Best Pokémon spin off.
What do you think was the best Pokémon spin off? I still think that Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time/Darkness/Sky was the best Pokemon spin off made.

Re: Best Pokémon spin off.
tie for Rangers and Mystery Dungeon.
Rangers had the adventure to keep me occupied for a long time, while PMD had the emotion.

Either TCG GB or Pinball, though Pokemon Puzzle League is probably my favorite incarnation of Panel de Pon.
Then again, I haven't played many of the Spin-offs. Other than the above mentioned, I've only played Stadium GSC, Hey You Pikachu, a Win9x based TCG simulator that was more of a how to play tutorial than a proper game, and Conquest. I've shown interest in both Mystery Dungeon and Ranger, but something else always took priority in spending my money, I'm not fond of PC emulators, and my dedicated emulation device I was using back when I could se couldn't handle anything newer than SNES/Genesis/GBC.

PMD: Explorers of Sky is my favorite with Pokemon Pinball: Ruby and Sapphire coming in second. I find it a shame that PMD: Gates to Infinity wasn't more like Explorers of Sky in the character selection aspect. I heard the story was lackluster as well, but I can't judge since I didn't play past the demo.

Re: Best Pokémon spin off.
yeah, GTI was pretty...dull. There was a lack of choice of characters, no quizzes/Yes-No questions (except for one at the end that I won't talk on), and the story went against most forms of PMD logic that PMD veterans would know fairly well. Also, it seems to lack a after story as well. The other PMD games had a bit of a after story, with there being more missions with story lines and stuff..but GTI doesn't seem to have that. It may be that I've stopped playing too soon (in-game week and a half after beating the main story), but there doesn't seem to be much of a story/plot beyond "Build your paradise and get higher ranks". In fact, the only reason I got it was because I am a fan of PMD and love emotion driven games with good gameplay. There was definitely emotion, and average gameplay...but it all seemed lack luster. The game also had a dip in difficulty compared to the previous games..why? 2 words: Companion Mode. If you wanted (which I did, admittedly), you could play as a pokemon you recruited while your main team was stuck somewhere to gather up items...instead of grinding the main team to higher levels. So then you could just stock up on rare important items instead of strategy and levels, rendering it a longer but easier game. It's quicker and easier to gain rare items in the town/missions instead of going through a hard dungeon over and over to either escape or faint to go over and do it again and again till you're able to beat the boss. That's what's bummed me the most. Sure, it sounds nice, and it is nice..but it feels so much more better when you finally beat the boss after grinding on the 3rd (or so) floor right below it for so long.

I don't know if Pokemon XD counts, but if not it's def a tie between Ranger and Snap.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't Gates to Infinity a download only title while the earlier PMD games were full retail games? That might have something to do with the dip in quality.

Re: Best Pokémon spin off.
MD is boring at first, but it gets hard and frustrating at some point.
Ranger is a lot of fun, but it basically is the reason of 90% of the scratches on my screen as well as how my stylus became a blade because of it being sharpened on one side.
BR was cool, the simulations were awesome to see and it brought a lot of cool battle styles up, but it was awful to use online because after one battle the internet would fail me and I had to restart my Wii.
I'm gonna count super smash >:I

I don't see why XD wouldn't count, as both XD and Colosseum are spin-offs.Fox Boy wrote:I don't know if Pokemon XD counts, but if not it's def a tie between Ranger and Snap.
No, Gates to Infinity was sold as a physical cartridge alongside the e-shop download, BUT like other 3DS games they have released, there are limited numbers of the retail version. This is most likely to encourage downloading the full game from the e-shop.Jeffery Mewtamer wrote:Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't Gates to Infinity a download only title while the earlier PMD games were full retail games? *Consults Wikipedia* I must have gotten Gates to Infinity mixed up with the Adventure Squard trilogy which was released only on Japanese Wiiware.

Re: Best Pokémon spin off.
the ranger games were all very good, with each new one being better than the previous instalment ^_^ they were pretty fun to play and relatively easy, too
i have to say that pmd takes the cake though. not only was pmd:eod my first ds game but the story was fairly captivating and it had a lot of emotion (that the ranger games arguably lacked). theyre frustrating at times but think i just need to get better at playing them <w>;;

Counting the Orre games as spin-offs, Gale of Darkness is easily the most ambitious and most well-rounded example of them all.
