Does anyone still like Sonic R?

Post by NiGHTSIsLife »

I love Sonic R. I feel I am alone in this, because everyone else I know either hates it or has never heard of it. The game is flawed, but I beat Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric, and Sonic R is nothing I can't handle.

It's probably my favorite running racer. Granted, there aren't very many running racers compared to cart racers, driving simulators, and racers that use futuristic vehicles.

It's the best available Sonic Racing game if you ask me.

Whooooa, where'd that hostility come from yo? They're just asking if people like the game.

Anyhow, I still think Sonic R is super fun. Some characters are obviously better than others, but it's definitely still a fun game to mess around in if you have a friend.

This:
Lamby wrote: yeah i'd say you're really alone in liking it
Unnecessary rudeness considering other people in this thread have said that they also like it. Also sounded pretty passive aggressive.

Just because you don't like it doesn't mean nobody liked it ever. Hell, when the game originally released, the only reviewers that gave it a score below ~7/10 or 3.5 stars were Gameinformer and GamePro. Just like other Sonic games, at the time it was revolutionary.

That being said it's still fairly amusing that a series based on a character that runs faster than cars has never had a widely and consistently praised racing game released (unless you count Sonic and Sega All-Stars Racing a Sonic game). Whether it's ironic or coincidental is up to opinion. I personally think Sonic R is okay, better than most of the other Sonic racing games, but I prefer Sonic Rivals 1 & 2. If I had to rank racing Sonic games based on enjoyment derived from playing, it'd go something like Sonic Rivals 2( 8/10), Sonic Rivals (7/10), Sonic R (6/10), Sonic Riders (5/10), Sonic Drift 2 (5/10), Sonic Drift (4/10), Zero Gravity (3/10), Sonic Free Riders (1/10).

sure, it's a good bargain bin game in 1997; now it's fun to sell at yard sales for a dollar

i didn't mean to hurt your childhood or pride or whatever. also i wasn't really gonna lay into that kid for liking a video game, just being facetious--but now i'm just derailing so what if i say something like: it's alright for an average attempt at competing with mario

edit: o oops i'm mean :c sry

You really need to work on your passive aggressiveness and over-all attitude. OP was just asking if anybody else liked Sonic R, all you needed to say was "I don't like it", which would've also been pointless, but better than "It's a crappy game, sorry if that ruins your childhood memories or whatever" (not that I personally care about the comment). There are primarily children on this forum now, here to talk about Chao and Sonic games, and what they don't need is you being rude for whatever reason you decide on.

In short, chill.

Meh, I'm pretty use to Lamby, for lack of a better term, trash talking most popular media regardless of medium, genre, and time period. I'd recommend people take her comments in stride rather than blowing them out of proportion.

And in all fairness, Sonic R fans are probably a smaller subset of the Sonic fanbase than Chao fans, who are already a fairly small minority best I can tell, and Sonic R is an obscure enough game that I wouldn't expect many who aren't dedicated Sonic/Sega fans to have played it.

And even for it's time, the final game feels more like a Demo based on a Beta engine than a complete game.

It had 5 tracks in a time were 16 tracks was the genre standard and games with more tracks weren't unheard of.
It has a decent sized roster, but absolutely abysmal balance(I've never gotten good enough to unlock T.T. in Diddy Kong Racing, but I hear he isn't nearly as game breaking as Super Sonic is in Sonic R).
Even by late 90s standards, many of the models are painfully low-poly, though admittedly, that's as much to do with the Saturn lacking the poly-pushing power to compete with N64 and PS1 for 3-D games(Nights into Dreams only looks so good because most of the 3-D looking graphics are actually pre-rendered sprites).
Best I can remember, there is nothing resembling a Grandprix/Trophy race mode, only Single Race and Time Attack modes.

The main thing it has going for it is that it's the only Sonic Racer that actually feels like an attempt to make a Sonic game with Racing rather than making a racing game with Sonic. The Drift games are generic old-school racers with Sonic branding tacked on, and while the riders games might be an interesting twist on Extreme sports/Futuristic Racers, they too are basically tacking Sonic on to something that isn't a Sonic game. Though, it also holds a special place in my heart for being the only video game I've ever hacked(in the Windows version at least, all of the textures are raw bitmap data), and I do like the Music, though sadly, I got stuck with a copy of the Windows port that's missing the music.

If the Saturn had 3D capabilities on par with N64 and PS1, the games Engine had been refined to be on par with SA1, Roster balance refined, and the game have had 4 times the number of tracks, it might have been a decent competitor with Mario Kart 64 or even served to fill the drought for a real Sonic game between S3K and SA1, but instead, we got something a decent gamer could 100% in an afternoon, probably felt old when it was new, and makes one lament that Sega never made another attempt at a Sonic Racer that actually have the characters running.

I like Sonic R for what it is, but it could've been so much more.

I think I remember reading a Sonic Retro thread that said there were much more polygons (more specifically, triangles) on the track than the average racer,
which was why the Saturn version had such horrific draw distance, but I can't find it so I can't confirm it.

I agree. Sonic Riders (the original, not any of the sequels) is another favorite of mine.

I loved Sonic R when I was just a kid, but in all honesty, the best thing about it for me was the soundtrack. I still listen to the "Can You Feel The Sunshine?" And "Back in Time" songs on occasion.

First Sonic game I ever played was Sonic R, so it has a special place in my heart. Even if it's just the soundtrack that kept me entertained back then. :chaohappy:

Billions of people on this Earth and you're the only one who likes Sonic R. Your ability to defy peer pressure is astounding.
Eh. It's not absolutely horrible like some people'd have you believe... I dunno, I'm one of those weirdos that would rather be bored than angry. Unless it's bored into anger. Then someone has to die.
Still, there is some merit to it's existence. The games runs well enough, the colors look nice, lots of miscellaneous stage details, the music is to die for... yeah, I can see someone reasonably liking it.
Because Roxes 1-62 died from failure to absorb the correct levels of sarcasm and weirdness.

Don't ask about Rox63. Just don't.

The controls were pretty much the only turn-off for me. I enjoyed the track designs, the music of course, and characters to race with. I remember having it on the Sonic Gems Collection disk and pretty much playing it until I had unlocked everything. Wasn't too sure why the game received as much hate as it did.

it is real neat, but it's held down by the shoddy controls and lack of content. if they made a sequel i'd definitely be interested, but considering the fact that sega/sonic team has already made three other sonic racing franchises with varying results (and the developer, tt games, only recently coming back to the sonic series for lego dimensions), i'm assuming that it's not going to happen.

still like the game though. who doesn't want to run a marathon as the fastest thing alive?

i don't think sonic r is a great game (only 5 stages, mediocre controls, extremely short campaign) but that's never stopped me from enjoying it. i like playing as amy on hard mode and trying to beat everyone. the aesthetics are a cute S3K esque early transition to 3D which i love, the stage design is cool and i love the hidden shortcuts, i think the weather system is cool and i love the cheesy music. though not the best sonic game it fills me with nostalgic joy whenever i play and i get a lot of fun out of it

It might be an unpopular opinion, but... I like Sonic R quite a bit, actually. The only real beefs that I have with it - even more so than the janky controls - are A) how short the game is and B) the above-mentioned lack of balance between the characters. Besides unlocking the bonus racers and collecting all of the Chaos Emeralds, there isn't much to do with only five race courses on the table. But it was one of my favorite games to kill some time with on quiet days, and still maintains a special place in my heart among the games featured in Sonic Gems Collection.

Unpopular opinion: I love Sonic R and would put it over most other Sonic racing games and racing games in general.

Even more Unpopular opinion: Tails Doll is the best character.
