So apparently, The SOS team got a Guinness World Record for first official fan convention for a video game character...

Neato. If I remember correctly, in the UK at a big convention, Sonic was nominated as most iconic video game character in that region. Don't quote me on that though.

I'd believe it- Sonic's arguably a bigger video game icon in that part of the world than in either Japan or the United States.
