Name a character from Sonic the Hedgehog besides Sonic

I recently attended a gaming convention.
There was a "gameshow night" where they had Family Feud.
One of the questions was, "Name a character from Sonic the Hedgehog besides Sonic".

The entire audience was shocked by the results.
Try to guess before you look at the results.

How did Big get third?! And not Shadow or even Metal Sonic on the list?!
When the guy guessed Big the announcer even said, "Oh yeah right, okay lets get you another strike".

They got these answers from asking 100 gamers online, in a wide age range.
Not that many people like Big so him being number 3 is a shock. If you don't like a character, hes not going to be the first thing to pop into your mind when asked a question.
And it doesn't matter if Shadow sucks now, hes been in more games and gotten his own game.
He should have made the list.

Generally, I am starting to dislike everything about the Sonic Series. But if I still was asked, I'd probably choose Ray, Mighty, Charmy, or Espio.

Nintendo Power loved to trash poor Big. I wouldn't be surprised if some gamers only knew him through all the hate he gets. If you hate something enough, you're going to remember it. Like the arrow to the knee joke! Also just because a lot of people hate him doesn't mean there aren't people who know of him well enough that he's one of the first characters that come to mind. Also doesn't mean there aren't people who love him.

Personally, as a Big fan I love the heck out of this.

Also, since Big's Fishing is easily the most infamous of the alternate playstyles that Sonic Team has experimented with that feel out of place in a Sonic game, Big making such a list doesn't seem so strange. Now, if anyone out of Tails, Knuckles, or Eggman is missing, I would be surprised.

^So the list includes the sidekick(Tails), the villain(Eggman), the original rival(Knuckles), the most well-recieved character originating from the Dreamcast era(Gamma), and the least well-recieved character originating from the Dreamcast Era(Big)?

Yep, makes perfect sense. Especially when you consider that only the Genesis Trilogy and the Adventure Duology ever had mainstream levels of attention.

As popular as Metal Sonic is among the Sonic Fanbase, He is for the most part, a bit player, Showing up mainly in spin-offs or a bonus unlockable. The cloest he comes to playing a Starring role is in Sonic CD(which requiring an expensive add-on to the base console limited its exposure on its original platform and was among the last to be released on a Modern system), Chaotix(which is downright obscure outside of the Sonic hardcore), and Heroes(which came out after Sonic began his fall from the Limelight).

Also, while Shadow enjoys a love/hate relationnshhip with the fanbase, you have to remember that, except for his first Appearance, all of his appearances are after Sonic lost his position as a console mascot and after Sonic lost its position among the greats of Mascot platformers. Even then, the Adventure games have never enjoyed the Popularity the Genesis Trilogy had(and note that, excluding Big and Gamma, all the listed characters originated in the Genesis Trilogy).

I guess what your saying makes sense. I just kinda figured the general public, not just Sonic fans, would think of Shadow before Big.

^I can only assume that the people who originally developed Family Feud thought it would make the game too easy if they accepted answers beyond the top five. Afterall, positions 6-10 on the full survey results are probably some very obvious things for most of the questions they ask.

Also, the top five all being from SA1 isn't surprising consider it was the last Sonic game that was a 1st party System seller. Of course, excluding Big, all the listed Characters are ones from Classic Sonic that survived into modern Sonic without hiatus.

Marine? A character who was in a single game? Out of 100+ people? Who most likely are not intensely interested in Sonic? I think the reasoning behind her absence is obvious.

It all depends on who they ask.

They most likely asked people who were around 20 year olds or so, and they most likely played Sonic Adventure 1 on the DC at the time, so naturally you'd say these characters.
