Reminder: mini-Modding!

Post by Drouge »

Maybe it's the fact that a lot of people are joining, maybe it's Crazo's break but a lot of you have been Mini-Modding.

For those of you unfamiliar with the term, mini-Modding is when you try to enforce the rules yourself, rather than letting a Moderator handle it.

Mini-Modding isn't allowed for 2 simple reasons,
1) You aren't a Moderator
2) You may enforce the rules incorrectly.

Also, I've noticed a lot of people blatantly disregarding the rules regarding Spamming, Multi-posting and Topic placement.
Read the description of the forum you're placing a topic in before you do so! I've stopped leaving shadow topics entirely, they'd take up 2 full pages at this point.
We've gotten so many reports in the last few days I'm getting rather confused as to what report is about what.

Also, AGAIN, Do not say if you've reported. The report is enough. We'll point out any rules being broken if any, which brings me back to my original point.
Mini-Modding. You may be trying to "prove you can be a Moderator so you can replace Crazo" or something. Well, if that's the case just give up. We're not replacing anyone anytime soon. Or ever, really.

What if, for example, you're in the chat box and someone rolls the dice and theres no mod in there, are we aloud to say "Don't roll the dice, its against the rules"?

Of course, but they might retaliate, so don't get too far into it. If it persists, take a screenshot or two and PM us.

All this garbage just because Crazo leaves. I think the mods should make a secret police of sorts, unidentified members who have special powers over everybody. Like papal dispensation.

Come on, I'm only joking; I think they should ban far more frequently than they do. People blatently disregard the rules, and spam with impunity. They should be punished.

^Exactly. How many times have you guys repeated this? No one takes Mods here seriously since Mods never take action and only "remind" us. It's a waste.

@Marnex: I guess we weren't the ones who took action when all those members were warned and/or banned.

^ Just the problem: There should be a one day banning period. Then there would be a middle road between the useless warning and all-powerful ban.

The concept is simple.

Three Warnings = Ban

You are given plenty of chances and room for error. There are no suspensions, only permanent bans.

The rules are very clear. However, if you have any questions, do not test your luck. Simply ask a staff member and we'll get to you as soon as possible.

It's good to know people are reporting. ^_^ If you are an aspiring moderator then do what this: viewtopic.php?f=4&t=338 thread says! You're hurting your chances by mini-modding guys.

Really? Because if that were true, then a reminder wouldn't be necessary, since there's already a couple of these topics in the "Rules and Update" forum.

viewtopic.php?f=3&t=16946

viewtopic.php?f=3&t=16539

viewtopic.php?f=3&t=17857

viewtopic.php?f=3&t=13983

And they're all in the first page. It's like no one checks there. That's why i said it was a waste.....

What's a waste? The reminders or the warnings? Or both? Are you saying you're willing to sacrifice your chances? If that is the case, I'll be sure to ban you next time you break a rule without warning you ahead of time. I don't have a problem with that.

^Heh, I meant the reminders. Because they're all cluttered up in the same damn page and no one cares for them, since another "reminder" had to be made.

It's only fair to create one reminder for many small offenses instead of banning everyone on their first offense. Would you not agree?

I would propose one warning, then a one day ban, and then if it is for the smae offense, then a permaban. Other transgressions are separate but equal.

Didn't you see the 5 topics I posted that are in the same forum that say the same thing as this one? And they're all in the same page. Seriously, if older topics saying practically the same riminders like "Use report button" or "Don't Mini-mod", and are all in the 1st page of the forum, then why make another?
Obviously, people here don't give a **** about the "Rules and Updates" because they continue to break the rules. And it's even more obvious that no one cares, when another of this same topic saying "No Mini-Moding" and "Use the report button" had to be made, while already having multiple topics in the 1st page of the "Rules and Update" forum saying the same thing.

Don't you just think it'd be easier to PM the people who apperantly "Mini mod" to see the damn "Rules and Update" forum? I'm sorry if I sound like an ***, but I still think these multiple "Reminders" are a waste when they're all cluttered up in the same forum.

You're supposed to come here very time there's a new post. If you did, we wouldn't have to post here as often. How would you know if we added a new rule?

I am glad that backseat moderating has finally been brought to attention. It is awful to see it in the forums, as it does not solve anything, only helping to make threads become more and more offtopic. It is a form of self-righteousness and spam, and it is not your job to control the site's content unless you are a moderator or admin.
If you find something in the forums that is completely unacceptable, there is this thing called the report button (the button with the ! on it). Use it, and do not say anything to the offending poster unless it is on topic with the thread. Do not mention the report.
If you find something in the chatbox that is a minor offense such as dice rolling, a friendly reminder should be acceptable, but no more than once, and ONLY once. Persistent offenders should be reported to an active moderator or admin via forum PM.
If you find something in the chatbox that is completely unacceptable, immediately PM an active moderator or admin, do not say anything to the offending user at all.
If there is no active moderator or admin, pm one whom is relatively active.

As a chatbox example, once upon a time I dropped the fusion bomb in the chatbox, and Lune started bragging about how he was going to report me for cursing, etc. etc. etc. and how I was such a bad boy, yak yak yak and how I was gonna get banned, blah blah blah.
Well.. I never really did get any notification of any warnings, etc. and it took him some 15 minutes of bragging and telling me how much of a naughty child I was before he left to "report" me. But like I said, I haven't been told of anything.
This is actually a good example of backseat moderation within the chatbox, although I did not do this specifically to create an example, only out of raging at RIKU saying he makes Youtube Poop Music Videos.
This whole ordeal resulted in me basically saying that if he was going to report me, he should have done so already and stop flouting about with his self-righteous bragging.
No real harm done.

Now imagine that it was not me who dropped the f-bomb, but rather a Troll, and someone like Lune (or indeed, Lune himself) started his self-righteous, analness of saying "OMMMMMM I'M GONNA TELL! AND YOU A BAD PERSON! AND YOU GONNA GET BANNED! AND YOU MUST BE LOCKED UP! AND YOU GONNA BE SORRY!"
What would happen here? A lot more f-bombs for one, not to mention lots of insulting and flaming and trolling and possibly a spammed inbox of nude pics all for Lune! (I have seen similar occurrences in other forums, believe me it's not pretty.) And that's just the minimum damage. The most I have seen is the complete destruction of a forum through trolling, spam, /b/, and wannabes of the Goon Squad!
All at the hands of a special group of anger management failures known as "Pro Trolls."
Oh sure, the "Pro Troll" will get his sorry butt banned, but the damage will have already been done, no matter what the extent, and many "Pro Trolls" know their way around forum bans anyway, and will only come back for more.

Of course, we are most likely to deal with regular trolls, who will still rage in the face of backseat moderation within the chatbox, creating massive spam and ruining everyone's chatbox sessions. (Baww, but true.)
But then again, we usually do not have such bad people on this site, so why worry?
Get this: even if the victim of your minimodding does no damage outside of their offense, you will have spammed. You derail the topic on the thread/chat, possibly even starting a massive drama fest, which only makes everyone hate each other at the end of the day/week/month/year/lifetimeifyoureallywanttotakeitthatfarinwhichcaseyoureallydonothavealife. Then the real moderators and admins have the job of cleaning up the mess left over from the drama, in addition to your backseat moderation that sparked the fire, as well as the offending post.
Nice job. You would have successfully made the forum staff members' jobs much harder.

This is the best part of that post. The rest sounds like the subway ramblings of a hobo with a spoon in his ear (seen it before, not pretty)
