The rings are clearly metaphors for the misfits of society, unable to "fit in." They are drawn to the electromagnetic and impressive ring in the back, but keep their distance for fear of rejection. The sky breaking apart symbolizes poked holes in the lid of a fastfood cup, which itself symbolizes holes in general, which in turn symbolizes past wounds left when the misfits strayed too close to the greater gear.
