Bring back gender?
Bring back gender?
Does that old gender mod work for phpBB3? If it does, I think it'd be nice to have it implemented again.

Re: Bring back gender?
on one hand i totally miss my pink symbol
on the other hand, it can go into my profile and is in it and even when there were symbols, people would still not pay attention either because they weren't sure who's serious, didn't notice, or were amateur, socially awkward contrarian disasters and deliberately gave people skepticism while crying about tumblr
so idk my opinion, but i wouldn't mind it back

Re: Bring back gender?
It would bring more trouble than its worth. You can always just put "i'm a(n) x" in your signature, location, motto, etc if you want people to know without having to ask you.

how is having a gender box trouble causing lmao.Rajikaru wrote:It would bring more trouble than its worth. You can always just put "i'm a(n) x" in your signature, location, motto, etc if you want people to know without having to ask you.
and yeah, a gender box would be cool, like if there was a male/female/undefined(non binary) from before c:

It was removed for a reason lmao. And even if it wasn't removed for an actual controversy reason don't act like gender talk at all doesn't bring controversy.Ravenyte wrote: how is having a gender box trouble causing lmao.

Re: Bring back gender?
compromise: add gender back into profiles except the only gender you get to have is a tiny chao sprite
what i actually want: having the old gender field back is better than not having anything at all although a textbox would be the best; for most people writing dude/girl is going to be enough and then for others they'll put in their pronouns instead rather than specifying a gender. only adding just more symbols i think would create too much vagueness around what pronouns you should use for the individual in question if it isn't a straight up mars or venus symbol. having a couple of different symbols to choose from and a textbox to be the pronoun field basically would be like absolute best scenario but i don't think it's needed.

I think adding back in the original three genders (male, female, undefined) would be nice.

^Obviously, my gender is .
Unless there's coding problems or it's simply a big hassle, I see no reason not to. Or to put it.
I think Fox's icon was set to female when it was there, so I had no idea what was what.

My memory isn't 100% correct all the time but if I remember correctly, it was only "removed" because of the switch to phpBB3.Rajikaru wrote:It was removed for a reason lmao.
......Or maybe it was around when we got mottos. idk
I was hoping most everybody here had moved on from thinking "gender talk" was controversial. And in any case, tons of forums and social media sites have a gender option, what makes this one any different?Rajikaru wrote:And even if it wasn't removed for an actual controversy reason don't act like gender talk at all doesn't bring controversy.

Re: Bring back gender?
I mean honestly there was one, maybe two guys who actually made a controversy out of gender stuff, and one of them was banned. So I don't really see that being an issue.
I'd be totally down with having a gender indicator again.

Re: Bring back gender?
Prior to this thread, I wasn't aware that it had been removed or that it was an mod rather than a basic feature of the forum software.
Though, if it does return, might I suggest giving the combined Mars-Venus symbol Hermaphrodite as it's alt text(Maybe an Earth symbol for those who really want to not disclose their gender)? Or maybe an Mercury symbol for that, given that Hermes(Roman name Mercury) was the father of HermAphrodite, the mythological figure the term hermaphrodite originates from.
Also, you people talk like controversy is inherently a bad thing. Granted, I think the pronoun arguments are a bit silly, but I actually enjoyed the more serious aspects of the discussions we've had on gender issues, as well as several other controversial subjects. Besides, a world where everyone agreed on everything all the time would b boring and stagnant.

Re: Bring back gender?
I only more recently noticed it wasn't around anymore. I think it'd be nice for a symbols system with a Male/Female/Unidentified and even an option to make it blank. The usefulness to me is less about knowing someone is a man or a woman, but moreso knowing what pronouns to use.

@ crazo:
to add onto your input, if the old gender field was added back along with the addition of having a blank option; instead of having the unspecified symbol as being the default like before, i suggest that the blank state should then become the default.
i feel at that point specifying male/female/unspecified (well unspecified would be more like other/non-binary at that point) would be choosing a clear indicator of not necessarily gender but pronouns associated with the gender the symbol represents. the unspecified/other option would represent singular they, and then we all know what pronouns the male and female symbols are associated with.
for new users that would sign up and thus have the default blank state and don't bother to change it until after making a few forum posts, singular they should be practiced out of courtesy unless they make suggestions about who they are that otherwise contradict singular they usage. for users that willingly choose the blank option i assume that's a choice of them literally choosing not to specify a gender for the sake of not caring what pronouns get applied to them
overall, if your suggestion were to be used i think it would completely work as long as we had a universal agreement of what each gender symbol or lack of symbol stood for in terms of referencing someone. i still think though the best option is to just have a textbox, while the suggestion of having a textbox along several gender symbols to choose from is just adding fanciness to the whole thing.
still though, chao sprites as gender symbols, the ultimate compromise

Re: Bring back gender?
I don't think gender indicators would be a bad idea to bring back, even just on profiles, if for no other reason then it becomes much easier to know which referral language to use for other members.

Re: Bring back gender?
I would be alright with bringing back gender in any form.
That being said, I understand Nova's concerns. All it would take is one person to join the site with a dissenting opinion and people would go mental. Hell, the fact that Roivas pointed out that there were only around two people that were the catalysts for such a memorable amount of controversy really says a lot regarding this site's members' ability to deal with such situations appropriately. It takes two groups to tango in such a context, and considering most people on this site are pretty accepting of all kinds of gender and not really discriminatory over it, the fact that such a minuscule number of people was so quickly capable of whipping a large number of them up into a frenzy definitely raises questions regarding whether it's worth it to have a gender slot or not. I would argue that's the difference between this site and other sites, in response to Twiddle; other sites tend to have a larger population, so even if some members of a community go mental, there are usually more than enough people not embroiled in the conflict to reel it in, not to mention more active moderation than CI has so that issues can be discussed more widely between moderators.
That being said, it's questionable whether adding a gender slot would cause changes to the level that I mentioned regarding if one dissenting person joined, because surely even if they were to join now they could kick up over the fact that most people who would put something non-binary in their gender slot tend to have it in their signature anyway.
Bleh, I'd be cool with bringing gender back.

My gender is a Toaster.
If you bring the gender signs back, could you please make "Toaster" a third option
*this is a joke, please don't add "Toaster" as a third option.*

I really want the Gender option to be back. I don't want anyone confusing me as a female.
