[Released] Chao Resort Island! (Fan-Game)

Chao Resort Island is a 2.5D Chao raising game available for PC and Mac!
The game takes place on a tropical island which hosts multiple resorts for you to raise your Chao in.

Standard Features:
  • Playable Characters – raise your Chao as either Sonic, Shadow, or Knuckles
  • Egg Colors - purchase 13+ different egg colors
  • Multiple Fruits - feed your Chao different fruits to raise multiple stats
  • Toys and Interactive Objects – let your chao interact with different items to increase its intelligence level
  • Chao Alignments – Neutral, Hero, and Dark (Influenced by the 3 characters)
  • Chao Abilities – from swimming, to flying, to running, to playing musical instruments
  • Chaos Drives – boost your Chao’s individual stats (Extension Version Only)
  • *24 Chao limit – raise up to 8 Chao per resort

Special Features:
  • Time and Season change - set based on your computer's clock and calendar (+adjustable)
  • Hats and Accessories - dress your Chao to help them stand out from the rest
  • Gamepad Support – play with an external controller (Xbox 360/One Interface)
  • Chao Games – test your Chao’s skills through resort activities that correspond to each stat
  • Online Updates – get updates without having to manually download them (PC Only)
  • Bulletin Board – read my blog posts and update info in-game via online

Glad you guys like it! For now this is all I have planned before release. Since I will be able to include updates via online, I can include extra features in the future while still developing my main game. This way I can assure you the game will get done and won't suffer the same fate as most of the fan-games.

Sorry for the lack of updates! I recently moved and I don't have internet setup yet.
I've managed to get a lot done in the past few weeks, so I'll attempt to periodically post everything I've done during that time.

Here's one for today:

Chao are now able to wear hats and accessories! Like food and other items, they can be bought from the shop.

Some of them will also be available in different colors:

There should be a chao storage system IMO, that way you can have as many chao as you want, just not all at once.

Also, here's a few suggestions:

  • Dark Chao sleep in the day and wake up at night by default, and vice versa for Hero/Neutral Chao.
  • Normal plants grow in the day and grow slower in the night, vice versa for Dark plants.
  • Chaos Drive animation should be shorter and have some sparkle particle effects when finished.
  • A way to get character chao. Maybe through mini games, races, etc, or through reincarnation(Example: Power-Fly-Red Chao that is wearing a Red Chao egg shell turns into a knuckles chao when it reincarnates)
  • Maybe have Special chao as a reward for winning races? Maybe against others online? Maybe as events? Special chao act like regular chao, they just look cool.

Those are just a few off the top of my head. :blink:

Hey thanks! I like your chao storage idea, maybe if this becomes big enough I'll consider creating one!
As for your other suggestions:
- That doesn't sound like a bad idea! Since it's system time based, I'll probably need to limit the amount of chao that sleep during those times, since you're likely there to play with them.
- Plant growth won't exist, but I'll see if I can do something similar with the resort fruit.
- Special Fx are definitely being considered for that and much more. Once the sfx are done for the drive intake, I'll adjust the animation length.
- Character chao will likely be given out as either contest prizes, in-game prizes, or extension DLC rather than via formulas. The amount of coding it took to get everything to this point is astounding and I'd like to avoid extending production time to create these things.
- Previous point, however I have created a luck-based chao that will come out of a normal egg all white and sparkly. The chance is pretty slim, kinda like shiny pokemon. Hope that sounds interesting!

I'm using Game Maker 8 to program this. I am actually looking for additional sprite artists that would like to help with creating more hats and accessories for the chao to wear. It'd be great to have someone who's into 3D modeling and texturing. As you can probably tell, I'm pretty fresh at that. :chaocry:

New updates!
All 3 influential type characters will be officially in the game:
Sonic -> Hero
Shadow -> Dark
Knuckles -> Neutral

I've decided to add Knuckles for multiple reasons:
1. To add a neutral influence - this will save people from switching between characters just to keep the chao balanced
2. To understand how difficult it would be to add additional characters (not so easy unfortunately) - each character takes about 88 frames of animation to complete
3. I like Knuckles

Here's why Knuckles doesn't fit being in the neutral role.

- Hasn't told sonic to get off of his island for years
- Has fought alongside sonic multiple times and on his team
- Tikal would work better
- Add Tikal as another neutral option she's my waifu

I think if any character is going to be neutral Knuckles is a decent fit. Personality-wise he's a jerk and he gets into fights with Sonic a lot. He's a good character overall but if any main Sonic character is a good fit I think it's Knuckles. I don't know if you planned on including them but if any characters are truly neutral it would be Shadow and Chaos. Shadow isn't evil but he isn't good either, and Chaos is good-hearted but vengeful and morally grey at best. E123 Omega and Rouge are sort of neutral, they don't really act on good and evil intentions just whatever benefits them.

Tikal is a very good-hearted character, there's really no way to describe her as neutral. She tried desperately to protect the Chao on Angel Island, befriended Chaos and kept him tame, guided the player in spirit form thousands of years later, and helped to calm Chaos when he went on his rampage and almost destroyed a city.
