Pokemon Go.
View the trailer here.
Who this is:
The Pokemon Company has announced a new app for iPhones and Androids: Pokemon Go.
Why you even bother to care:
This app coupled with a purchasable locator card pin, allow you to find Pokemon...
IN THE REAL WORLD.
I ain't even kiddin'. I'mma speakin' with 'postrophes and bad grammer, so you know it's real.
You can find Pokemon outside, just by looking around for a while. What does this mean? It means you can walk outside and throw Poke Balls at wild Pikachu.
You can also challenge other people to a battle and trade.
It's the thing you've been hoping tech could and would do for years.
And it's finally happening.
Your mission objective:
Be the very best that no one ever was.
Your test is to Catch Em' All.
And probably train them or whatever.
BUT. Much more importantly, you guys have to trade me a Victini if you catch one or I'll die. True story.
Alternatives are: Sneasel, Chandelure, Braxien, Meowstic-F, and Smearagle.
I'm kidding, but this is makes me pull out my list of Pokemon I want to catch.
Currently Answered Questions:
-Legendaries? In the announcement trailer, they showed an event where a bunch of people went somewhere, to try to catch Mewtwo. Everyone comes together
and works at the same time to catch it. If it's defeated, the everyone who participated, gets Mewtwo.
- Is there a price? Nope, it's 100% free. There's, *ahem* In-app Purchases, though. No one knows what it does yet.
- Exactly how lame is the pin, do I have to keep it in my pocket, is it necessary too? You don't have to do that at all, it it's like the Pokewalker but better. the pin does
one thing, alerts you if a Pokemon is nearby. So, you don't need it, it's just cool.
The pin can be worn in several places, because it can be clipped onto clothing, like jackets and shirts, and probably hats and my favorite, the inside of a jacket. Just like Ash.
It also looks like this.
Questions we wanna find the answer to:
- Pokemon Amie?
- Is Seismic Toss just as strong as the one in the anime?
- Is this that thing The Pokemon Company was talking about for their 20th Anniversary?
- Is it April Fools day in Japan?
- When is Pokemon Go comeing out?

Re: Pokemon Go.
JWittz made a video about this.
He pretty much says we should keep our expectations low. Because it might be like the Tokyo Game Show trailer of Sonic and the Secret Rings.
It's not as amazing as it is was in theory. And that kid was in the way the during half of it.
But, the potential is still there since, Pokemon Dream Radar happened, and Smartphones do things 3DSes can't, I think they're stronger.
Personally, I'm still aboard "this-will-be-the-greatest-thing-since-sliced-pie" train.

This could be potentially interesting on its own.
I really hope this isn't a sign of things to come though (i.e. Nintendo dropping upteen zillion different cheap mobile games on us and leaving their consoles to rust).

This seems pretty neat, but I wouldn't be able to get it when it comes out anyways since I'm still stuck with an old phone.
Don't know how much I'd use it anyways.

Wooooooooooowww 3 minutes of video editing followed by 3 seconds of gameplay. I'm SOLD!!!
If you can't tell, I was being sarcastic. This looks dumb and useless as a game, but it's some solid work on the editors parts. Looked dope af.

More like
Pokemon Go Away am I right guys?
Although, I vaguely remember them trying something like this before with the Dream Radar or something. Is this any different from it?

Re: Pokemon Go.
All Pokemon Dream Radar did was made you spin around in circles to do one of the following:
1. Get Dizzy.
2. Get Tired.
3. Sit in a swivel chair and pretend you're standing up.
4. Stop this madness once and for all.
Also applies to Sonic Lost World 3DS's Special Stages.
Pokemon Go, on the other hand makes you stand up and go outside. You couldn't trade or battle anyone either, and your selection of Pokemon to catch was much more limited. Also I remember something about shooting Pokemon with some
laser in that game.

It sounds like a cool concept, but it definitely won't be as cool as shown in the trailer. Nowhere near.

Re: Pokemon Go.
It's really chilling to think about how Iwata didn't want to move into the mobile market, and nearly 3 months later they're already making games for it.
I really hope it doesn't turn into some gross microtransaction game and that they at least stick with a single price tag for all content. It'll be nowhere near the quality shown in the trailer, and will probably be really bad looking on phones like mine with a poor camera quality.
Definitely a cool concept, but I'm not really excited until we see some actual gameplay.

About those transactions.
We can only hope the in-app stuff is really dumb or something we can just get ourselves by standing outside for a few good minutes.chaoadventures wrote:- Is there a price? Nope, it's 100% free. There's, *ahem* In-app Purchases, though. No one knows what it does yet.

Re: Pokemon Go.
^ No. That's the price for an Great Ball. The Ultra Ball is $1.99 at least.
I still see Nintendo as the "We ain't gonna make you pay." guys, since they only make us pay for something significant, like characters for Smash Bros.
The price of nothing but free, seems really fishy though.

Re: Pokemon Go.
This is something that they've been talking about the last year: bringing their IPs to the mobile market, where people have already accepted that way of doing business. I think it's a little naive to call "in-app purchases" anything but micro-transactions. It's a cute attempt by Nintendo to sanitize the word and pander to anyone who remains blissfully unaware Nintendo has been catching up to bad market trends with the only real resistance that was Iwata the past two years, but I find it hard to believe they're bringing a guaranteed money maker to the mobile market and not treating it as a money maker.
That aside, after being amused there's a pokemon in my shower while I'm putting on make-up or the pharmacy parking lot or town park, I dunno I could keep at it even if there is something redeeming about it and it's devoid of unreasonable purchases because it basically amounts to a less interesting version of games already out there with added AR.

Re: Pokemon Go.
I think of "In-app Purchases" as saying the same thing. Like the words "Bright" and "Shine".
Using the same phrase all over just makes it stale, boring, and unable to be used in a book without (supposedly) annoying the crap out of you. I also don't think they're the only ones using the term.
Also, allow me to once again bring up the main reason, "Good Graphics" Pokemon is always the best answer to everything.
But, I could actually see this going somewhere. Where? Pokemon Battles where IVs and EVs don't exist. In other words, no one knows how to breed and train the most battle optimal Pokemon
anymore, so everyone can just battle like it's Red and Blue and nobody's gonna be annoyed that it takes a whole day to train one perfect Pokemon. I could just battle again.
It also let's you find other people with it, and to be extremely honest, you can't find other people in real life without going to an event or sheer luck anymore. Pokemon went under the radar somehow.
Wait. Now that I think about it, couldn't they just put this on the 3DS? I mean, the 3DS has a camera, and they made Dream Radar and Shuffle so, I don't think this is that far out of reach. Unless,
3DS is too weak to have a Gyarados fighting a Snorlax using, at the minimum, those sweet Pokedex 3D models (Then make it a "New" 3DS exclusive). That or the 3DS's camera AR actually can't function without those weird cards.

Re: Pokemon Go.
They aren't putting this on 3DS because Nintendo is greedy and realizes that, as much as people like and purchase the 3DS, more people have phones. By focusing on phones, they can sell tons of product without having to worry about if it'll be popular or not. It's gonna be popular because it's free with ease of access to just about everyone in the world. The only possible way they could mess this up is if they overpriced their microtransactions or make a legitimately bad game.
This is gonna be a success, and that sucks. Once this is a success, you can guarantee they're gonna produce more of these money grabbing machines with other iconic nintendo IPs.

Re: Pokemon Go.
I'd say "In-App Purchases" vs "Microtransactions" is like cheap vs inexpensive; different wording that carries the same denotation but different connotation. Also, "In-App purchase" doesn't carry the same "it'll only be stuff with tiny pricetags" connotation that microtransactions do and as such might be less of a misnomer.
Anyways, while huge install base(smart phones outnumber all other internet connected devices put together if I remember correctly) coupled with generally low expectations makes the mobile market a near perfect avenue for releasing little throw-away cash grabs for promoting a company's more serious efforts, I'm not seeing any non-technical reason for not having a 3DS version of this app. I'm pretty sure the 3DS as already seen several apps of the quick cash grab/ad for a real game variety, and it's not like this being available on 3DS is going to hurt how much revenue it brings in. Not to mention, in the unlikely case this app happens to tip someone over the edge towards buying a device, it would be more in Nintendo's interest that that device be a 3DS(which Nintendo gets a cut of) rather than a smart phone(which Nintendo gets nothing from).
Either way, so long asNintendo continues to make games that serious effort went into, I couldn't care less if the join the nickel-and-dime mobile gamers poor bandwagon and find enough fools tobring in serious revenue from that.

Some announcements regarding Pokémon Go
Two weeks until we get a release date
One thing that wasn't touched on in this thread is the plus clip, which I'm really excited that you just have to push the button a certain way when it notifies you one is nearby. Meaning if one somehow showed up at my job, I won't get in trouble for being on my phone
"CJ why are you not working and rhythmically pressing a button"
Uhhh.... Reasons
Also the new trailer looks cool. Just wish we had something to go off of for the actual game instead
