The Chao Project early Prealpha released!

Post by ChrisOfChaos »

An early prealpha of our game is out! Anyone is welcome to try it, but please read the instructions included with this build. I can't stress that enough because there are a lot of details about this version that everyone should be aware of. Just remember that this is a very early developer's version of the game, mainly meant to show how far we've come, as there's a lot of negative stigma surrounding Chao fangames since so many of them fail early on. I can't stress this enough, because I hate it when people assume a prealpha means nearly complete and complain about current issues.

THINGS TO BE AWARE OF:
Prealphas are usually not released to the public because they're not close to complete, but because of the bad stigma surrounding Chao Garden fangame projects and the sheer number of them that get cancelled, our dev team agreed it was a good idea to show off our current build of the game and let you all have a try playing it. Please keep in mind that while it's still pretty fun to play at the moment, it's far from complete and bugs/glitches should be expected. We'll be updating the prealpha over the next several days, so if you're struggling with a current version wait for the next one, as we'll be addressing any game-breaking issues.

VR SUPPORT:
A separate VR version of the prealpha for the HTC Vive will be released on Saturday, October 14th. VR support is fully functional but has to be released in a standalone version of the prealpha due to glitches with the camera.

PROBLEMS/GLITCHES TO KEEP IN MIND:
-We haven't tested this game in lower-end PCs. Everyone on the dev team has high-end PCs, so we haven't been able to test how this build runs on an average system. If it lags let us know immediately.
-While in Chao Mode, the player can accidentally switch to another scene, enable or disable music boxes, and possibly (though rare in the Station Square Garden) fall off the stage. This is due to the main player mode remaining active while in Chao Mode, and it will move with you in Chao Mode.
-Progress can't be saved yet. We'll be adding this at some point but it's not available in this build of the game.
-Fruits/Chaos Drives don't work. There is an ingame affect on them, but the sliders don't reflect that so there's no visual effect.
-Black Market is in very early stages. We just built it a few days ago and haven't had much time to work on it recenty.
-Currently evolving two or more Chao at once causes the Chao to "crash" and become non-interactive. We haven't figured out why this is happening yet but leaving and reentering the garden should fix it. Also Chao's yellow tint is supposed to be replaced with a green tint, but it remains yellow for some reason.

CONTROLS
Movement:
-WASD to move, Space to jump, P to pause game.
-Soundtracks can be toggled via buttons in the garden.
-Press G to enter Chao Mode. USE WITH CAUTION: Keep in mind that while using Chao Mode, the scene can change at random, the soundtracks could be turned on or off, and when switching back to normal mode you will be in a different position in the garden. This is because the "normal mode" player will move around the garden with you while you are in Chao Mode, and can walk into triggers such as scene changers or music boxes.
-Press E to exit Black Market (you can only enter it from the Station Square Chao Garden just walk into the orange arch). Click on items to zoom in (there isn't a way to zoom out yet).
Chao Interacting:
(Note: Triggering evolutions, reincarnations, and Chao removal will affect all Chao in garden at once)
-Press T to pick up Chao, and left click to drop/set them down (You have to look directly down at a Chao and be very close to it for this to work, if it doesn't give it a few tries)
-Press E to evolve Chao (IMPORTANT NOTE: Currently evolving two or more Chao at once causes the Chao to "crash" and become non-interactive. We haven't figured out why this is happening yet but leaving and reentering the garden should fix it. Also Chao's yellow tint is supposed to be replaced with a green tint, but it remains yellow for some reason.)
-Press F to reincarnate Chao.
-Press H to remove Chao from garden.
-Left click on Chao to pet them (this doesn't always work, also the only way to bring up the mouse cursor ingame is to click offscreen or press the Windows key)
-More Chao can be spawned by pressing M to open the debug menu. It's advisable to wait until the first spawned Chao hatches before spawning another one, otherwise they can get stuck.

GARDENS (Will be adding more over the weekend):
-Station Square Garden: Classic and most well known Chao Garden.
-Farm Garden: New addition added recently. Main garden is finished, but some other features still need to be added to it.
To be added:
-Neutral Garden: Built but not available in this version.
-Hero Garden: Built but not available in this version.

Do you plan on making VR support for the Rift? I ask because that's currently the only VR headset I own and it'd be neat to try out the VR version when I have a chance.

Yeah there's an asset on Oculus's website that should allow us to do that. Do you want to help us test Oculus support this weekend? It'd be a big help, everyone on the dev team owns HTC Vives.

Sadly I'm in college and the Rift is at home. I don't go back until around Thanksgiving.

Oh, wow. I've definitely got to try this out when I get the chance - this project has caught my interest for quite a while.
