On the subject of game reviews.

Post by Triert »

Have you ever felt like a game got a score it didn't deserve in any way?

Case in point, Pokemon Black and White which got a 7.5 from Gamespot.

Whereas Black 2 and White 2 got a....SIX POINT FIVE?????

Not particularly. Because out of a handful of sources that give one score you could probably find at least one that says exactly what you want to hear. I make my own evaluations based on watching people play through games and reading a variety about game elements and reviews of differing opinions, anyway.

It's never something that bothered me.

It bothers me for the fact that when people see these low review's they won't want to buy the games. Which leads to them losing money, and then no more games.

Of course, this is only on game's I like and other's who share common interest with me. So yeah, opinions opinions and onions.

Gotta agree with AtomicBat. I don't really give a hang about how a game scores according to other people. They're not me so they're not going to always think a game I like is good, or a game I hate is bad. I have never bought a game because someone gave it a 9.5 in a review. I've never ignored a game because someone gave it a 2.5.

>Taking reviews from places like Gamespot, Ign, Kotaku, G4 etc seriously

Metacritic is usually the one you should use, albeit the retards who spam 0/10 and the viral markets who spam 10/10, but usually you get a decent score.

Frankly, I don't take reviewers seriously because of a tvtrope coined term, the four point scale.

Now, how can you take that website seriously if it has things like that?

That's not the site's fault, its the reviewers themselves as well as the people who read it like that.

I consider 5/10 still a good rating. That's just the halfway mark. 1 or 2/10 is where I think a game's bad. But I don't know many games that would deserve something that low unless they're literally broken or Superman64.

Numeric "scoring" systems in reviews are a poor substitute for a careful analysis of the game that could tell the reader what its strong points are and what items in particular should give reason to dissuade them from purchasing it.

Yeah, for the most part reviews are pretty much useless to a person unless they wrote the review themselves. Otherwise parts of the game like story and characters are not going to be considered in the same way.

I love games with cute character designs. Reading a review where someone says "the characters look kiddy and girly" is not going to make me want to buy the game any less.

Only time I would ever consider not buying a game based on a review would be if every review I had ever seen mentioned a game breaking glitch that's really easy to activate and there's no easy way to avoid it. Though I don't think I've ever personally seen such a thing...

People get reviews all wrong. A review is an opinion. Beyond that, reviews are, contrary to popular belief, intended to spark debate among those who have actually played the game, not for you to base every single one of your gaming purchases around. I am a video game journalist (amateur that is) and I don't even use scores in my reviews. What does 7/10 tell you? Nothing, that's what. If you can't tell what I think of a game by my words, then I am a crap reviewer.
No, you're clearly wrong. A game's success is determined by the score. Opinions are facts now, and if this game gets too many negative facts then this game clearly sucks so we should all just leave and play Kingdom Hearts and Call of Duty.(that hurt to type)" - Sabeta_Sama of GFAQs

I personally think that if you're going to judge a game from it's ranking then you should check from numerous different sites. Like everyone has said, a review is an opinion, it'll probably be biased in someway. If you get a lot of different views that are all giving a game around 9/10, then that game is probably a good game. On the other hand, if many reviewers are giving a game 2/10, then the chances are it probably sucks.
PM me if you have any piece of writing that you want reviewed, I'll do my best to help you out!

Really, if it isn't an FPS, or 2deep4u, it's going to get a low score.

I don't read reviews, I judge games based on my own experience.

Not one for judging a game based on others' opinions.

Dumbass. Everyone knows the professional reviews are based on how much the professional critics are paid to review it.

I like to watch reviews so I get a good sum of gameplay to know what the game's like. I don't care about scores that other people give.

Your OOT review...
Graphics:5.0 You play a N64 game you get low res polygons
Sound: 9.8 Brilliant music but some felt like they needed more and the battle music gets repetitive
Game play/story: 0 It’s the same old damsel in distress but everyone is a weirder version of Spock
Lasting appeal: 4.9 you can get Master quest but none of that otherwise
Overall: 3 yes its a brilliant RPG but it seams Nintendo used a hypno ray since the beginning, i would rather play Space Invaders, now THAT was a good game
