I don't have to think when I can tell you outright - everything wrong with adult cartoons is because South Park and Family Guy got so popular.

South Park started the "raunchy gross gore and sexuality just for the sake of gore and sexuality" trend, as well as the more recent "have to talk about something people care about like politics or a certain aspect of life, while making fun of it" trend. Family Guy started the "lazy stiff animation that boils down to people talking but it's drawn instead of acted out" fad. These together are killing adult animation.

I'm more sympathetic in south parks case because I feel they're still doing a good job.

Are other people trying to copy and follow suit? Yes, I feel that trend setters can be forgiven for the copycats they produce. Oh that reminds me. Can anyone help me find the Big Mouth article where the creator said "if i made this live action it would have constituted as child pornagraphy."

It still technically constitutes as child pornography which is why it's so ******. Not legally, but looking at it at all definitely gives off a creepy vibe.

These ugly-ass "14 year olds" that all look like they're 7 years old talking about orgasms and masturbating sure makes for some great TV!

Okay, I can't comment on the visual aspects, and I wasn't able to find any working YouTube videos of full episodes, but listening to the two Big Mouth teasers I found on YouTube was fairly disturbing. Easily the worst takes on masturbation guilt and teenage rebellion I've ever heard.

As for the sorry quality of most adult-oriented western animation, I think it an extension of the "cartoons are for kids" and "kids are stupid" mentalities that lead to a lack of quality in western animation in general. I.e. the logic goes something like, since cartoons are for kids, adults who watch cartoons must be childish, and since kids are stupid, these childish cartoon watching adults must be stupid. Hence why most adult cartoons are just as juvenile and lacking in substance as the typical family friendly cartoon with the biggest difference being that the adult-oriented shows can get away with using actual profanity and explicitly talking about sex while the kids' shows have to stick to Gosh Darn it to heck and euphemisms the target audience won't understand.

Granted, there are some shows that manage to use extremely juvenile humor while also being fairly witty, such as the aforementioned South Park, but they are pretty rare, tend to be either short-lived or ultimately devolve into being as bad as the garbage that was never good, and the truly serious animated show is even rarer.

Every adult cartoon that isn't King of the Hill is hot garbage and even King of the Hill is only okay at best, with the one and only exception to this rule being The Venture Bros.

The main reason this is true is because everyone in the animation field with any talent was inspired by children's shows when they were kids and naturally follow in the footsteps of that inspiration. Adult cartoons are inspired by cookycutter sitcom trash.

Why is Japanese anime objectively better than Western animation? Anime has been recreating manga serials page by painstaking page for decades. Manga is influenced by completely different factors compared to television; anime is influenced by manga and by other anime influenced by manga. Our cartoons are almost exclusively influenced by television, and there's nothing on television except children's shows and bad sitcoms. It's a vicious cycle.

What are some instantly recognizable, long beloved cartoons universally acknowledged for their quality and cultural significance? The Peanuts. Batman the Animated Series. Mickey and Donald. TMNT. Popeye the Sailorman. Fleischer Superman. Comic book characters (well, the relationship between the Disney comics and the animation is more complicated, but many of the things we associate with those characters are details that originate in the newspaper strips). Those are also all considered children's shows; they are not, however, actually based on children's comics (open any Mirage TMNT comic and tell me what audience you think that was intended for). They are essentially -unfaithful- adaptations. The source material was good, and the adaptation was good, but stuff was lost to fit the new demographic. Other cartoons draw inspiration from shows like that- and more stuff is lost.

How many adult cartoons are inspired by comics? There's no end of adult comics to choose from. Don't tell me Superman's a kid's comic while he's trying to juggle raising his son Jon and saving the world from a nuclear war while dealing with the political ramifications of his decisions to interfere in international affairs. What do adult cartoons take inspiration from instead? MTV, sitcoms, stand up comedy, maybe they through out a reference to Star Trek every year so.

It's horse****. Because the people who make adult animation are hacks borrowing from other hacks. The creators are talentless consumers of garbage and so is their target demographic.

wait some of you people actually believe "adult" animation can possibly be made and not subsist on horribly maintained usage of their so-called adult privileges?

please tell me how they used their freedom and how this was something they couldn't have pulled off originally with a few cuts

Because I haven't watched it yet, and most likely won't soon since I'm currently too jaded from the current state of TV to actually watch cartoons other than Steven Universe and occasionally Sonic Boom,
regardless of quality, and probably will be for a while.

eboy the problem here is if you can count the amount of adult animation that doesnt rely on immature grossout humor on your hands it probably means adult animation in the USA is crap.

Also chaoadventures, I tried being fair but the newest steven bomb was stupid. Star VS is turning out to be a lot better in all respects as time continues with these two shows.

As far as japan vs usa in animation, Japan at it's worst is still a 7 or an 8 compared to what we get in the USA.

Huh. I thought Steven was still in the middle of a completely silent hiatus. Just imagine that I said that all in relation to the first 4 seasons.

it's still crap, they left many questions unanswered and on top of that we got enforced filler in the form of towny episodes

steven universe is edging in animation form

It's been a long time since I rewatched Samurai Jack since its tendency towards long stretches without dialogue or narration make it unsuitable for a blind audience, and I haven't given season 5 a listen, but from what I remember, the original seasons were easily some of the bloodiest, most violent material to ever air on Cartoon Network outside of Adult-Swim or Classic Toonami: The Midnight Run, and only got away with half of what it did because anything that bled didn't bleed red.

Personally, I'd add The Boondocks to the list of decently written adult cartoons, though given that it's based on a comic strip, it seems to be more evidence for Ivo's conclusion that America needs more cartoons based off comics.

As for gross out humor, isn't this a problem even with cartoons targetted at a younger audience, just with less sex and innuendo and more farts and gosh darn it to heck? When was the last time you saw a TV-G comedy cartoon that relied on clean situational comedy or genuinely witty one-liners?

And yeah, even at its worse, Japan is still above the American average most of the time. Hell, as much as I hate filler and wish Japan would take a page out of America's playbook and cut back long runners to 26 or even 13 episodes per year, I'd rather sit through most filler arcs than a marathon of most of what was airing on Cartoon Network before I gave up on television.

Criticism of the state of the art aside, I recently finished the English dub of the original Speed Racer and listened to the first episode of the original Voltron. Haven't yet decided whether I'll focus my anime time on Voltron, starting Digimon Tamers, continueing my episode-by-episode comparison of Cardcaptor Sakura, or Start on Sword Art Online, though I want to finish those and Digimon Frontier before I try downloading any more full series.

I mean I liked them, but I feel like expecting the more town based episodes to not show up as much is kinda strange just based on the first few episodes.

i know the townie episodes are a part of the show, that's why it's such a slog

people wait half a year for new episodes and we get to see an episode that has nothing to do with the gem conflict. people waited half a year for star vs and we have an overarching plot over the course of each episode which builds into a large revelation.

Steven Universe was never good, it was always the same BS dragging things out, it's more pretentious than post-Simon Petrikov Adventure Time and only delivers half as much content.

SvsFoE at least doesn't waste the viewer's time.

First episode of Big Hero 6 was pretty okay.

Personally I wish the designs looked closer to the illustrations used at the credits in the movie (I think they're by Shiyoon Kim?), but at first glance at the credits for both it doesn't look there's a big art department overlap, sadly. Could be wrong though.

Like I said, pretty okay. No real complaints. You guys?

I watched it. I like it.

If I have a complaint, it's that the movie was too short and ended too quickly.

Now Craig needs to make The Patakis.

I didn't watch it but talking pikachu gives me shivers and sounded nothing like what I originally imagined ash's pikachu as sounding like

Movie's probably pretty alright regardless, and I'll probably watch it someday, but that's what I say about all of the Pokemon movies I haven't watched yet so...

I haven't seen "I Choose You!" yet, but I DVR'ed it so I will soon.
I didn't miss The Jungle Movie, though (because I am way too obsessed with Hey Arnold!), and it was freaking EPIC! I was very satisfied, and I would love to see a season 6, but I'm cool with this being the ending.

Is I Choose You the Ho-oh movie or am I even more out of the loop on Pokemon movies than I thought? Also, am I correct in thinking Otani didn't provide Pikachu's English speaking voice?

Also, I knew there was a Hey Arnold movie in production, but I had no idea it was actually out. That's another in a long line of older shows I need to marathon at some point.
