Things you want to see in CI 2.0!

Post by retrolinkx »

So guys, as we speak Mooncow is fine tuning "Solid CI" so let's talk about what we'd like to see in "CI-too" They're meant to be puns. Solid Snake being a clone of Big Boss and superior (technically) and Dark Pit being called Pit-too, if you don't know.

It's more or less just a guessing game of what we'd like to see. If there are going to be improvements like the ones mentioned in this thread.

Anyhow for me.

Reputation system: One of those +1/-1 things on our profiles. I mean sure, it might be bad if someone made a million accounts and downvoted someone, but overall it could be cool to see implemented and might be something kind of interesting to use for users.
Non-prehistoric image limits: This was an obvious one that will be implemented, but damn do I want it to be implemented faster and with the limit being somewhere between 5000x5000 pixels.
Video embedding: Something like this seems really basic for forums these days, it'd be great to see it on the new CI. Especially if there are more than just Youtube, if we could get stuff like Vimeo and such.
Thanks system: I've seen it on other forums, it's sort of just thanking a user for their post, whether it be humourous or just helpful information. It's mainly for stroking ego, but I wouldn't mind it here.
Thread Watcher: We sort of have it here but I'd like to see it expanded upon to show users who browse threads currently and sub forums.
More dank chao smiley's: I mean come on, who doesn't want more of these? Recolours welcome. :cool: :cool: :cool: :cool: :cool:

What about you guys huh?

Aren't Rep systems and Thanks System basically the same thing?

Also, please no video embedding unless it can be done with HTML5 or a User CP option to have all embeddings converted to links.

Post Attachments(at least supporting common image, document, and archive formats). Feel free to include an autopurge that deletes attachments that haven't been downloaded in x amount of time to conserve server space.

Remove the limit on number of poll options.

Making the links to each subforum, each thread, and the Username on each post an HTML Heading would be nice.

A mobile view that reduces the thread lists to just the first unread, start of thread, and first few and latest page links and individual threads to just post content and Usernames would be nice, especially if forcing the mobile version to load doesn't require switching my user agent. Alternatively, an option to hide part or all of the User info boxes next to posts would be nice.

Given how what remains of the oldbies are getting up in age, maybe a section that's only visible to members who have set their birthdate on their profiles and are at least 18 years of age and in which rules against mature content are relaxed(say, can post ecchi, but no actual ******/****).

The difference is that Reputation is for an individual, where as Thanks is for a post, which I think does say something very different. I feel like we should only have one token that we can move to up vote or down vote someone's Reputation, and being able to change it later on, as opposed to one a day, which is what I have seen on other sites. Whereas a Thanks would be good if someone gave a genuinely beneficial post on a board, maybe find a way to make it clear that people agreed with it.

I also think something should be done for mobile view, but I'm not sure I agree with Jeff's suggestion on how to go about it. Maybe see what is available first.

I definitely, 100% disagree with the Mewtamer's suggestion on adding an adults only section. Anyone can just make an account aged 18 or older, and I could just change my age right now. Even if we locked aged, it only makes it inaccessible to people who did not know when they registered, and only stops people who are unwilling to make a new account.

The only system I have seen that I would consider acceptable for a site to introduce an adults-only section is IMVU, but if I remember correctly, that either required an ID and/or a charge, and I doubt anyone is going to be eager to share personal information like that, and they easily could provide faulty information to whoever would be approving the transfers into this new Adults Only Usergroup, and a Usergroup is the only way to make boards that are privatized, as that is how the Moderators see the Staff board.

The internet is a big place, and on it we do not need to add a red light district to Chao Island. I'll joke about stuff like vore here, but I don't bring it here because this isn't the community for it.

pretty sure at least a few of the remaining active members hate me for this garbage by now but i'd like to see the gender option replaced with a gender/pronoun field that's just a textbox for users to fill in since not everyone pays attentions to signatures and such (where i have my pronoun preference stated)

preferably i would like to see it as:

Code: Select all

Gender/Pronouns: [textbox]
since not too many people are well versed in the concept of non-binary genders and the overall topic of transgender, i don't think it should just be called the Pronoun field so having it also specified as the Gender field would ease that possible confusion

and yea, i realize that just leaving it as a textbox would make it so anyone could put random crap in it that does nothing to identify themselves and if they decide to do that then well that's all fine and dandy. i refer to people as they/them anyway unless stated otherwise so it's not like that would be a significant problem

i don't care for the three current options as their mileage varies from individual to individual. i have mine set as 'unspecified' since i'm taking the options literally, i'm not male and i'm not female either so i'm left with that but at the same time the 'unspecified' option doesn't allow me to state how i wish to be referred to as

sure, i prefer he/him and have a distaste for she/her and they/them but i don't want to specify that my gender is 'male' to make it clear that i prefer he/him. i am not a male, and choosing that option would identify me as such which is incorrect

so really, at this point in time with the current gender options, the 'unspecified' option is just as inaccurate in its implications about my identity as the 'male' option is

on top of that, well, i like non-standard pronouns too and i'd like the option of having them stated alongside my preference of he/him. although keeping in mind the potential size of the textbox, i would just have one non-standard option alongside he/him for the sake of keeping it clean and short.

i don't know, i'm sorry

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
as another thing to suggest, at times i wish i could embed images in the chatbox but i do realize how horribly wrong that could go unless there were mods in the chatbox very often (right now mods don't even bother to go in the chatbox because of poor activity)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

@ retro:

anyway, yea, i'd like to see a reputation system and i feel like the thank system should factor into reputation to an extent. in vague relation to the reputation and thanks systems, perhaps after a while you could gain some sort of special rank if an Authorized Staff Member™ feels that you've especially contributed in some way or another to the site; contributing chao information, significantly entertaining users with fun threads, etc. and this would be re-evaluated yearly so you have a reason to keep doing what you're doing

the image limits definitely need to be increased, no argument there

as for video embedding, i don't care about it but i'm not averse to it becoming a thing so if it happens and people are happy about it, good then i'm happy for you guys. i'm more up for video embedding in the chatbox tho, but like my wish for image embedding, yea, this might end up getting abused significantly unless there's stable moderation

same with the thread watcher, don't mind either way, but i hope if it's implemented, it works and it makes users content

i'd like more smileys in general, i'd like to see some sort of smiley contest thread or something that's monthly or whatever just to give users something to do

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
@ evilpink:
if there was a weird forum hunger games sort of thing that involves banning people for a period of time, i'd be in for that
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

not really sure what else to say here, i don't really want there to be an 18+ section on chao island but if happens, it happens then. i already clog up skype group chats with unpleasantries

5,000 by 5,000 pixels for image limits is obscenely large. The current ones are way too small but 5kx5k is way too big. I'd say probably around 1250x1250.
Or there could be inline photo shrinking, along the same lines as Something Awful. They have [img] tags, and they have [timg] tags. [timg] takes a photo, shrinks it down to a thumbnail, and enlarges it when it's clicked. Image tags are automatically turned into [timg] when you hit quote, so it also eliminates the problem of people quoting gigantic images multiple times in a row.

I agree with Mewtamer, video embedding needs to be here, but it needs to be optional.

I volunteer myself as tribute for making the dankest of chao smileys. Also for unifying the colors between the Dark chao ones because they don't all match and it drives me bonkers.

Honestly, the 18+ forum suggestions was kind of a joke, but I'm completely serious about everything else. Though, I'll admit half of my suggestions are all about making the site more screen reader friendly(or at least more friendly for the screen reader I use).

Also, if video embedding is added, autoplaying shouldn't be allowed at the code level.

To explain some of the reasons behind my above suggestions:
Of the navigational keyboard shortcuts provided by my screen reader, the ones that get the most use are h for jumping HTML headings at any level and 1-6 on the number row for jumping between headings at specific levels. When a page lacks headings or other elements useful for jumping over parts of the page a sighted user can skip over easily, I have to either read through the page line-by-line or use ctrl+F to search the page. When reading an entire thread, this isn't so bad, provided the "go to first unread post" link works right and puts my reading cursor, but it does mean finding a specific post in a thread is much harder when I can't remember an exact quote to type in the search box, and it means I havve to effectively read everything in the thread list instead of just the thread title and whether there are new posts. I've already turned off signatures to save time reading threads, but it would be nice to have a means to do the same with user infoboxes, or to have headings in places that make jumping to the beginning of a post or the most important links on a page quickly.

As for video embedding: Most streamin sites use flash, and while YouTube has an HTML5 player(and the vast majority of videos work with the HTML5 YouTube player), most embedded YouTube videos use the flash player. My screenreader can't see flash objects period and I have no means of interacting with Flash, and even if you don't have flash installed(I can't use it, so I don't have it, which is also the most reliable way of forcing YouTube to load videos in HTML5), the flash-based embeddings just prompt you to install flash instead of providing a link to view the video on the original site(which in the case of YouTube videos, would mean switching to HTML5, which works just fine in nearly all cases).

As for mobile view: I find that, for many sites, the mobile version is a lot more screen reader friendly, as much of what becomes clutter going from a full-size monitor to a smartphone screen is always clutter from the prospective of a screen reader, and I even have a user switcher add-on installed specifically for some sites that try to re-direct you to the desktop version if you type their mobile URL into a desktop browser.

Oh, and a quick reply box at the bottom of thread pages would be nice.

An 18+ board is a horrible idea and always has been. I don't expect 100% favorable changes if Mooncow goes through with this, but if he does, the one thing I want the most is for all the forum posts to be preserved in some way, either by porting them over or archiving them. Maybe even go the extra mile by providing an offline archive for download, but I doubt he'll go that far.

I want tons tons tons tons tons of smilies because I like sprites and just looking at them and yeh.

(LETS GET A DOWNVOTE BUTTON THAT WILL BE GREAT) Pink no. (PINK YES) Don't listen to her.

Maybe we can give ourselves custom titles instead of having the ranks and stuff? I dunno.

Also keep the avatar size to a reasonable level. Like. No bigger than the "Author" section of the forum display already is now. I loathe when someone has a huge avatar and it stretches out the page or makes that box area of the thread bigger than it should be. My OCD loses it.

ALso swear auto filters are fun. Especially if they turn into something silly. Like change all forms of the F bomb to flower dance or something. and the term for 'female dog' be changed to 'wonderful lady' or something.

Swear filters are fuuuuun.
Darn kids and their boost mode. In my day we had Spin Dash for speed AND WE LIKED IT.

A couple of years back there was a discussion about a "serious" discussion board, which was basically your generic 18+ discussion which would be allowed instead of locked and put away quietly.

Mooncow came in and basically said
Mooncow wrote:I don't really want to create a Mature/+16 section for the site, as this is basically saying the rest of the site is for childishness and other ramblings.

Granted that there are a lot of young users here, but Chao have been around for a while. There are older users out there that may want to be part of the community and get turned off by the amount of "immatureness".

I don't want to concentrate all "serious" discussion into one place. But everyone just needs to be sensible. "Puberty" isn't an interesting topic for a serious discussion/+16, in fact, its more interesting for the younger users.
Should there be a puberty topic on Chao Island? Well it's up to you what topics you all talk about, and which ones become popular really. There is a lot of random questions and not much unique discussion in GD i've noticed, but this is something I will try and work on.

I don't want to treat the community like babies, or split users into "mature" and "immature". We should all be able to thrive. Maybe its an issue on my part, and how the forums are set out, so i'll see how i can improve things.
Which is fair enough, I doubt we'll be seeing a 18+ section on the new CI, even if the suggestion was a joke.

I dont see an 18+ section becoming a thing.

But a sort of liking or disliking posts system could be fun. Heck maybe a like can give a chao point

WHile we're on THAT topic, maybe chao points could be revamped in some way. Instead of little inventory items for show, what if they could be redeemed for custom ranks, titles, special username fonts or special fonts in general.

for like, "serious"/serious discussion of sensitive nature that's not particularly appropriate for 15 and below aged users, there could just be a section named 'no fun allowed' that just has some sort of warning that there is indeed, no fun allowed

If given the go-ahead for making this many smileys I'd probably do the following: Make every emotion currently usable in all alignments, fix the dark chao color schemes, add a flying omochao emote, then do a simple standing emote for each of the first evolutions in each alignment. Secondary evolutions may come later, and tertiary ones probably never.
Crazo Chao I'd clean up and unify with the rest of the emoticons and then send over to whoever's in charge of adding smileys these days.

1. I want there to be fun.

On one of the other forums I frequent, the Off Topic section does include a "Debate Zone" forum separate from the General Off-Topic discussion board.

Then again, it's one of the least active forums over there and that place is arguably far more active than Chao Island overall.

Still, "Debate Zone" or something similar might provide a neutral enough wording to avoid the rest of the forum devolving into spammy insanity.

That said, I feel that any re-organization of the forums should probably tend towards condensing discussion rather than spreading it out. We've already have several forums that sometimes go days or weeks without new posts, and adding new forums willy nilly would only increase how empty the forums feel at times.

Some suggestions for reorganization(feel free to ignore or pick to hell):
Perhaps merge Chao Hacking and Chao Island Contributions into a single Chao Research and Development forum.
Perhaps merge Chao Recipes into Chao General and create a sticky in Chao General as a catch-all for new recipes.
Perhaps re-order the condensed Chao Category as:
Chao General
Chao Help
Chao Research and Development
Perhaps merge the 3 Sonic boards together and make them the first in a new Games Category. The category would also include Pokemon(now given it's own spot on the index page to make it more visible, Forum Games and Chat(though perhaps cut out the chat part to give General Discussion more activity), Other Games, and Role-Playing.
General Discussion moved to the top of the Off-Topic Category and perhaps move the Usergroups forum to this category as well if not dissolving it into General discussion. The thought of Merging the Art and Story sections into a single Creative Works forum crossed my mind, but that might shrink the Off-Topic Category too much(and since I've never frequented those sections, they might be the most active parts of the site for all I know.

While I like the feeling of getting Liked as much as the next guy, the thing about like-dislike systems is that they can cause mad indoctrination. People tend to figure out what gets the most likes (whether they be popular opinions, jokes, or really short posts) then stick to posting those.

And then things get predictably repetitive real quick.
