Alignment

You can raise a Child Chao into three different alignments: Hero Chao, Dark Chao, or Neutral Chao. These three alignments have different looks and personalities.

Alignment diagram

As you can see from the above diagram, Dark and Hero are at opposite ends of the alignment spectrum, with Neutral in the middle. Chao will normally grow up into the Neutral alignment. However, if you feed them Hero Fruit or Dark Fruit from the Black Market, then they will start to shift towards the corresponding alignment.

Advanced

Alignment is a hidden number which ranges from -1 to +1. -1 represents Dark, 0 represents Neutral, and +1 represents Hero. It starts at 0 for a new Chao, -1 for a reincarnated Dark Chao, and +1 for a reincarnated Hero Chao.

The last bite of a Dark Fruit subtracts 0.15 from the Alignment value. The last bite of a Hero Fruit adds 0.15 to the Alignment value.

If the Alignment value is less than or equal to -0.5, the Chao will evolve into a Dark Chao. If the Alignment value is greater than -0.5 and less than +0.5, the Chao will evolve into a Neutral Chao. If the Alignment value is greater than or equal to +0.5, the Chao will evolve into a Hero Chao.

Hero Chao

To get a Hero Chao, you will need to feed it several lots of Hero Fruit. The Chao will shift slightly towards the Hero alignment with each Hero Fruit that it consumes. You will need to feed it at least four complete pieces of Hero Fruit for it to evolve into a Hero Chao. Do not give it any Dark Fruit!

A Hero Child Chao is white with two angled buds sticking out from the top of its head. It has sky blue markings on its head buds, hands, and feet, and yellow markings on its body. Finally, it has a deep blue ball floating above its head. Your Chao may look different depending on its gradual evolution (explained later), but if your Chao is at least similar to this description, then it should evolve into a Hero Chao.

Dark Chao

To get a Dark Chao, you will need to feed it several lots of Dark Fruit. The Chao will shift slightly towards the Dark alignment with each Dark Fruit that it consumes. You will need to feed it at least four complete pieces of Dark fruit for it to evolve into a Dark Chao. Do not give it any Hero Fruit!

A Dark Child Chao is dark red with a jagged tip at the back of its head. It has light red markings on its head tip, chest, hands, and feet. Finally, it has a pink ball floating above its head. Your Chao may look different depending on its gradual evolution (explained later), but if your Chao is at least similar to this description, then it should evolve into a Dark Chao.

Neutral Chao

To get a Neutral Chao, you must keep your Chao balanced by influencing it towards both the Hero and Dark alignments equally. You can do this very easily; in fact, you don't have to do anything at all! Just don't give the Chao any Hero Fruit or Dark Fruit, and it will grow into the Neutral alignment. Alternatively, you can give it an equal amount of both fruits.

A Neutral Child Chao is light blue with a pointy tip at the top of its head. It has yellow markings on its head, hands, and feet, which turn green as it grows close to evolution. Finally, it has a yellow ball floating above its head. Your Chao may look different depending on its gradual evolution (explained later), but if your Chao is at least similar to this description, then it should evolve into a Neutral Chao.
