SA2B disc error

I was playing my SA2B game the other day, when suddenly it gave me an error. It was a used copy so I'm assuming it's because its scratched up. I'm scared to try to clean it for fear of messing it up anymore. So here's my question.

Should I keep playing the game until I get another error message, or should I just cut my losses and transfer the three Chao I have on it over to my SADX game?

games sometimes error without scratches. but turn it over and look. how many scratches does it have?

It's pretty scratched up. It doesn't look like it has any really deep scratches, but there are a good many shallow scratches.

I heard that theres a good way to fix scratches with toothpaste. lots of the users in the chatbox knows this way. I don't though.

I've read that as well but none of them say what kind I should use.
