So, apparently some person got into the US with Ebola after visiting Nigeria.
We should be safe.

We're all gonna die.
Halloween will be real interesting this year. If any of us are alive at the time.

Well, the US does have more resources to deal with ebola, its just a matter of keeping this one man from infecting someone else

*Consults Wikipedia* In the roughly 4 decades since Ebola was first identified, its averaged less than 100 confirmed deaths annually and is not known to be transmitted through the air. Considering that most, if not all known outbreaks took place in Africa, a continent that by and large is roughly stone-aged in regards to medical technology, either it is vastly underdiagnosed, or presents low risk for widescale infection with proper containment measures.
While it's a rather nasty virus, I suspect that the fear this news generates will do more damage to Americans than the virus itself.

Honestly, I think we're all much more knowledgeable about the virus, enough to be able to keep safe even if we're in the same city as the outbreak. However, viruses reproduce quickly and at times can change from reproducing in humans and certain animals to just, let's say, chimpanzees. Then after mutating quickly, the virus would return to infecting humans and other animals, but much stronger. Equally, this virus can become airborne should it spread widely enough. Also, Ebola zaire is one of the four Ebola sisters (Marburg, Sudan, Zaire and Preston), and is the most dangerous of the sisters. Thus it is important to be able to distinguish between the four as Marburg has symptoms like radiation sickness until the end, whereas Sudan is airborne, Zaire is the most dangerous, and Preston can only infect other primates.
This is what I've found in the Hot Zone, which details the origins of the Ebola virus in 1976.

Ebola can (so far) only be spread through bodily fluids like blood and whatnot. You aren't in any danger whatsoever so long as you don't trade those fluids with everyone.
America as a whole is very safe actually. We have such a strong health infrastructure that it's very easy for us to contain and cure these diseases. We aren't safe though is Africa continues this Ebola spreading. If they continue to spread, it gives the virus more chance to mutate and become an airborne disease that would put us in danger. That's why it's so critical we help Africa right now, to ensure this doesn't spread and endanger not only Americans, but the world.

Someone from another country where Ebola was wasn't allowed to go to school to people being worried about them getting Ebola from him. The Ebola outbreak in some countries is starting to make people go silly...
I know it is good they are aware of it, though.
I'm honestly also a little scared, since of knowing what happened to things like the Black Death when it had no cure, and that was so long ago, hopefully an outbreak of another disease that is very bad just doesn't happen.

I thought people wanted the USA to stop trying to involve itself in world politics. I guess the world police hat comes off hard.Fox Boy wrote:Ebola can (so far) only be spread through bodily fluids like blood and whatnot. This involves us just as much as anyone. I mean, if we're not careful and exterminate Ebola before it spreads, we could have a huge crisis on our hands. The lack of medical infrastructure in the rest of the world lets the virus spread and could really become a threat if we leave ourselves out of it.

True enough, it's not like other countries are really stepping forward to combat much. Besides, we got a vaccine already.

Helping the destitute masses in less developed parts of the world by working to improve the quality of health care there sounds like a far better use of Taxpayer money than meddling in foreign politics, stirring up animosity, or trying to secure resources that only benefit large corporations. That said, I don't think the Federal Government can afford such foreign humanitarian aid when we have destitute masses living on the lower rungs of domestic society. As it relates to this issue in particular, I think the US Federal Government should prioritize minimizing further import of infected individuals and contaminated artifacts, minimizing spread within its borders, and ensuring that the masses are well-informed enough to not over-react and fall into a panic. At this point, the US Federal Government should leave the bulk of the foreign aid to the private sector while they work to get their own house in order.

I also think it worth noting that Measles killed more in 2011 than Ebola has since it's identification by a factor of about 40. In fact, according to this Wikipedia Article, Ebola isn't even in the top ten for death by infectious disease.
To my knowledge, the only cure for Ebola is to survive long enough for your immune system to fight off the infection, and given how nasty some of the symptoms can be, I doubt many could survive long enough for that to happen without treatment to mitigate the damage.

Its quite unlikely that you've come into contact with someone with ebola, if you life that far away from a big city.
