I would like a lot of different game titles in the Sonic Universe but I'm going to say,Sonic Adventure 3,and An SA wouldn't be an SA without a Chao Raising system. :D

ANOTHER SONIC GAME WITH CHAO IN IT!!! *shotdead*

It'd be SA3, and it would take the best bits from SA1 and SA2. The different characters would all have different types of levels and gameplay, but there wouldn't be a hub world (as much as I liked it, it broke the flow of gameplay and I didn't like how certain areas were blocked for certain characters).

Sonic levels would be the "gotta-go-fast" type deal we all know and love. Nothing slow and clunky like Pyramid cave; the closest thing would be a level like Casinopolis.

Tails levels would be flight-oriented, with a ton of different ways to go through each level. He'd also have different gadgets, and be able to turn some of those random objects lying around into weapons. No racing levels unless they're optional or just a one-time thing, though, though.

Knuckles levels would be similar to SA2, but with the SA1 tracking system. Any big levels would have an easy way to go back to the starting point, and there would be no Death Chamber shenanigans (AND NO KING BOO BOSS BATTLE OR ANYTHING LIKE IT). One boss battle would involve those two Mecha Knuckleses from Sonic Advance).

No Shadow because he's dead.

Amy levels would be fast like Sonic levels, but with a lot more wrecking stuff. Her missions would be chase missions (with her doing the chasing instead of the other way around). If there's a hero/dark dichotomy like in SA2, she'd wind up being dark because of her types of missions (and because there needs to be an even ratio, haha).

Rouge levels would be more puzzle-oriented, though still with the goal of getting something at the end (like keys or shards or seekrit information).

Eggman levels would just be improved versions of what he had in SA2.

Big, Tikal, Chaos, and Metal Sonic would have their own stories that could be unlocked after beating the stories above.

And you could take those objects in SA2 that you could pick up and throw at enemies with you into the chao gardens.

Also, NO TIME LIMITS LIKE IN SECURITY HALL EVER.

Minimal sotry beyond "Eggman's up to no good again and Sonic and Company have to stop him" unless we can find a script writer as good as what we got from Sonic Battle.

Sonic would play like a high-speed freerunner with some acrobatic abilities thrown in.
Tails would handle like a slightly slow Sonic with fewer acrobatics but gaining the ability to fly and utilize various gadgets. Can also pilot the Cyclone and Tornado as needed.
Knuckles would have a more combat-oriented playstyle while still being fairly quick and maintaining his climbing, digging, and gliding abilities.
Amy is also combat oriented, but uses various blunt-force melee weapons instead of her fists. Her default hammer gives her a balance between speed and power, but she can swithc it out for other weapons such as a mace that deals heavy damage while sacrificing speed or a staff that sacrifices raw power for lightning fast strikes. Perhaps Tails builds some high-tech weapons that give her attacks special affects if she has the proper fuel to power it(Fire, Ice, and Lightning come to mind).
Cream is the slowest character and can't fly as far as Tails, but her small size allows her to infiltrate areas others can fit, and she can rain Chao death down upon her enemies.
Shadow plays much like Sonic, but with Chaos powers instead of acrobatics.
Rogue plays like a Hybrid of Tails and KNuckles(gadgetry, gliding and climbing)

The game has an expansive, open world environment and instead of distinct levels, you just have areas of the game world that are somewhat separated from the rest(think of how everything was connected in the original Jak and Daxter) with area having several challenges to complete. Progression though the game would be non-Linear with the only real barriars being between the "easy" areas, "medium" areas and "Hard" areas with the boundaries requiring that you collect enough of particular resources for Tails to build whatever is needed to pass the obstacle that divides the overworld.

Some characters will be better suited to completing some challenges, and some will be borderline impossible with only a single character, but you can control upto three characters in Tandum with different team techniques unlocked depending on which characters you chose(for example, Sonic and Shadow can use slipstreams to boost each other to insane speeds and achieve momentum sufficient for otherwise impossible stunts, flyers can help non flyers reach places they normally couldn't, and some gadgets require both Tails and Rogue to properly operate.

A game where you can control three characters as a team like in Sonic Heroes, but can switch characters around to form completely new teams like in Sonic Advance 3 would be pretty cool. If SEGA ever does make a game that returns to Heroes-style gameplay, having the option to change team mates instead being restricted to the same four groups of three could make for a refreshing experience for anyone who disliked the original game. Imagine plowing through stages with a team of all Power characters, or achieving extended flight time by rotating between three Fly characters. Of course, hopefully such a game would have sufficient diversity between each individual character that such a mechanic would be appealing the first place- one of the biggest criticisms of Sonic Heroes was that all the teams played about the same.
