Chao Adventure is an independent mini game that you can play on your VMU in Sonic Adventure 1.
Sonic Adventure 2 has the sequel, Chao Adventure 2!
To let your Chao go for a walk (an Adventure), you must take it to the big VMU model,
then it will be gently thrown inside of it. Select a VMU with at least 128 free space,
and it will save Chao Adventure 2 onto it.
Once this is done, when you take out your VMU, press sleep,
then press menu until you get to the ace of spades logo. Now press A.
Chao Adventure 2 will start!
(Make sure your VMU has batteries!)
Chao Adventure 2 gives your Chao the most exciting adventure of his life!
Chao Adventure 2 is a bit better the the previous one as it is more of an 'Adventure'
and has actual stories that you can change the result of with your decisions.
Another good point is that you can get special seeds/fruits when you either finish an adventure,
choose a correct treasure chest, or meet a character from the main game.
These can then be taken back to the Chao Garden to be given to your Chao.
In Sonic Adventure 2, the Chao have been given two extra skills: Luck and Intelligence.
Luck and Intelligence can only be raised from Chao Adventure 2.
Increase Intelligence by feeding a Smart Fruit to your Chao,
and increase Luck by guessing the correct Treasure Chests when your Chao stumbles across one.
Luck goes up by 100 when you choose the correct one, and decreases by 100 if you choose the wrong one.

Fights
On your adventure, you may encounter a fight with a Bully Chao. Fight off the Chao by pressing the 'A' button when the selector lands on a clear square. The first Chao to hit the other Chao three times wins the fight! If you win, you carry on with the adventure. If you lose, the Bully Chao takes one of your items from you.
Slots
The game on Chao Adventure 2 is a big disappointment in my opinion. There is no skill involved with it, and is mostly relied on luck. You only win snacks for your Chao from the game and they do not boost their stats at all, which makes it pretty useless.

Remember, your VMU needs batteries! They take two CR2032 batteries. I have found the cheapest place to buy these is eBay.
