Chapter 5: The Monster of Time.
Spoiler:
Chapter 5: The Monster of Time.

It slammed its huge sword down in the ground creating a large ditch separating Nick and I, from Kausa and Aidan. He was strong, but I picked up he was slow quickly. It then noticed Nick and I, and started going after us.

"Run!" I shouted at Nick.

Nick and I started running off away from the monster. It continued on with its assault, slamming its sword down into the ground multiple times.

"THINK YOU CAN GET AWAY, HUH?" it shouted "THE LAND REPEATS ITSELF. YOU'LL NEVER ESCAPE"

"Damn it, he's right." Nick exclaimed, he turned his head to me. "What do we do Retro?"

"Okay, you know that wrist bow of yours?" Nick looks at his wrist bow and nods. "Well, make sure it's loaded. I have an idea."

I turned around and stopped running, took out my bow and a single arrow. I adjusted my glass monocle, and aimed for its eye. I stretched the arrow as far as I could on my bow, and let go. The arrow leaped out of the bow like an animal, and went straight for its eye. It lifts his shield up and blocks the arrow.

"NICE TRY" it shouts, coming at me for one more hit again.

"Nick. Now!" I shout. The monster turns around, remembering the other person. Only to be blinded by Nick's Arrow.

"ARGHHH" it shouts,

"YEAH!" I shout. "Good Job, Nick" I watch him nod, and smile.

"HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA. YOU THINK THIS WILL STOP ME?" It grinned. "RECONSTRUCT"

Suddenly the body disassembles itself into Redd, Gren and Blu, then becomes one again. This time with a Blue Sword, a Red Shield and a Green Body.

"Damn it" I exclaim. "Come on Nick, we gotta go back to Aidan and Kausa."

I run past the giant and regroup with Nick, we both soon regroup with Aidan and Kausa trying to catch up.

"Retro..." Aidan gasps for air. "I know....I know how to beat it."

"What! How?" I urged.

"When he reconstructs. That's when we attack." He began. "They can only reconstruct when they are near each other, if one is moved away or hurt, they can't."

"But, he reconstructs too quick." Nick interrupted. "We can't move one of them away either, they'll just attack us if we did."

I saw the monster rush at us, we only had a few more seconds to decide what to do.

"I got it" exclaimed Kausa, she took out a larger staff from her side, this one was long about three quarters her size. It had a green crystal on the top of it. "I'll use this. It can teleport people from far away places to where I am."

"That's brilliant" I smiled "Okay Nick, same plan. Aidan, you stay with Kausa, when she transports one of them you have to kill him."

Aidan and Kausa ran off, and the monster came back for round two. I readied my bow and arrow again, but it caught on. It slammed its sword on the floor creating a small earthquake disrupting my balance and I fell. Nick thought that in this time he could hit the monster. But as he tried to hit it, it turned around and knocked him back.

He was coming for me this time. I tried to ready my bow, but he knocked it out of my hand. I tried to escape but it picked me up with its hand and held me.

"MY FACE WILL BE THE LAST THING YOUR PATHETIC EYES EVER SEE" it shouts. It readies its sword. "ANY LAST WORDS?"

"Look out" I unloosen my arm from his grip, and slam my arrow into his eye again. It drops me, and I run to grab my bow.

"HAHA AGAIN?" it shouts. "RECONSTRUCT" the body breaks into Redd, Blu and Gren again.

"KAUSA NOW" I commanded. She lifts her staff up into the air, and a green light is comes from the top. Soon a green veil around Blu is seen and he vanishes.

"What?" says Blu as he faces Kausa. "Arghh" he shouts trying to punch Kausa, but is soon stabbed by Aidan and falls to the ground.

"Thank you" Kausa replies.

I ready my bow again, and aim at Redd. "No wait" he says putting his arm out in front of him. I let go of the arrow and it goes straight through him, he falls and doesn't move.

Gren started to run. I wasn't fast enough to take a bow out of my quiver, and I had to chase after him. Suddenly he is tackled by Nick, and silenced for good.

"We did it." I laughed. "Nice going guys, especially you Kausa. That was some genius."

"T-Thanks Retro..." she smiles.

"Okay, that's all nice and all, but how are we going to get out here?" Aidan starts to question.

"That's a good point..." I started to bite on my thumb in thought, until Nick shouted.

"Hey. Look" he was pointing off into the distance. The illusion that these monsters made was becoming unstable, and soon disappeared. Showing a road leading straight to a town.

"Hey, that was lucky." Kausa said smiling.

As we continued on into the next town. I really started to think about the past few days. If I never saved Kausa, would I have won? If I never saved Aidan or Nick, would I still be here? Hell, if I was never chosen, would the world even be here as we know it? I soon ignored these questions as we approached the town...

For my next section, I am going to let one of my party members do a "Campfire" story, as it will be from their point of view, and it wouldn't make sense for me to do it.

Back story can be added to each character from their point of view, it's not exactly ruining the story in any way, since it's just some fun and isn't directly linked to the story anyhow.

You'll see the next campfire story in a bit.

The Stories from the Campfire: Aidan and Nick
Spoiler:
Night swept across the land after we left the town. It was nice to be out on the field once again after years of sitting around in Gendis. We all gathered wood for a fire, which I lit, and sat there in the warmth for a bit. Kausa seemed pretty down in the dumps about what happened and I guess I couldn’t blame her. A lot of death just happened, and that golden axe wasn’t going to pay back the lives lost. A gave a deep sigh, looking at my tome. I should know the cost of human life, after all.

I abruptly stood and asked Nick if he wanted to spar with me. He seemed pretty surprised by the request, probably because we hadn’t sparred since I came back home from my absence. He agreed and we stepped away from the fire to leave Retro and Kausa to talk amongst themselves. After some time of silence he finally popped the question, “So what the hell didja bring me out here for?”

I chuckled, “I just wanted a good dummy to practice some sword blows on.” I tossed my tome and robe to the side and unsheathed my sword. “Maybe if you beat me I’ll give you a straight answer.”

“I cannot stress enough how gay you’re sounding right now. Beat you. Straight answer,” he tossed his gear aside, pulling out a sword. “Did you bring me out here to come out of the closet to me? Cause I don’t swing that way Aidan.”

“W-What the hell man, why does everyone think I’m gay?!”

“You aren’t?”

I proceeded towards him with a look of anger on my face. “I’m going to enjoy cutting your tongue out.”

“I’m so scared!” he gave a mock cry and placed a hand on his forehead, as though he was about to faint. I gave a slash at his stomach and he gracefully dodged, swinging towards my legs. Quickly I moved down to block and lunged with a stabbing motion. Nick moved to the side and aimed for my shoulder, which I had to quickly block to avoid an arm separation.

The battle went on for what seemed like ages before I was finally disarmed, my sword flying through the air and sticking into the ground. “Drats,” I sighed, “looks like I still got some sword work to do.”

Nick took no time to start celebrating though. “Woot woot, in your face Aidan!” He danced around, raising his sword in triumph. I laughed and removed my sword from the ground, coming back to face him. “So, what made you want to spar? I haven’t seen you fight since you came back from the Royal Army-“ he suddenly stopped himself and stared at the dirt. “… I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to bring that up.”

“It's fine, that’s the past now right? Who cares if a squad of my closest friends died because of me? I sure don’t.” I angrily shoved my sword back into its holster and sat down on a log, putting a hand under my chin.

“No need to snap at me, I said I’m sorry ya asshole.” Nick propped himself against the log, head resting on it, and looked into the sky.

“I know I know, sorry man. It’s just the thought of all those people dead because I couldn’t keep my eye on the prize.” I slammed my fist on the log. “God dammit, why the hell did I agree to go with that Retro guy?! He’s a fool, a fool who wants to be the hero for everyone. A knight in shining armor to all the ladies, I bet he’s hitting on Kausa right now, talking about how HE killed that guy with HIS arrow, not even giving us credit. Seriously, why didn’t you speak up? He’s such a-” Suddenly I felt a slap across my face and a sting on my cheek.

“Aidan, you talk too much.” Nick simply said, lying back down. “Now then, I think we both know why we went with Retro. He’s a good guy, maybe not pure hearted, but he means well. He also saved us, remember that? He wouldn’t do something as underhanded as that. Besides, I feel like this isn’t about us. We’ve both had our chance to be heroes and we both screwed the pooch pretty hard. So let’s help him with his chance right? That’s what I figured at least.” His eyes scanned the stars as he paused to think. “Besides, I’m sure if your squad was alive they wouldn’t have condemned you for what happened. You had no idea that there’d be an ambush.”

4 years ago, I had been on a mission with my squad to eliminate a band of bandits that had been terrorizing a local village. On the way we had stopped to help a woman who was being confronted by a large group of bandits. Another squad was already there trying to stop them but we decided to help them as to avoid any death on their part. After defeating the group and tying up the survivors, the other squad thanked us and asked where we were off to. I told them about the mission and we realized one of the bandits had slipped away. The squad assured us they’d catch them and we proceeded on our way. When we approached the area they were supposed to be, a large number of them flanked us from both sides. The single grunt that escaped had warned the bandits of our coming and they were prepared for us. We suffered a large number of casualties as soldier after soldier died, every single one of them a close friend of mine.

I was the only one who survived the attack, and when I returned I was told my eyes were empty. I immediately resigned and rode home, never picking my blade or tome up again. Until now I guess. If I hadn't explained myself to that one soldier, hadn't stopped for unneeded backup, if I would've done anything else besides what I did, maybe this wouldn’t have happened…

A single tear ran down my face. “… Either way, I never thought I’d be back to battling as a tactician. Could’ve sworn my leading days were over. In any case, if I remember right, during my time with the Royal Army, you were running around stealing right?” I grinned at him, dropping the subject to avoid any more memories.

“WELL, I suppose you can call it stealing. I just called it creative borrowing.” He laughed and sat up. “Yeah, I did some stealing from merchants and shops and whatnot. I’m not proud of it, I’ll be honest, but sometimes you just gotta do what you have to do. It’s hard living when you have no home. Luckily you remembered me when you got back and let me live with you, saved me from a life of crime!!...” he did some sort of jazz hands and leaned back.

I nodded and looked into the sky with him. “Guess we should probably head back now, we’ve been here a while.” I gathered my things and we walked back to the fireplace.

Both Retro and Kausa were sleeping and I dropped to the ground, lying on my back. For a long time I was in deep thought about our conversation, I knew Nick had kept some things out of his past on purpose but I guess that was for another time. Slowly, sleep fell over me and I closed my eyes, the world turning dark.

Chapter 6: The Town of Fanfic..
Spoiler:
Chapter 6: The Town of Fanfic.

"You can't be serious?" Nick said in disbelief. "There's no way you've slept with three girls at the same time."

"Oh yeah?" Adian replied "Well you can't disprove it."

"There's no need" sighed Nick "I know you're lying."

"You're just jealous" laughed Adian. "It's understandable, after seeing your failed attempt at trying to pick up Kausa it's pretty obvious you don't know anything about wo-"

Aidan soon paused as Nick punched him in the face. He fell to the floor and a fight then ensues.

"Er...Retro, shouldn't you stop them?" Kausa wondered.

I sighed "Look, I think it'll be better if they tire themselves out. I still don't know how we got to this conversation from talking about Cats."

We soon got to the next town. I broke up the fight between Nick and Adian, and dragged them to town.

"Where are we?" Nick asked rubbing his bruises.

"Er...." Kausa took out a map "We are at.....FanFic."

"Fanfic? Never heard of it." I answered.

"Fanfic was a fairly new town it came about only recently, but it did get a lot of villagers in a very small amount of time. Fanfic is a town to rival others. It is pretty much the number one place for exports. They have everything from Rocks to Gold, and it's pretty much the reason a lot of people came here to start their life."

"You read that off the map didn't you Kausa?" I said

"No." She replied "My mother was from here, I came here a lot when I was young."

There were loads of banners and flyers up. There were coloured flags and stalls everywhere. It seemed as if something was going on. I picked up a flyer on the floor.

“The Originality Festival” I read

“I LOVE THE ORIGINALITY FESTIVAL” Kausa cries out. “There’s food, games, parades, contests and a whole lot more.”

She grabs me and starts pulling me back and forth. “WE HAVE TO STAY HERE, RETRO. IT’S THE BEST FESITVAL IN THE WHOLE WORLD.”

“Okay, okay.” I reply, trying to get away from her bear-like grip.

“Good” Nick said “I can't deal with another day of fighting, I'm hungry, tired and I need a day off."

We walked around the bustling town all day. We bought some food, armour, and some clothes. We went to a lot of stalls, and played a lot of their games. There was an arm wrestling booth as well. Aidan, Nick and I all tried to best the strong man, but failed.

“Damn it, that’s rigged” shouts Nick.

“Yeah, we should’ve bested him” replies Aidan.

As Nick and Aidan bicker on about how the game was rigged, Kausa steps up and challenges the strong man one on one. As the match starts, no one moves their arms, until Kausa slams down the strong man’s hand in a quick succession.

“W-w-what?” stutters a shocked Aidan.

We continued to enjoy the festival all day. We enjoyed a small arena tournament of locals in the town, as well as Nick and Aidan signing up last minute, only to lose in the second to last round.

Night soon fell, and we all watched the skies, as a fireworks display ended the day.

“Huh, we should probably find an inn to rest at.” Kausa yawned.

“Yeah” I said, taking my glass eye patch off to rub my eyes.

We all walked to a local inn. As we entered the door, we were greeted to a loud cheer from some other inhabitants sharing a drink; they must’ve enjoyed the festival as well.

I walked up to the nearby counter, and rang a bell “HELLO” I shouted, looking over the counter “Anyone here?”

Suddenly, a man with a very wide grin walked out, he was rubbing his hands and licking his lips, “Yessss?” he said.

“Yeah…, um” I spoke, scratching the back of my head.

“I assssssume you want a place for the night?” He continued to smile while rubbing his hands.

I compose myself and say “Yeah, we’d like four rooms please.”

He continues to stare at me and smile, then laughs really loud.

“W-what’s so funny…?” I ask.

“You want four rooms...” he sniggered “Just for you…” He then burst out laughing again.

“Yo, Retro” Nick interrupted “What’s with the Joker over here?”

“I honestly don’t know” I replied.

Kausa and Aidan soon walked over, and the inn keeper fell to the ground laughing, but soon composed himself once he saw Kausa.

“My, my…” he said, getting up. He leaped, and grabbed a hand “…why don’t you sleep in my room tonight my dear.”

“Um…” stuttered Aidan “I-I think you want her” Aidan pointed to Kausa with his other hand.

“Ahh” screamed the inn keeper letting go of Aidan’s hand.

“Okay, enough!” I exclaimed “We want four rooms. FOUR”

“Heh” he laughed, getting back up.

“Here.” He threw a key at me, then three more to everyone else. “Number’s on the key. Breakfast at 8, Lunch at 12, Dinner at 6, bedtime whenever. Rent is 350CP a night. By the way; name’s Maximilian Plaguefiend, you can call me Max.”

We all walked up the wooden stairs to the next floor. This inn was pretty quiet upstairs, as opposed to how it was before. It was nice to hear nothing but the gentle breeze from the window. As we got to the next floor, there was a large hallway with 2 doors on each side, and a window at the end of the corridor. We each checked our key numbers and went in the assigned doors.

As we each entered I shouted “Night!” at everyone, in which everyone else replied the same.

As I lit the lantern in the room, I noticed how big the room was. It was a square room, wooden floors and walls. There was a red wooden bed on the left, a desk with a few pieces of paper and some books , a few cupboards to store things in, a trunk under the bed, and a big window. I looked outside and saw the lights from the slowly dying festival. I looked up and saw the stars in the sky, as well as the moon. It was big tonight.

I placed my Bow and Quiver in the trunk, and removed some of my armour. Took off my boots, and took a book out of my bag to read before I went to bed, after a few minutes of reading my mind couldn’t concentrate on the words, so I blew out the lantern and fell asleep. Over the covers of course, I was a badass and sleeping over the covers was a sissy move, as my mind drifted off, I soon was sound asleep, hoping tomorrow would be a good day.

Chapter 6.5: The Town of Fanfic: Fanfic Harder: A Guest Story
Spoiler:
The town of Fanfic had one secret that only I and a few others back in my days in the Thieves Guild knew about: The Diamond of Literature. Said to have been dug up by the first author, it gives great creativity and cures the writers block of whoever owns it. It was given to a a collector here years ago as a gift, and has been kept in the clocktower. Now that I was here, I had every intention to get it.

Years back, me and Aidan had a bet. Whoever could divide a single watermelon into the most pieces within ten seconds could ask the other to do any favor for them. I won. And I was holding onto that favor until when I felt I needed it most.

The moment we sat down in this hotel, I started fixing up my gear. I syphoned some oil from a lamp to make a few explosives. The wristbow was as good as new, there was no holes in this old coat, and my gloves had fingers again.

I knew that Aidan was probably unaware of my plot, so his door was locked. Was I gonna knock? Hell no!

The lock for his door was a simple one to pick. I didn't break a single pick, nor the lock, while opening the thing. I kicked the door open, and saw a sight that haunts me to this day.

Aidan was wearing just a bathrobe, sitting on the edge of my bed, staring me dead in the eyes with a combination of horror, embarrassment, and anger on his face.

"You just broke into my room while I'm half dressed! And you call me the gay one!" he screamed at me.

"Shut up. We're going on a heist. Seeing that clocktower held up by the metal poles out there? Yeah, we're climbing that,"

"...are you INSANE? I'm not doing that, and you're not doing that!" He was, to say the least, flabbergasted. Bamboozled. Confused.

"You owe me a favor. The terms state ANY favor, no matter how large. And this is the favor. Now put on your god damn gear,"

He obviously didn't want to, but I guess he realized if he didn't, I was going alone. And that I would probably die or get everyone in trouble. Aidan pulled on all his gear, pouting as he did so. I opened up the window and tosses a grappling hook to the next door roof top. We were all ready for action.

I carefully tiptoed across the rope, while Aidan clung onto it from on top, slowly pushing himself forward. He wasn't used to doing this kinda thing. I was.

It was go time.

We quickly traversed the rooftops, barely making some of the jumps between gaps. We climbed loose brick walls. We were 90% of the way there when Aidan asked me something.

"Why are we even going after this thing?"

A good question. I never told him much about my past. When he found me, I was a poor beggar/thief. For most of my life, however, I was only the latter.

"You see, Aidan. When I was a teen, there was a thieves guild. We had influence everywhere, things to take and more money to spend than anything. There was a single contract that would make us so rich, we could probably buy everything in every store,"

He nodded his head to show that he was listening, though he was a bit busy trying to keep up to me to speak. Out of breath and all.

"Anyway, we set out for this thing. It USED to be in the possession of an author who churned out bestsellers by the dozen, Arbuckle Rothwild. His rival wanted the thing for his own use and would pay his entire fortune for it. He was certain that getting it would pay him back twenty-fold. No arguing with that. So, my friend made a distraction for his personal guards, staff, and Arbuckle himself while me and the rest of the team broke into his office to steal the thing. It was held in an old wooden chest," I gasped for air after saying so much, looked back to Aidan to see if he was still listening, and continued.

"We decided that taking the chest itself would be easier, since it had one of the best locks I've ever seen. I took one handle, and another took the other handle. We broke out of the window, when an archer spotted us. The guy holding the other handle was shot in the face before we could even tell he was there, and I fell into a bale of hay below from the force. The guards were stupid and couldn't find me, however, they found the rest of the squad I was with and had them killed," I was looking a bit upset then most likely, I couldn't tell, but Aidan was listening.

"Anyway, I got back to our headquarters. I handed the chest over, and I was sent to steal and heirloom from the archer as revenge. When I returned, the watch had burned the place to the ground, killed every member publicly, and proceeded to do the rest with every other base we had. I'm probably the last member and I was forced into poverty," I sighed. That's my story.

Aidan was about to comment when we arrived at the clock tower. Tall and gorgeous. The clock had a massive lamp behind it to make it glow. The lamp was oil powered and ancient. One of the "legs" of the tower had a ladder attached to it to make refueling/maintenance easier.

"So... they hid a gem in this thing?"

"Next to nobody would dream of climbing a giant clock tower, nor would they think about breaking into the lamp maintenance room,"

"Makes sense. But, is this really worth the effort? What are you even planning to do with a gem that gives you inspiration?"

"No clue. Keep it in my pocket or something for when I need to write things,"

It was obvious he wanted to talk about what I just told him just by the look on his face, but I was too focused on what we were doing to care.

The ladder was tall and rickety. I could have sworn it was about to snap off and splatter both of us on the festival streets below, but it didn't. Thank goodness, retro would kill us both if we died.

Once we reached the little platform surrounding the clock itself, I immediately rushed over to the maintenance door. The clock said it was five to midnight, so it made sense for the town to be deep in sleep.

I was attempting to pry the door open with a couple picks when Aidan shoved me aside and kicked it down. Only then did I realize that the door wasn't even attached anymore.

"You're an idiot," he said, putting his palm to his face.

"Quiet. We're here,"

The lamp was nearly frying us it was so hot in there. A small, ivory box was attached to the base of the bulb, glittering from the light.

"Help me get this off. The box is probably worth a lot as well,"

We sat down next to the box, and using all our might, removed it. It was locked with THE best lock I've ever seen. It'd take some serious tools to remove it without ruining the box itself.

"We got it. Can we leave now? And never mention this again?"

"Hold on. They're going to know a thievery took place and will investigate. I'm gonna destroy the evidence, the explosion will be blamed on a leak in the lamp,"

Aidan mouthed a few obscenities at me, but he was too slow. I lit all of the explosives on my belt and tossed them at the bulb.

"NICK, WHAT HAVE YOU DONE?"

"RUN!" was all I could say.

We both tailed it out of the room and ran to the edge. It was obvious the latter would fly off from the explosion.

"We're gonna die, Nick, and it's your fault!" he said, a bit angry.

"I'm sorry, man..." I responded, a couple tears in my eyes.

We fell to our knees and embraced each other.

A ear shattering explosion followed a second afterwards, sending us both flying, still cluthing eachother through the air.

Our screams could be heard from the stars above.

I thought I was dead. I was laying on a rooftop, staring at my hands. I was a bit bruised and cut up, but I was alive. Aidan laid next to me, eyes wide open, gasping for air.

"We're alive! And breathing! No broken bones! Jolly cooperation!" I screamed ecstatically while I sat myself up, arms up in the air.

"S-shut up, man. If I wasn't so tired, I would rip out your throat right now. I hope this stupid thing helps you sleep at night, because you owe me a ton. If retro finds out, I'm turning you into the watch for being a former thieves guild member,"

I didn't even care what he said. I picked up the ivory box, still in near perfect shape indented in a wall behind me.

I looked to the distance, seeing the burning tower before both of us. It radiated glory and success to me, and probably pain and pointlessness to Aidan.

We walked back to inn by foot, seeing some guards rush past us with fire yelling about a gas leak at the tower. We both had dumb grins when we heard that, even if we were in pain.

After we got back to the inn, I slipped the chest into my hidden bag of goodies from our adventures. Aidan went back to bed.
