[UPDATED] Origin of Character Chao in SA2B

Post by PurinxPop »

^ Title

Dug around the japanese internet and I found the method that the character chao were obtained in the japanese version. No, it was not an event. I'll share if no one else has contributed this information as I don't want to make a redundant post.

EDIT:
I feel dumb for saying there were no events; after further digging, turns out there were events. :omochao:
Right, so first off, the demo disc.

DEMO DISC

Image

This is the "Nintendo Gamecube 2003 E-Soft Catalog". These were packaged with enterprise bundles in Japan only (not sure if you could get them outside the bundles). Software catalogs did exactly what the name implies: catalog software. Listing 116 titles at the time of release, it also contained demos of a few games, one of them being SADX.

The tab with the Chao reads "Joi Kyarii", which is an abbreviated katakanization of "Joy Carry". Joy Carry is a Gamecube term used in japan to denote the downloading of minigames to the GBA from a GCN software.

Selecting the tab let you download a multitude of minigames from the "Sonic Team Joy Carry" collection.
Puyo Puyo with Everyone, Chu Chu Rocket and Tiny Chao Garden could be downloaded.

Upon selecting the chao game, you were prompted to select one of three chao to put in the garden.

Image

The next screen brings you to a loading screen where your chao is processed. It reads "LEA CHAO DOWNLOAD". "LEA" or "REA" being a katakanization of "rare", as character chao are referred to as "Rare Chao" in japan.

Image

Transferring the chao to SA2B or SADX gave 1000 Rings as well.

EVENT

You could obtain them at an event too. These were pictures taken from the 2001 World Hobby Fair and some Sonic Party.

Also I can't seem to find the picture now, but there was another revision of the software that let you download a Shiny Sonic, Shiny Shadow, Shiny Tails, and Regular Knuckles and Amy chao. I'll update this post once I find it.

Ok that's it I hope this post enlightened your soul. :omochao:

Hmm? I don't think I've heard about this before. I'm curious to find out the method, since you say it apparently wasn't an event.

Yes, it was not done through a promotional event, but through a demo disc.
The speculated public event might have existed, but I highly doubt it because I could find no solid evidence of it nor did any site make reference to it.

I'll compile the information tomorrow with translations. I'm off to bed now.

I can't embed images in my post without it getting marked as spam. Is this a prohibition for new members?

Yeah, seems like they put this in to stop users from creating accounts to post shock images.

So, there is no way for me to embed images? Is it possible to ask an administrator to lift posting restrictions and instate privileges, or must I wait an allocated amount of time?

Honestly, you just need to make one more post.

5 is the minimum to post images.

Is there anything to suggest that this "Joy Carry" could only link to japanese versions of SADX and SA2B or would it, theoretically, be compatible with western releases?

So this is the coolest post i'v found on CI in the past days since I returned here. It seems with your edited post, we now finally have clarity where some if not all of these rare legit chao came from. The question remains, can we receive this on a NTSC-U (American) or other game discs?

Within a couple google searches, I discovered I could buy the the catalog disc for about 30$ on ebay. With the catalog being in only Japanese and wanting it on an american memory card the only way I could see is with minor hacking. I read that there's a 10$ hack program called FreeLoader that can play any region discs. Without testing (and the money to at least buy the catalog) I don't know for certain the best method to get them.

My original idea was to get both the things I mentioned, receive the chao on a Japanese copy (just assuming it won't work on an american one even with freeloader) and see if I could trade chao between two different region memory cards. I don't even know if there's information anywhere about cross region chao trading. The back up method could be alternatively seeing if its possible to take the chao data from the Japanese memory and putting it on your pc through a method on the chao hacking forums, then reversing the process on an American or other game save.

If anyone wants to test or correct my last paragraph, I highly encourage you to... if not, I may end up buying and testing when I get money and a sa2b for gamecube again lol.

I just bought of copy of the disc with the demo on it... I will dump the disc as soon as it arrives in the mail and upload it if anyone would like. Load the .iso onto a modded Wii and it's finally a "real" way of obtaining these guys.

I don't see how this will matter... GBA is region free so I assume you could transfer to an America GBA with a NTCS Sonic Advance just like PSO. I may be wrong. I'll keep you guys updated the disc should arrive in a week or so. I may have to solder up my own transfer cable though lol I think I lost mine.
