Cartoon Discussion: OK KO! Let's Be Heroes (Lakewood Plaza Turbo)

Post by Rajikaru »

So, I haven't seen any of us discussing this show yet. It recently premiered on Cartoon Network and has aired about 10 episodes.

The original Pilot was posted on CN's youtube page a year and a half ago, premiering on the channel itself in 2013, and was an instant hit. Throughout the the next year, multiple shorts were released of the series, now titled "OK K.O.!" with different artstyles by different animation companies, showing off various characters as well as the focus of the show, the aforementioned Lakewood Plaza. Two weeks ago the series officially launched, and, to put it simply, it's perfect.

For the past few years, CN has been floundering, Regular Show ended, Adventure Time has been pretty MIA and hit-or-miss, We Bare Bears is more of a niche show that never really saw the success of the other three, and Steven Universe is being beaten down by the Machine that is CN so bad that only hardcore fans still even have interest in the show. The channel has basically been lifelining Teen Titans Go! To the point that there are actual 3-day marathons of nothing on the show but TTG and OK KO premiere episodes. At any one point in time, turning to CN will more than likely show TTG on, if not an episode in the next hour.

But, while OK KO can't save a floundering channel, it certainly is one of the best tv shows they've put out in recent memory. Its artstyle is adorable, the animation is very fluid and exaggerated, the premise is a simple one that can be milked to death if necessary, and the humour is charming and well-done. I've been watching the show since it aired, it may honestly beat Steven Universe as my favorite US cartoon airing. It's perfect in almost every way. Its exaggerated animation, simplistic artstyle, and episodic nature remind me somewhat of Ed, Edd n' Eddy. It certainly has the variety of characters to match, as well, almost every character in the Plaza is important in at least one episode.

So, /discuss.

I haven't actually watched it but I've been planning on doing it once I'm not super busy and out of town. Real pumped to see it!

I watched two episodes in passing. It has a ton, and I mean a TON of potential.

But it has one big huge problem.

It's on CN.

Yeah it's a little hard to be excited for it when it might die pretty soon under all the teen titans go.

But I have been watching it, it's wholesome to see the hero not have the same kind of "idiot hero" faults minus how much he can get in over his head. But even then it's nice to cheer him on each and every time.

is this adventure time but also slightly more likeable and tolerable

and let me tell you I didn't either like or tolerate adventure time in the slightest

As in, this is quality enough for me to want it to be a show that airs on TV to fill extra slots on CN just like it already is, but I wouldn't spend genuine time watching it.

In other news, this show is the only thing the Cartoon Network app has ever advertised to me when I've used it.
