WELL
I did something cool, but then i wrecked it right away.
I put a frontlight from a gameboy SP into this here gameboy color, but there was something weird about it. It would play most of my pokemon carts just fine, but a lot of my other games wouldn't run. So, seeing how I also needed to move one of the wires out of the way of the right d-pad contact, I decided to open it up and have a look.
I couldn't determine for sure what the problem was immediately, but i took a chance and decided that it was probably the resistor I soldered in. I had to kind of crush it down in order for everything to fit in the case, and it had a huge kink in it, so I removed that resistor and soldered in a new one. It would play all my games! That's cool! But there was a weird color issue. It'd quickly flicker from the normal color layout to a warmer one. It didn't render any game unplayable, I just wanted to fix it.
I went in to try to re-position the ground wire, because i was almost certain that was the problem. It was getting pinched in the side of the case. I disconnected it and had a hell of a time getting it back on. I think, while struggling with my soldering iron, I must have touched something I shouldn't have, shorting something out. I had an extra gameboy color mobo in my drawer, so i switched it out, expecting it to be fixed. It wasn't. I'm gonna keep working at it, but until then, I have the memory of what was. </3

Oh wow, that's amazing. I'd love to have one of those :3
Re: Poseidon's Gameboy Factory. Image-heavy.
thanks, yo. I FIXED IT.
my friend kindly donated his green gameboy color to me, and i was able to use the mobo from it. HOLLA.
and as a tribute to his green gameboy, i swapped the back plates.
also i bought a really horrible soldering iron from radio shack. the guy talked me into buying a radio shack brand soldering iron, and i was like "um ok" because he seemed pretty confident that it was rad or something. it only heats up when it wants to, which is a pretty lame trait for one of these to have.
but it sucks so i'm kind of thinking that they get rewards points for selling radio shack brand ****. oh well, i guess it got me through this one. (barely) i think i'll switch back to my trusty hakko.

Gorgeous!
Yeah, after trying to sell yearbook ads to Radio Shack I'm convinced the people that work at those stores are evil. Good to know you have a reliable brand to use instead.

Damn, Poseidon, I should send you my Phat Gameboy to mod.
Re: Poseidon's Gameboy Factory. Image-heavy.
^Yes you should!
I haven't found any new gameboys lately.
it seems like everyone who has one is suddenly interested in selling it, but also at the same time, completely uninterested in knowing what they're actually worth. so then, you get all these local clowns on craigslist trying to sell a gameboy sp "bundle" with ~15 horrible games for $175 LOL THAT'S MORE THAN YOU'D ACTUALLY BE ABLE TO SELL A USED 3DS FOR.
Or perhaps a gray original gameboy for $40
like what
but anyway, i did score a wavebird controller sans receiver at savers for $7, and it took me a really long time to paint it, mostly because while my paint booth is indoors, it's also in my basement. and when it's cold outside, my basement is also cold. you don't want to spraypaint anything when it's below 50 degrees F because the paint doesn't distribute like it should, but I actually did paint it when it was probably around 30 degrees F, and it turned out pretty well!
Teal controller body + purple A button + Shimmery black B Y X buttons with a layer of glitter and clear coat.

Poseidon, I'd really love to see what you'd do to a Dreamcast.
I've seen cool mods and such, but it'd be really cool to see your take.
You should buy one.

Re: Poseidon's Gameboy Factory. Image-heavy.
^you know, I think I will!
A good friend of mine has an extra one. I'll see if I can snag it at a decent price. I want to get more into painting entire consoles. I'm going to come up with a design for my Gamecube and a snes that I have laying around.
Boring picture-less upd8z: the same good friend mentioned above does lots of work for a super cool nonprofit that creates a lot of awareness for areas that have human trafficking problems. They go on trips and help out a bunch and everything. Anyway, we're gonna collab on a custom snes console (for the nonprofit office) when the weather is nicer. On that same token, I am soon to acquire an ~AIR BRUSH SYSTEM~ so I will be using fancy, heavy duty automotive paint for my m0d$, the first likely being the nonprofit snes. Super excited. That means stronger clear-coats for increased shine and durability!
Thanks for the nice words, everyone! It's really awesome to see that people are still interested in seeing this ****. <3

Good, I look forward to it.
You should try for a Sega Blue or something, make the console look as good as it is.

I think a PS1 is the console to paint. A pretty basic shape, and I've seen some really neat stuff done to them in the past.
Something to consider at some point possibly ;)

Re: Poseidon's Gameboy Factory. Image-heavy.
I always thought a Gamecube would look really nice if it was painted with some cool decals. Also I have a spare Gamecube if you want me to ship it to you. (It's pretty scratched up)
it was nice to find my own little place on the internet
Re: Poseidon's Gameboy Factory. Image-heavy.
^Yo, that would be super cool!
My tax return is coming in soon, and as much as i hate thinking about spending $300 on airbrush stuff, i'm probably not gonna have that kind of disposable income again anytime soon. it might happen pretty soon, in which case, i'm going to start doing full consoles.
in the mean time, here's a new guy. black/pink/purple. yum.
maybe i'll take better pictures sometime soon. the screen cover is my favorite part. it's actually an aftermarket screen protector from the '90s that's pretty rare these days! that said, I'm not sure i'm completely happy with the backlight type this time. i tried a different kind with a detached polarized film. basically what that means is that rather than having separate backlight panels for inverted or normal display, you can make the display inverted or normal yourself just by rotating the film 90 degrees. (inverted display means that you see all pixels that would normally be shaded as blank, and vice versa. essentially, it's like reversing the way you'd normally see shaded/blank pixels.) i chose to invert my display this time, and it's cool, but it doesn't look quite the same as the other backlight type.
EDIT: i forgot to mention that i just sold one of my gameboys on ebay for the first time. it was the green/purple one. I only got $43 for it, but there's some case damage from the previous owner, so i can't really complain!

Re: Poseidon's Gameboy Factory. Image-heavy.
i am SO EXCITED ABOUT THIS YOU GUYS
really this is cool
my boss said i could take home an empty opi nail polish display because it was just going to get thrown away anyway.
i intended to actually use it for nail polish, BUT then i had a thought.
this is the most perfect thing!
for the sake of having something new to share with y'all, i may soon be acquiring a NES console for free from one of my mom's work friends.
that would be great, because literally everyone who is selling one on craigslist has no idea what it's actually worth.
console, controller, and 15 mario/duck hunt carts for $175. DEAL.
not literally, but i wouldn't be surprised.
i'm also hoping that i'll find one on the curb for clean-up week.
