OLD POST:
Spoiler:
So, cosmetic modding. I've recently been really into customizing Gamecube controllers & was considering picking up a few Cubes to experiment with. I'm not planning on touching any fancy LEDs or anything because I'd botch the operation instantly, but I take them apart, prime them, spraypaint both halves of the body, the buttons, etc., and finish with a clear coat for protection. This is how mine turned out:
Image

Her name is Black-Eyed Susan. Ain't she a doll? Gold body, black A, B, X, Y, Z, and start. I'm super happy with the outcome, and it feels pretty legit. I did one for my friend, too. It looks pretty similar, except only his A and Z buttons are black. I'm gonna try to do something similar with a PS2 controller this weekend.

So yeah, discuss cosmetic mods. You dig them? You hate 'em? Maybe you only like the ones with the pretty LEDs?

^Oh she's pretty alright. Well done on that one.

I think it's pretty cool, but I wouldn't do that to my own controller for fear of messing it up.

Nice. I've thought about spray painting my gamecube controllers before, as it doesn't seem too difficult as long as you can follow instructions. Never had though because I have terrible luck with them messing up over the years, and don't want to spend time and effort if it can't be well used. So, I just stay with slapping stickers on things and calling it one of a kind. XD

But I like the choice of color for that gamecube controller. Can't go wrong with spiffy gold. The black buttons are a nice touch too. It looks ready to take on some serious gaming.

If you know what you're doing, what you can come up with is really awesome!

Actually, when I went to a gaming/anime event a few months back, I saw a guy with a modded N64 controller playing Brawl. It was freaking crazy, the control stick was different- sorta looked like a GameCube stick except black. Makes me wonder how the heck these people can do this stuff o.O

:3 Ohh very nice!

I painted the faceplate of my Xbox 360 white with green polka dots and my friend painted hers checkered.
D: Mine red-ringed so now we have a black one and since I share it with my mother she won't let me paint it.
But I do highly support cosmetic mods, they can look so pretty!

Also, if you really want to get into it, www.dealextreme.com has great deals on all parts and plates and extra anything you'd need for stuff like this. :3

I would spray paint controllers, but I don't for 2 reasons.

One, i don't want to get the buttons messy if I mess up.

Two, the controller could feel god damn awful if the paint doesn't feel right.

^ 1) that's why you take it apart! the buttons won't be touched unless you paint them.

2) with two even coats of primer, at least two even coats of paint, and one (with careful touch-ups as needed) layer of clear coat, it'll feel pretty natural. of course, if you spray too close or too heavily, you'll get runs and sags, which won't feel the greatest.

@Kausa: Oooo, I'd like to see your 360! Did you take it apart, or did you tape areas off? Also, thanks for that link. I'll fo sho check it out.

I've cosmetically modified an N64 controller about 2 years ago.

It's not that great though:

i was thinking of getting some faceplates to fix up my Xbox controller, but I ultimately decided against it as I have no experience in such things and ****'s expensive.

and i'm not artistic enough to make one myself.

there are these bullet buttons, though, which are SUPER cool.

@Poseidon:
I just took off the faceplate and taped off the dots.
I'll see if I can dig it up, not sure where it went XD

BOMP.

I did an SNES controller just for fun. I don't think I even have a working SNES right now.
This picture is not the best. There are some specks on the controller that don't look too rad, but I'll try to snap some better ones after the paint is cured tomorrow. The image doesn't do the buttons justice. The red is a transparent metallic paint that I sprayed over a layer of gold, and the gold itself on the other buttons is actually really shiny. the L & R buttons are also gold. All in all, I'm pretty happy with it.

DBL POST.

So i'm stupid and i painted my gameboy today. there's a huge sag in the paint on one of the sides, so I'll have to sand it down and fix it after it's totally dry tomorrow. I think it looks pretty king from the front, though! I didn't clear coat it because I didn't know how it'd react with the red. Maybe I'll clear coat after I fix stuff.
Image

PROCESS: 1. Initial wipedown & removal of all the screws from the back & the inside.
2. Secondary cleaning & organization of the parts.
3. 2 coats of gray primer to both halves of the body & the D-pad + A and B + the on/off switch.
4. 2 coats of gold to the body & A and B.
5. 2 - 3 coats of transparent red to the body to create a metallic effect.
6. **** it up a few times, go back and fix it.
7. Be impatient and put it back together without adequate drying/curing time.
8. **** it up a few more times, go back and fix it.

aaaaand a group shot:

Triple post, hollaaaa.

I have two items to share today. My dad accidentally wrecked my Gameboy paint job, and I ended up having to re-do it. Coincidentally, it looks much better now. I ordered a yellow backlight kit from ASM Electronics, and I'm pretty excited for it to get here. I'll post pixxx when I get it installed.
Image

Secondly, I painted the inside of my transparent purple Gameboy Color.
Image
Secondary image + flash for a slightly better representation of the color.

I sort of wish that I would've used a different color for the buttons, but I think it looks alright. I went for the inside-out look, which I really dig. Problem is, there are a few flaws in the plastic that I wasn't aware of until after I took the tape off the front. I might end up re-painting the buttons red or sparkly purple. Not sure yet.

Up next on the agenda is an inside-out orange Gameboy for my friend, and an inside-out lime green Gameboy Pocket for myself. Both backlit, hopefully. The kit I purchased is actually quite convenient, as it's only one piece.

If anybody is interested, I need some $$$, and I'll be modding Gameboys to sell in the near future. More details later.

Considering how good you are at doing these, I think it'd be a good idea.

They're so pretty! And shiny too~!

o you guys is so nice~

wicca, i'd love to mod an xbox controller for you. i haven't done one of those yet.

Also, I did another thing today. I said the next one would be an inside-out gameboy pocket, but I ended up painting my silver one.
Image

xtreme happiness with the outcome of this one. I'm going to install a red backlight in this one sometime down the line. the color in that picture is kinda inaccurate. It's slightly more green in person. Very teal. i ALWAYS forget SOMETHING when i put these back together, and i thought i did such a good job on this one. i was like "batteries in, hell yeahhh," and then i realized i forgot to put the on switch back in.

...i had to go back in and fix it.

These look fantastic!

I would love to be able to do stuff like this, but alas, I have no knowledge of painting, nor do I have spray paint or the money for it!

I really like the colors of the Teal+Red Gameboy Pocket. :)

Poseidon those are amazing.

You should take one of those Batarang controllers and make it like Batman Beyond Batman style.
