Known Types of Chao

So how many different types of Chao are avaliable to make? We won't be counting evolutions in this list, just the basic Chao itself.

Dreamcast Chao

The Sega Dreamcast games (Sonic Adventure and Sonic Adventure 2) were the first appearance of Chao.

In Sonic Adventure, we obtained the Normal default Chao Egg, and three mysterious Chao Eggs that were found in the adventure fields. This gave us:
Light Chao
Normal Chao
Silver Chao (jewel)
Gold Chao (jewel)
Black Chao (Chacron)

Now, breeding the Chao lead to a variety of other chao:

Amethyst Chao (jewel)
Onyx Chao (jewel)
Topaz Chao (jewel)

Aparantly you can also get Sapphire, Ruby, and Emerald Chao (jewel) in the game, but since I do not know the exact recipe, i will not count these (obtained via Chao editors).

So that gives us 7 Chao in total for Sonic Adventure on the Dreamcast. Sonic Adventure 2 left us with most of the same, but with the addition of Hero and Dark Chao.

Moon Chao The Black Market opened online, which allowed you to download rare Chao. These were:

Black Chao (Chacron)
Silver Chao (jewel)
Gold Chao (jewel)
Ruby Chao (jewel)
Sapphire Chao (jewel)
Amethyst Chao (jewel)
Emerald Chao (jewel)
Moon Chao (texture)

Five of these Chao we have seen in the original game (including default Chao), giving us four extra Chao. That's 11 Chao in total for the Dreamcast Games.

Gamecube Chao

The Nintendo Gamecube re-released the original games with a change to the Chao system, and a slight change in the name (Sonic Adventure DX, and Sonic Adventure 2: Battle).

Monotone Chao were introduced, able to be bought from an in game Black Market.

13 different colours are avaliable: White, Red, Blue, Yellow, Pink, Purple, Sky Blue, Orange, Green, Brown, Grey, Lime Green and Black.
Shiny Chao of each colour were also introduced.
So that's 26 Chao, and including the normal Chao, and Shiny normal, we have 28 for the Gamecube.

Gameboy Advance Chao

The Nintendo Gameboy Advance gave us Sonic Advance, allowing the Gamecube players to get Jewel Chao in their gardens.

11 Jewel Chao could be bought using rings: Silver, Gold, Ruby, Sapphire, Amethyst, Emerald, Garnet, Aquamarine, Peridot, Topaz and Onyx.

That's 12 Chao including the default Chao.

Extra Chao

Time to round up all the other weird and wonderful Chao gained by breeding or otherwise.
Moon Chao
Breeding a Shiny Chao with any Jewel Chao may yield a weird looking translucent/transparant (see-through) Chao. Each one is different depending on the Shiny Chao you use (the Jewel Chao you use is irrelivant). So that's 14 of these weird Chao.

The Monotone Normal Chao seems to be some sort of glitch Chao. As you can see from it's name, it is assumed to be a monotone version of the default Chao.

The Gamecube has the majority of the Chao, but the Dreamcast has the Moon Chao which is unique. Another mysterious Dreamcast Chao is the Black Chao from the Egg Carrier of Sonic Adventure. In the Gamecube version this Chao was replaced with a simple Monotone Black Chao. The Dreamcast version is more like a Two-tone Grey Chao, but not quite the same. The Dreamcast Sonic Adventure 2 Black Chao (from the Black Market) might possibly be different also, but for arguments sake we will assume they are the same (will test this out properly later).
