magica, but I think that's the best part about it. It's a pure story that has comedy, romance, great art, a kickin OP, and in general is just a beautiful work. It even has a bunch of albums made for it, ranging from electronic remixes to smooth jazz covers featuring all the VAs singing. I understand it's not for everyone though, as not everyone thinks romcoms deserve a place anywhere on top 10 lists, so I placed it at number 10.
I don't like your choice, but I respect your wrong opinion.

Ivo:
Spoiler:
1. DragonBall Z
2. Cowboy Bebop
3. Code Geass
4. Aim for the Top! Gunbuster
5. Neon Genesis Evangelion
6. Madoka Magica
7. Kaiba
8. Samurai Champloo
9. Angel Beats
10. Nichijou

Now, don't get me wrong, I like Gurren Lagann. But Hideki Anno's 1988 Gunbuster, the first instalment in the TengenToppa saga, remains to this day the superior work. Gunbuster, its sequel Diebuster, and Diebuster's spiritual successor Gurren Lagann all feature similar themes of sacrifice and dealing with the pain of unavoidable loss. In fact the three anime almost have the same plot- I don't want to spoil anyone's viewing experience by describing how- but a person who watched the three in order would quickly deduce where Gurren Lagann was going (luckily I watched TTGL first so I dodged this problem). Because they're so similar they're really easy to compare.
In terms of characters and story, both anime involve the protagonist bonding with an older sibling figure who teaches them to go beyond their limits, and they get caught up in a war of cosmic proportion where huge sacrifices are made to protect humanity. But Gunbuster tells its story in only six episodes, where as TTGL stretches the plot over 27 episodes. Most of TTGL was great, but some episodes were just filler, and the part of the show after the first time skip drags its feet getting to the real conflict. And while Gunbuster understandably devotes its focus to a small, core cast given how short it is, TTGL introduced a slew of different characters only to give the lion's share of screen time to the MC and a couple additional characters, leaving the rest sadly underdeveloped. This applies to the setting too: despite being more than four times as long, TTGL barely offers any details about the world it takes place in, making the Earth seem like little more than a backdrop for the characters to fight on. Gunbuster on the other hand presents an astonishing amount of detail about the setting's history, how the world has changed compared to ours, and how the technology works- and the exposition isn't wasted since the physics of space travel play an extremely important role in the plot.
Gunbuster and TTGL have similar themes like I mentioned before, but TTGL is waaaay unsubtle about it and is almost preachy with its philosophy. Gunbuster was more restrained and thought provoking. I also feel like TTGL was inconsistent with its "message". Gunbuster and Diebuster had a strong moral about ordinary people rising to overcome seemingly unwinnable situations through hard work and guts. In Diebuster one of the characters has the power to warp reality, even moving planets, and when she loses this ability she has a personal crisis, thinking she's useless without her powers. Then she learns that the hero who saved her world before (the MC of Gunbuster) was just an ordinary girl, she pulls herself together and jumps into the fight. Gurren Lagann, which was by the same creator, seems like a slap in the face to this story arc! In TTGL a lot of the same stuff about pushing yourself beyond your limits to do the impossible gets brought up again, but the whole Spiral Energy plot device (which is literally an exaggerated version of the powers from Diebuster) is used unironically to make the heroes become neigh invincible god-like superbeings. No, its not an instant win button, and Team Dai-Gurren actually does have to make tremendous personal sacrifices to save the day, but the fact that the characters would be helpless without Spiral Energy makes all their monologuing sound hypocritical.
Gunbuster also takes itself a little bit more seriously. The characters in Gunbuster face bigger concequences for their actions than those in TTGL- and that's saying something given that the stakes in TTGL were rediculously high. Both shows run on the idea that even victory comes at a great price. But the protagonist of Gunbuster ends up facing a far, far greater loss... and there are no do-overs or second chances. Gunbuster takes a really emotional turn that I feel was executed beautifully. TTGL is heavy on the heartbreaking twists too, and arguably it does this better because it has time to really dig into how the characters are effected by those events, but it still didn't give me the same intensity I got out of Gunbuster. The execution was just better in the original Toppa anime.
I could go on like this about different aspects of the two shows and how either side holds up but I'll cut it short. Imo Gunbuster is the best anime I've ever seen, up there with Cowboy Bebop. The ending moves me to tears. ANY list of great anime should include this classic.
Thank you for going above and beyond for this.

Sable:
Spoiler:
1. DragonBall Z
2. Cowboy Bebop
3. Madoka Magica
4. Aim for the Top! Gunbuster
5. Neon Genesis Evangelion
6. Code Geass
7. Kaiba
8. Samurai Champloo
9. Angel Beats
10. Nichijou

While Code Geass is definitely a classic I feel that Madoka does a lot more to play with its genre, creating a very transformative work in its own right. The art direction and cinematography are also stellar, the narrative is well paced and rife with symbolism, foreshadowing, and cinematic parallels, and the soundtrack is incredible. The only reason I wouldn't put it higher is because it would have a very hard time competing with how Dragonball Z and Cowboy Bebop shaped anime as a whole for years to come, especially in the west.
Madoka is really good, so it's nice to see it moved up.

retrolinkx:
Spoiler:
1. DragonBall Z
2. Cowboy Bebop
3. Madoka Magica
4. Aim for the Top! Gunbuster
5. Neon Genesis Evangelion
6. Code Geass
7. Kaiba
8. Samurai Champloo
9. Welcome to the NHK
10. Nichijou

Now don't get me wrong, Angel Beats was great but Welcome to the NHK was honestly one of the first anime's I watched where I really felt for Satou. All the things in his life I could related to in one way or another, and this was enforced by the fact that the music was able to give a perfect sense of loneliness and isolation that I still listen to the OST a lot these days.

Welcome to the NHK was such a good anime, that I'd probably say it's tied 1st. It gave off a perfect feeling of nothingness through it's music, it's plot and it's characters. It was the perfect way to show how a true NEET feels.
I lost my original reasoning, so I quickly wrote one up here.
Spoiler:
1. Flip Flappers
2. Cowboy Bebop
3. Madoka Magica
4. Aim for the Top! Gunbuster
5. Neon Genesis Evangelion
6. Code Geass
7. Kaiba
8. Samurai Champloo
9. Welcome to the NHK
10. Nichijou

Flip Flappers as an anime exists purely to tell a cute story that will **** with your head every step of the way. Everything you think is happening isn't happening and everything you aren't expecting to happen does. Not to mention the animation is on point every step of the way and has great references to other shows and movies. Comes off as a passion project more than a commercialized anime and is a 100% original anime, not based off of any prior media. Definitely tops the list over some frankly dated shows.
Hmm, alright. I mean I wouldn't put it straight to the number 1 spot for this anime, but whatever.

Triert:

4. Aim for the Top! Gunbuster
5. Flip Flappers
6. Code Geass
7. Kaiba
8. Samurai Champloo
9. Welcome to the NHK
10. Nichijou

I don't know the first thing about flip flappers but I'm going to throw it at this part of the list because if I had to pick anything I know and like from here very much it would be Evangelion.
*tips fedora*

Vaporwave:

1. Neon Genesis Evangelion
2. Cowboy Bebop
3. Madoka Magica
4. Aim for the Top! Gunbuster
5. FLCL
6. Code Geass
7. Kaiba
8. Samurai Champloo
9. Welcome to the NHK
10. Nichijou

FLCL is an anime that leaves an ever-lasting impression on you. You don't forget how you feel as you watched it, and it commands to be re-watched every so often. It's wacky, it's zaney, and maybe makes you think a little. It's funny, it's maybe a little sweet, and overall it's entertaining as hell to watch no matter how many times you've already re-watched it.
To me, FLCL and Flip Flappers felt similar.

Sable:
Spoiler:
1. Neon Genesis Evangelion
2. Cowboy Bebop
3. Madoka Magica
4. FLCL
5. Aim for the Top! Gunbuster
6. Code Geass
7. Kaiba
8. Samurai Champloo
9. Welcome to the NHK
10. Nichijou

FLCL is a total visual and atmospherical tour-de-force, and while perhaps the same could also be said about Gunbuster, it doesn't take itself to such surreal extremes
Can't say much here to be honest.

Nano:
Spoiler:
1. Neon Genesis Evangelion

4. FLCL
5. Welcome to the NHK
6. Code Geass
7. Kaiba
8. Samurai Champloo
9. Aim for the Top! Gunbuster
10. Nichijou

I've heard the NHK songs and I know what it's about. I think it deserves a high place on the list, even if I haven't watched it yet. After taking a peek at Aim for the Top I think NHK beats it.
An odd reason to put it up higher than anything else on the list, but I don't hate it.

8. Samurai Champloo
9. Welcome to the NHK
10. Nichijou

I find the Eva isn't as great as people say it is, but I don't feel like throwing it out and putting something questionable there would be the right choice, so I'd rather place something I think is better in a spot it deserves.

I shouldn't have to explain Bebop to anyone really, if you've seen it you know how great it is, and if you haven't I'm sure you can at least guess why I put it there. Personally I find Bebop to be very intersting and quite an "adult" anime to watch, sure it doesn't deal with difficult issues, but the stories it tells are really interesting and as time goes on you really get attached to the characters and their actions and stories.

I think it deserves the Number 1 spot on this list.
I would've put it lower, but I imagine someone would've just shot it back up again.

Ivo:
Spoiler:
Tch, Gunbuster was way better than anything on this list with the possible exception of Cowboy Bebop. Seeing it lower than Evangelion and Code Geass breaks my heart.

1. Cowboy Bebop
2. Neon Genesis Evangelion
3. Madoka Magica
4. FLCL
5. Welcome to the NHK
6. Code Geass
7. Kaiba
8. Kill la Kill
9. Aim for the Top! Gunbuster
10. Nichijou

At first I wanted to say Space☆Dandy but then we would have too many space anime on this list so I thought of Kill la Kill instead. Samurai Champloo attempts to do both comedy and a serious storyline at the same, but the comedic episodes are never terribly funny and while the serious character-driven episodes are excellent it takes forever to get to the meat of the story with so many filler episodes breaking things up (both Space☆Dandy and Cowboy Bebop are better in my opinion since they know what kind of show they want to be). Kill la Kill's tone is handled much more consistently; it's mostly a comedic series but the over-the-top nature of the story and the focus on action makes the more serious moments feel natural. The way Kill la Kill tries to be silly and serious at the same time works a lot better than Samurai Champloo's switching between stand-alone and arc based episodes. Kill la Kill's pacing is better too; it doesn't have any filler and each episode moves the plot forward. There's also way more action in Kill la Kill, and the fight scenes are animated gorgeously. While Samurai Champloo's action scenes are awesome when they happen, far too much time is spent touring random villages- for master swordsman Gene and Mugen don't get into that many duels. You could chalk that up to Samurai Champloo having higher priorities than getting the cast into a well choreographed fight every ten minutes, but what the characters get up to instead is sooo boring....
Both Kill la Kill and Samurai Champloo have legendary soundtracks, and although a lot of people would argue with me over it, I do prefer KLK's music by a pretty good margin. Season 2's opening is one of my favorite anime themes.
Honestly I think Samurai Champloo is a solid anime and can't fault anyone for loving it but there are other works I consider worthier of being on a top anime list. Kill la Kill is pretty high up there on my personal ranking of all the shows I've seen (though it's still not good enough to be above Gunbuster...) and I think others will acknowledge its merits.
Sorry dude, it happens. At least you gave me more to read this time around.

9. Aim for the Top! Gunbuster
10. Nichijou

Love, Chunibyo, and Other Delusions is def a high mark for super sweet and funny animes, and its got some really emotional scenes. Also if flip flappers ain't on this list than no magical girl show should be bc flip flappers is the peak >:I
Sorry my dude, but even I think Madoka > Flip Flappers.

Current List:
